Breed Notes for May 2008

Reproduced with kind permission of Dog World & Our Dogs

02 May
Dog World There has been a change of Judge for Birmingham National. Unfortunately Betty Flavell has had to withdraw, apparently Betty had to have an operation on her knee in March and is still convalescing. We all wish her well soon. Papillons will now be judged by Liz Cartledge subject to KC approval.

Congratulations to Ann Stevenson's Papplewick Perfect Pitch on gaining his Junior Warrant, to go with his ShCM title. Perfect Pitch was bred by Jerry Munroe and Brendan Olding

At the Cork & District Canine Club in Papillons BOB & GSD went to Sean Carroll & James Newman's Denemore Icons Ruben and in Phalenes BOB & GSB went to Sue Morrell, Thespian Teague & Eilish Neally's Temelora Nichole, and GSD to Eileen Roberts & Caroline Smith's Serenglade Flagship By Rayol.

The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's web site has recently undergone some renovation and the new site is now up and running. Well worth a look, the web master Jill Terry has clearly been working very hard on it, it looks very attractive and is very easy to navigate. The address of course is http://www.papillonclub.co.uk

At the time of writing these notes the PCA Specialty is taking place in Maryland and thanks to the internet the results will be through very quickly. The Sweepstakes and Veteran Sweepstakes have taken place, the 'main' competition not due for a couple of days. It must be quite fascinating to spend an entire week, and it appears to be quite a hectic week as as well as the various competitions for the dogs (conformation, obedience, agility etc) there is a packed programme of other events -seminars, talks, health clinics, meetings of phalene fanciers, parades culminating in the Banquet at the end of the week. And of course the Club's AGM. Not only exhausting I should think but quite costly to attend. Of course the US is a far larger country and I suppose such events are the only was to get members from all over the country together, and I wonder whether such a programme would work here. Not many of us would be lucky enough to be able to get away for a week even if we could find someone to look after the dogs and other animals at home.

Well it is nice to be back although cant say the weather is very welcoming yet, I guess we have been spoilt with the lovely South African weather. I must start by thanking Anne Borg for writing the breed notes for me while I was away, I know it can be very time consuming and she did a grand job, I was especially pleased to recieve them from her by e-mail so I could keep in touch with the Papillon News.

While we were out in Cape Town unforunately both Rodney and Myself had a few medical problems and I would like thank all those that took the trouble to send get well wishes and cards and e-mails. I must say the treatment out there was supurb and thank goodness for travel insurance!. We managed to attend 3 or 4 dog shows in the Cape, the Toy crowd are very friendly and most welcoming, all the shows are outdoors and some days it was very hot althought the dogs seem to cope very well. We were invited to a Puppy party in a beautiful estate in the wine growing region and had a super afternoon tea party playing with various toy breed puppies. I have been invited to judge the Toy dog club show in the Cape next year so am looking forward to that.

I have managed to get some show news: Shirley Colyer sent the following: At the Norfolk & Norwich Canine Society Open show yesterday, Sunday 20th April 2008, Inixia Fortune Seeker for Shirando (Fred) achieved BOB and BP under judge Mr M R Goodwin (Lanola) and went on to gain Group 3 in the Group and Puppy Group 1 under Mr Lee Cox (Vanitonia). This follows on from his reported success at the Suffolk Kennel Association show recently. Congratulations Shirley, please remember everyone to send me all your news to the address below or of course feel free to phone.

I had the following from Jane Valentine, Show Secretary of Birmingham Dog Show Society: "Regrettably we have a change of judge for Papillons at the 2008 National Dog Show. Having had a knee operation at the end of March Mrs Betty Flavell is unable to fulfill the appointment. Her replacement, subject to KC approval, is Mrs Liz Cartledge."

