Peter Hancocks
24th September 1934 – 12th May 2006
Peter Hancock’s, former Show Manager of The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club, funeral took place on 25th May 2006 at the South Chapel, Oakley Wood Crematorium.
As I drove up to the crematorium Chapel, through some beautiful woods, I thought what a lovely peaceful place this was for the final farewell to our former Show Manager Peter Hancocks. With a packed congregation of his close knit family, friends, associates and motorbike enthusiasts as well friends from the Papillon world, we walked into the large Chapel to the sounds of Glenn Miller playing ‘In the Mood’. Everyone present felt Carina's great loss and our sympathy at this sad time went to her.
Captain Steven Thomas of The Salvation Army led a moving celebration of the life of Peter, stressing that in spite of his long term health problems including being one of the first heart bypass patients in his twenties he had overcome all these obstacles with vigour and determination. He was a man of principle and integrity. The Old Rugged Cross was sung, Psalm 23 was read and two tributes to Peter were given by his cousin and by a friend who introduced him to the world of papillons.
Peter led a very active life; he was of strong opinions and said what he believed. He under went some pioneering open heart surgery in 1958 where he was given a life expectancy of 25 years after the operation. He out did that figure and survive another 47 years. He deigned he was of poor health even up to the end. During his life he raced in Clubman’s Motor-cycle events at Mallory Park, Thruxton and Silverstone circuits and was an active member of the Antelope Motor Cycle Club, based in Coventry. Peter was an RAC/ACU Instructor for the Motor-cyclists Training Scheme. He joined the Special Constabulary at Nuneaton in 1965 retiring 28 years later in 1993. His leisure time was spent with his papillons and his wife Carina, showing and caravanning, travelling all over the Country with a special fondness for Scotland. He was Show Manager for the Club for two years giving up due to bad health just prior to him going into hospital where he passed away. He will be sadly missed by those that knew him. Our thoughts are now with Carina his wife and hope that she gains solace in her papillons and will be seen around the ring again.
The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club was represented by the President Mrs Wood-Davis and the Secretary with other members of the Committee giving their last respects. A donation from the Club was made in Peter’s memory to the British Heart Foundation.