The South of England Papillon Club will be holding their AGM, followed by the Charity Challenge Match at Chieveley on the 3rd of May , the AGM will take place at 11.00am there will be lunch on offer from 12.30pm and the Match will not start before 2pm, this is to be a friendly relaxed event and everyone is welcome to join in the Match, naturally only members may be present at the AGM. At the match we are hoping to raise some money for two dog related charities this year so please sponsor some of your friends dogs or contact myself if you would like to pledge some money, it goes withour saying how generous you have been in the past and the Club is very proud to have been able to donate )on your behalf) over £5000 to various charities since its formation. The Clubs Open show will alsobe at Chieveley on the 17th May and entries can be sent to show manager Keith Langdon, again this year there will be over £300 in prize money with £5 for every breed class winner, and big money for the best dog and best bitch also for the best puppies, and stakes class pizes too.If you need help with entries call Keith on 01452 770117.

At WELKS Dog CC and BOB went to Chie Ejima's Am Ch Queen Bless JP Special Legend, this being his second CC. Bitch CC was Sean Carroll and James Newman's Ir Ch Denemore Icons Butterfly, I believe her third thus giving her her title subject to KC confirmation. Reserves went to Ch Bodebi Rythm Is A Dancer, owned by John Turner and the late Gary Turner in dogs and in bitches to Irene and Glenn Robb's Gleniren Juniper Starmaker Sunshoo. BP was Anne MacGregor's Meerwings The Swallow Tale By Pyatshaw.

The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club held its AGM recently and the following Committee Members were elected Robert Beadle, Pauline Coughlin , Graham Fitch, Joe Magri, Christine May, Sue Morrell, Keith Rimmer and Pauline Wilson. The current Officers and Administrators were returned unopposed. The Judges elected for the 2010 Championship show were (subject to KC approval) Ted Whitehill (Dogs) and Karen Farrell (Bitches). The Rule 19 change, notified on the Agenda, was approved with a slight amendment to the wording. Rule 19 now reads: "All Challenge Cups and Trophies are to be held entirely at the winning member's risk and must be returned to the Cup Steward prior to, or at the applicable Show for which they are on offer, i.e. at the Club's Annual Championship Show and the Club's Open Shows. In the case of an Overseas Member winning any such trophy, a photographic representation will be offered as no trophies, for insurance purposes, may leave the UK as defined by H.M. Government. In the case of the Club becoming defunct, a General Meeting is to be called to appoint a Sub-Committee to realise and arrange for the disposal of cups, trophies and assets." The amendment to the existing rule is as shown in italics. A full report of the AGM will appear in the newsletter.

I understand the AGM went well and although over the years we have had one or two meetings which were perhaps a little more controversial than normal I don't believe we have ever had one that has caused as much consternation as the recent AGM of the PCA. And hopefully never will. It appears that when members attended that AGM they were met with a large security guard and a notice being displayed stating that anyone who got out of control would be removed bodily by the guard!! It seems all sorts of problems arose, the meeting being suddenly 'adjourned' and the Board with the exception of two members walking out. Sadly there have been ongoing issues in the PCA for a number of years and clearly a lot of acrimony. Whilst our own club has had its share of disagreements, some quite heated, we do not, thank goodness, see the same degree of unpleasantness and personal animosity that the PCA has witnessed. It seems that things are taken far more personally over the other side of the Atlantic.

The PCA Specialty however appears to have been a great success and history was made when for the first time ever BIS went to a Phalene, and a popular win it appears to have been as I am told it was greeted with much applause. The winning phalene was Am Can Ch Arkeno's Ears To You, owned by Salwa Alfadl, Kim A McKay,Murry J Berg & Mary Jo Loye and bred by Kim A McKay, Murray J Berg & James E Barnes. Cobb, as he is known, is a consistent winner in the US but this win was clearly extra special. Having seen a photo of him he is indeed a lovely looking specimen and shows how far the phalene exhibitors/breeders in the US have gone, especially as another Phalene, Am Ch. Siljans Secret Connection, another consistent winner, was also given an Award of Merit at the show. Interestingly Cobb's paternal grandsire is UK bred being Am Ch Lordsrake Top Notch bred her of course by the late Pauline Abbott and David. The only other UK connection I can see in the principal results are for another Award of Merit which went to Am Ch Queen Bless JP Principal Kid whose breeding I have previously given.

At W.E.L.K.S. Carol Hatch was judging the breed, she found her principle winners in DCC & BOB AM CH QUEEN BLESS JP SPECIAL LEGEND (MRS C EJIMA) RDCC CH BODEBI RHYTHM IS A DANCER (MR J W & THE LATE MR G TURNER) BCC IR CH DENEMORE ICONS BUTTERFLY (MESSRS S & J CARROLL & NEWMAN) RBCC GLENIREN JUNIPER STARMAKER SUNSHOO (MRS I & MR G ROBB) BP MEERWINGS THE SWALLOW TALE BY PYATSHAW (MRS A MACGREGOR) Congratulation to all the winners.

The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club held their AGM the following day and I had the following from the Secretary: " The Committee of The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club welcome three new committee members - Mr Bob Beadle, Mrs Pauline Coughlan and Mr Joe Magri. The Judges for the 2010 Championship show will be (subject to KC approval) Mr Ted Whitehill (Dogs) and Ms Karen Farrell (Bitches). The Rule 19 change, notified on the Agenda, was approved with a slight amendment to the wording. Rule 19 now reads: Rule 19. CUPS AND TROPHIES Reads: All Challenge Cups and Trophies are to be held entirely at the winning member's risk and must be returned to the Cup Steward prior to, or at the applicable Show for which they are on offer, i.e. at the Club's Annual Championship Show and the Club's Open Shows. In the case of the Club becoming defunct, a General Meeting is to be called to appoint a Sub-Committee to realise and arrange for the disposal of cups, trophies and assets" . "The sentence in italics has been added. A fuller report from the AGM will appear in the next edition of the Newsletter"

South Eastern Counties Toy Dog Society will hold thier Diamond Anniversary Open show on the 24th May at Woking, Papillons have six classes scheduled and will be judged by Eileen Roberts (Rayol) The South of England Papillon Club offer supported entry to this show and donate specials for BOB, BP and Best Veteran.

Writing Breed Notes is a little like waiting for a bus, nothing for ages then all of a sudden .... Firstly some good results for the breed to report. At the Seaham & District C S Open Show Miss J Clint's Dolcissimo Rocky took BP, BPIG and went on to take BPIS. BOB and G3 on the day went to Mandy and Dave Thornton's Shevid Uptown Girl. And at the Blackburn & District C A Show Miss S Lanson's Beausher Coquelicot Du Nord At Cantoverde took BOB, G1 and RBIS. Well done to all concerned..

The breed has two new ShCM, Jo Davidson Poston's home bred Spinillons Saffire JW has gained her title and I am given to understand is the youngest papillon so far to do so, and Ken Raper's Kazkell Clockwork Dream, bred by Karen and Steve Maskell, has gained his title. Congratulations to them both. Jo was particularly pleased with this as Saffire's grand sire, Ch. & Ir Ch. Ibstock Bright Spark For Spinillons ShCM, was the first papillon to gain this title and her sire, Powdermill Sweet Touch Spinillons, took another CC in Germany this weekend. He should have his title soon, I understand there is a time requirement between first and qualifying CC in Germany.

Preparing & presenting your showdog by Mr. Colm Hastings of Raggletaggle Showdogs, 5. Handling Your Dog to Success by Ms Eilish Neally, 6. IKC, FCI & European Winners Show 2009 by Mr. Michael McCarthy (Hon. Life Member of IKC). Certificates will be presented on the day. Whilst in Ireland on the mini circuit, at the Fermoy International Show BOB, GSB & CACIB went to Sean Carroll and James Newman's Ch. & Ir Ch Denemore Icons Butterfly, RGSB & Res. CACIB to Diane Mooney's Omaonaig Gossamer Wings, GSD & CACIB to Carol Lees Ch Bodebi Ray Of Success At Lafford and RGSD & Res. CACIB to Kilpatrick's Sonsirae Hi-Jinks. Aporia Chiassoso, GSD & CACIB to Marion Sloan's Neth., Lux., Bel., Ger., Fre. & Int. Ch. Austrene Academy Award (this gave him Irish Champion title) and RGSD to Eileen Robert's and Caroline Smith's Serenglade Flag Ship By Rayol.

Then to the South Tipperary show BOB & GSB & 3rd in the Group was Ch. & Ir Ch Denemore Icons Butterfly, RGSB went to Diane's Omaonaig Gossamer Wings, GSD went to Elish's Issoria Right Said Red at Carrigteen and RGSD went to Diane's Omaonaig Fire Bird. In Phalenes BOB & GSB went to Temelora Nichole, RGSB to Ch. Aporia Chiassoso and GSD to Serenglade Flag Ship By Rayol

I cannot remember Papillons making front page news in Dog World, what a pity that when they did it was such an unfortunate matter. Let's hope that this mater is sensibly sorted out without any further delay.

Our Dogs

Having just seen last weeks notes, I have to appolgise for the glitch in the text (wasnt my fault, Honest!) but I hope you got the general gist.

The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) club will hold their Open show on the 8th June 2008 at Ryton on Dunsmore both judges will be breed specialists: for the Breed classes it will be Mrs Sue Morrell and for the JHA/Benevolent classes, Mrs Pat Cox. Contact show secretary Mrs Jean Banfield for help with entries.

Great excitement for Mrs J Davidson-Poston, who is over the moon, her young bitch Spinillons Saffire JW won her Show Certificate of Merit at just 13 months old which I hear makes her the youngest Papillon ever to achieve this title, following on from her first CC earlier in the year at UK Toy, it looks like Saffire has a very promising future. Jo was equally delighted that the same weekend her Powdermill Sweet Touch Spinillons, won his 7th CC over in Germany. Many congratulations.

The South of England Papillon Club held their AGM at Chieveley last weekend, the meeting took place in the late morning followed by a lovely lunch created by the club's resident chefs: Ian and Janet Chandler, after lunch we held an informal match which took the form of a Charity Challenge between the South of England and the South Wales Papillon Clubs.Averil Cawthera-Purdy judged the match saying afterwards how much she enjoyed going over our delightful breed. The aim was to collect sponsorship for two dog charities this year (one English , one Welsh), we decided to make a break from "Papillons Walk for Charity" just to try something new also we usually collect for human charities so it was nice to collect for dogs this year: The two charities we chose were: The Cinnamon Trust and Pets-in-Need (Carmarthen) ,thanks to all those that contributed to the tune of £350 (at the time of writing) also the match entry money will be split between both club's welfare. Great fun and a little rivalry took place, South Wales winning both Best in Match and Reserve Best in Match with Best Puppy in Match going to the South of England Club.

I was delighted to recieve my copy of the Papillon Club 2008 handbook, full marks go to the editors for this publication, lots of imformative articles and super pictures of some lovely dogs. I must say, personally, I do prefer the pictures to be of the dogs rather than the owner (with he dog just squeezed in, in the corner), some of the close-up head studies and those of dogs in show pose are excellent. It really is a great reference book for those newcomers to the breed, novice judges, indeed anyone interested in the breed to be able to study the various types that are now present, where type varies it is interesting to try to compare various dogs to the breed standard, can what you really see be interpreted as a virtue? Im not suggesting anyone should try to judge from a picture but I do think some deeper understanding of the breed qualities and requirements can always be learned. A picture affords us the time to really study the obvious visual atributes, things like the eye size and more importantly the position of the eye in the skull, something that really effects the expression, also the blaze, the shape, size and the position where its narrowest point sits in the head, this too makes a considerable difference to the required soft expression. The overall proportions of the head are critical and again still pictures make it interesting to guage this very important aspect. Markings ofcourse can completely alter the overall picture and this is where it is esential that dogs are thoroughly examined on the judging table to determine the actual ratios. Again well done to Sue Morrell and the handbook crew, I expect it wont be long before plans for the next edition hit the drawing board.

A message from a friend in Italian Greyhounds tells me of the latest craze in "designer dogs" the "Papihound". As you might imagine, the cross is between Papillons and Italian Greyhounds. The resulting ‘breed’ is described as: "Very fancy. Fabulous with children, athletic & graceful. Great for agility and highly intelligent. Will weigh 6-8 lbs." someone saw a photograph of the puppies, and they looked exactly what they are, mongrels. One black and white and one red and white, vastly different in size, both looking vaguely like an IG but with domed apple heads. Will "designer pet" buyers ever realise they are paying a lot of money for what is actually a mongrel of very dubious breeding.

No more Open show news, are you all away on holiday? do remember to let me have your news.

Sue Stanbury, Chairman of the South Wales Papillon Club has asked me to advise all members of the Club that : "A notice of a Special General Meeting has been posted to all fully paid-up members" Anyone who has not received their notice , will you please contact Sue on 01392 369759.

At Birmingham National, Mrs E Cartledge was the replacement judge for Mrs B Flavell, who had to withdraw from the appointment with medical problems. Mrs Cartledge found her principle winners in: Dog CC & BOB, MAGRI Mr J, Frasermar Farenheit For Rozamie. Res Dog CC : TURNER, Mr & THE LATE MR G TURNER, Ch Bodebi Rhythm Is A Dancer. Bitch CC : COX Mr B D S & Mrs P A, Ch Wish Upon A Star Over Tricianbri Sh.CM. Res Bitch CC : ROE Mr & Mrs D, Sunshoo Imakool Kat Gleniren. Best Puppy : MILLER Miss K F Feorlig Versace. I hear Kirsty went on to take Puppy group 3 with "Versace", so well done to them both and to all the winners at Birmingham.

Eileen Roberts had some very good news about her Phalene: Serenglade Flagship by Rayol or "Nelson" as he is known, he has become the first Phalene to gain his Junior Champion title under the new Irish FCI rules, Nelson also has 2 Green Stars and 3 reserves and has also won the Junior Celtic Winner '08 title . I am so tempted to say " Quite a Victory for Nelson"............. Nelson is shown over in Ireland by Diane Mooney. Since Ireland adopted F.C.I. rules Phalenes are judged as a separate breed.

What sad news it was to read that Ron John had passed away, after suffering for some time with Cancer. Ron was Secretary of the Toydog of Wales Club and I think at sometime an officer of the South Wales Papillon Club, such a nice chap who always liked to stop for a chat at shows. I am sure we all send our condolences to Rons family.

The South Of England Papillon Club are making plans for their first Championship Show which will be held on the 2nd August next year at The Tidworth Leisure Centre. Pledges of perpetual trophies have already been accepted from many kennels, the idea is to get as many trophies which will actually be Shields, ordered "en bloc" to enable us to purchase these at a much reduced price and also to retain some continuity in the design. If you would like to reserve a Shield in the name of your kennel or perhaps one named after a special dog, please contact Keith Langdon on 01452 770117 to reserve the award you would like to donate. At this stage only reservations are being taken and all donors will be advised of the price prior to purchase. We shall be seeking to gain sponsorship for the show and we hope to offer some really nice specials, so anyone out there who would like to donate a World Cruise or something similar do let me know.

A liitle more show news would be welcome so dont be shy.........

30 May
Dog World Three championship shows in just over a week as well as a Breed Club Opens Show made for a busy few days for some. At Birmingham National, with Liz Cartledge standing in for designated judge Betty Flavell, Dog CC and BOB went to Joe Magri's Frasermar Farenheit For Rozamie being his second CC, Bitch CC to Pat and Brian Cox's Ch Wish Upon A Star Over Tricianbri Sh.CM, Res Dog CC to John and the late Gary Turner's Ch Bodebi Rhythm Is A Dancer and res Bitch CC to Carolyn and David Roe's Sunshoo Imakool Kat Gleniren. BP was Kirsty Miller's Feorlig Versace who went on to take PG3.

On to the SKC where Irene and Glenn Robb did the double taking Bitch CC and BOB with Ch Gleniren Starlight Kisses and Dog CC with UK/Fin/Bel/Int Ch Siljans My Man. It was a double in the reserves to for Sean Carroll and James Newman taking Res Dog CC with Denemore Icons Ruben and Res Bitch CC with Denemore Icon's Butterfly Ir Ch. BP was Mary Whitehill's Gennasus Speak To Me.

The day following SKC was the Papillon Club of Scotland's Championship show and from reports seen it was a very well run, friendly and enjoyable day for the exhibitors. Dog CC and BIS went to Amy Mason's Thoughts Of Stardom At Amsema JW, his second CC I believe and Amy's first BIS at a Club Championship Show so I am sure a special day for her. In bitches it was also a second CC for Jo Davidson Poston's Spinillons Saffire ShCM, Jo did the double in the bitches taking the Reserve CC with Spinillons Isadora. Res Dog CC went to Joe Magri's Frasermar Farenheit For Rozamie with BPIS going to Angela Skelton's Adnamashan One In A Million.

Over in Ireland at the Hibernian Dog Clubs 1st International Show, in Papillons BOB & GSD went to Sean Carroll and James Newman's Denemore Icons Ruben who also took G3, Dog CACIB & RGSD to Diane Mooney's Omaonaig Fire Bird, Res. Dog CACIB to Clarke's Tedlyn Sunlit River, GSB & Bitch CACIB to Sean and James' Ch. Denemore Icons Butterfly, RGSB & Res. Bitch CACIB to Diane's Omaonaig Gossamer Wings. Best Puppy was Diane's Omaonaig Midnight Fire taking PG4. In Phalenes the only awards issued were BOB, GSB & Bitch CACIB which went to Sue Morrel, Thesbina Teague and Eilish Neally's Temelora Nichole.

On the same day as the Papillon Club of Scotland held its championship show there was a Breed Club Open Show at the opposite end of the country, the South of England Papillon Club's show. I understand another enjoyable and successful day for the club and its members. BIS went to Kirsty Miller's Feorlig Midnight in Georgia JW. Next year the South of England Papillon Club will be holding its first Championship Show, to have achieved championship show status in such a relatively short time is perhaps a reflection of the dedication that both the committee and officers and the members themselves have put into the many and varied events that the club has held over the years. Not least of which is the vast amount of money they have raised for various charities. I am sure when the day of the show arrives there will be much justified pride from all concerned and that the show will mirror the professionalism with which their past events have become known. One of the driving forces behind the club is of course the Club Secretary, Phil Shirley, who has always been kind enough to let me have news from the club for these notes, something not all the breed clubs bother to do. I am sure their members and exhibitors appreciate this. Phil writes about the forthcoming show "The South Of England Papillon Club are busy making plans for their first Championship Show which will be held on the 2nd August next year at The Tidworth Leisure Centre. We shall be seeking to gain sponsorship for the show and we hope to offer some really nice specials, so anyone out there who would like to donate a World Cruise or something similar do let me know."

I recently mentioned in these notes the 3 Breed Classes being sponsored at the Southend on Sea Open Show by the Papillon (Butterfly Dg) Cub and I understand that there was a super entry of 33 papillons there on the day. Whilst normally Dog World will not print details of breed wins at Open Shows I hope they will allow me to mention them here given that it was a sponsored show. BOB went to Lucindale Ahoy Titoyti Of Aristopaps with BP going to Inixia Fortune Seeker for Shirando.

Lots of show news for you, firstly up in Scotland, saw the back to back shows of SKC and The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club of Scotland Ch. Show which took place last weekend. It was great to see so many Phalenes entered at the show ,16 in total with only one absentee, and Mesdames: Morrell and Teague, Roberts and Smith & Greeenslade must be complimented on the advancement of the Phalene in the south. One sad moment was the announcement that the Clubs Chairman, Pearl Peacock decided to step down as Chairman, a position she has held since the clubs foundation, in thanks for her dedication to the club, Mrs Peacock was presented with a bouquet of flowers and was also created the First President of the club along with Honorary Life Membership. The continuing Raffle for the CISPAP special edition (kindly donated By Dierdre Ashdown & Mike Foster) sold some more tickets and hopefully will be drawn at the Open show of The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club in June. The money from this raffle is to go towards the considerable costs involved in treating the 3 Papillons that were recently taken into Welfare. Do buy a ticket, it is a wonderful prize and a wonderful cause also.
