Breed Notes for March 2008

Reproduced with kind permission of Dog World & Our Dogs

7th March
Dog World Entries for Crufts are out and this year we have some 251 dogs entered making 276 entries, it will be a busy day for our judge. We are not however this year the second highest toy entry having been overtaken by Pugs. My apologies to Joe Magri who kindly telephoned and left a message on the answer phone after having had a super day out at the Cambridge City Open Show. Unfortunately somehow or other the message got transferred from the current messages to the 'read' messages before I had taken the details, I am pleased to say not deleted completely but I have only just picked the details up again. Anyway as I say he had a super day with his 10 month old tri colour puppy Frasermar Cool As Ice With Rosamie who he had taken out for a little extra training and walked off with everything. BOB, BPIB, G1 and PG1, BIS and BPIS!!! At the Dumfries & Galloway Canine Society show Sue Deamer's Abbeyton Ill be Willing to Tri at Bankshill took BOB and Group 1. And at the Highland CA Limited show Sue Gray's 7 month old puppy Gennasus Rambling Rose took RBPIS. Whilst I try and report such wins I would mention that Dog World's policy is only to allow me to print wins where Group or In Show placements are won. I am afraid BOB's and BPIB's on their own cannot be printed. Sheila Cameron has asked me to mention that her e-mail address as printed in her advertisement in the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's latest Handbook is incorrect, her correct address is sheilacameron[at]hotmail[dot]com.
Our Dogs

I do apologise for no notes last week: we had a visit from the canine Stork, and by the time the dust had settled I had missed the deadline for sending stuff in. So sorry.

Lots of open show news: At the Cardiff show on 27 Jan., Morrell's Temelora Storm Brewin (aged 9 months only) won RBPIS - well done. At the Portsmouth and Southsea show, the Back's Kazkell Ching Ching for Leighroy did it again, winning BP and Puppy Group 2; on the same day at Derby & Dist. his litter sister, shown by Karen, Kazkell Tina The Dreamer, won BPIB (her seventh in a row!) and then took Toy Puppy Group 1. At Annandale C.S., under judge Ian Willey, Pat Urwin's Paparottsie Painted Lady was BOB and Toy Group 2 - congratulations to all of them
At Harrogate C.S. show on 17 Feb. it was again a winning day for the Maskells, Kazkell Clockwork Dream took BOB, and K. Velvet Dream, at only 7 months, won the PG class, BPIB, under Joyce Shipley, and went on to be 4th Best Puppy in Show (BIS judge, Mrs Thelma Cass) - well done.
There was a good turn-out of Papillons at the North Wales Toydog Society show held at Nantwich, where Burns's Petitchien's Fifilamour won BOB and was listed in the final five for BIS, and Petitchien Tri'Lemma Latte, from the same kennel, was BPIB, under judge Mrs D. Fry (Amantra). At the N.E. of England Toydog Soc. show, Thornton's Penang Tycoon At Shevid took BOB (at 10 years of age!) and their Shevid French Lace took BOS (at 6 months!) - that must have looked amazing! And at the same show Clint's Dolcissimo Rocky took BPIB at 9 months. At the Dumfries C.S. show on 18 Feb., Deamer's Abbeyton I'll Be Willing To Tri At Bankshill won BOB and Toy Group 1. At the Maidenhead C.S. show, Miller's Feorlig Midnight In Georgia won BOB, Davidson-Poston's Spinillons Saffire won BP and AV Toy Puppy, and Chandler's Barleybright Buttons 'n' Bows won A.V. Toy. All very good indeed, and lots of good days out for a lot of dogs!

I have a note from Joan Savage to say that, for anyone interested in showing at the Scottish Toydog Soc. Open Show in April this year, the schedule can be downloaded from www.scottishtoydogsociety.co.uk - six classes for Paps are scheduled.

Not such good news from Phil - Rodney has had a nasty fall and has fractured his kneecap - sounds so painful. I'm sure we all send our best wishes and sympathy to him - really bad luck to do things like that on holiday. Another accident-sufferer is Eileen Clayton (who members will remember produced the beautiful display for the Papillon Discover Dogs stand last year (and the year before) - which contributed so much to our winning the prize for the Best Breed Booth 2007). She had a nasty fall and has broken her arm badly right at the shoulder - I do hope she will be feeling better soon, it must be extremely painful. But don't worry about the stand, the rest of the team will muscle in and get it up and running. We always have such a lot of visitors at the booth, and I think the dogs enjoy all the petting and attention: the benefit of the boards is that the information with the pictures is big enough for people to read it from outside the booth - so it's something you can be absorbing while you wait to pat a Pap!

Probably everyone by now has had notice of the change of Date and Venue for the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's AGM: this will now be held on Sunday 27 April at 2 p.m. at Napton Village Hall (same venue as last year): this is near Southam and Coventry, and rather rural, so pay attention to the directions on the notice and don't worry if you appear to be driving through a farmyard at one point!

Lastly, I have notice of a new address for the Gleniren kennel - they have moved to: xxxxxxxxxxxxx Cheshire xxxxxxxxxx (Tel: xxxxxxxxxx). Hope the dogs have settled in OK!

Thank you to all for news - please keep it coming.

I hear from a delighted Viv Cotton that Ir Ch Aporia Chiassoso bred I believe by Viv's son Stuart and campaigned in Ireland by Diane Mooney was the Top Phalene in Ireland for 2007. A little good news for Viv who has not been too well lately, hopefully things will improve this year enough to enable Viv to get out and about a little bit more.
Helen Lister writes on behalf of the United Kingdom Toydog Society and has asked me to print the following in the notes. "The United Kingdom Toydog Society is holding a Toy Breeds Rescue and Rehoming Seminar on Sunday 13 April 2008 at The Stone House Hotel, Stone, Staffordshire, M6 - exits 14/15. Rescue & rehoming is difficult work, undertaken by volunteers who often provide their own funding. This essential and comprehensive seminar will explore toy breed rescue & rehoming and will aim to share best practice covering all aspects, from a team of experts in their field, including Trevor Cooper (specialist Canine Lawyer) on legal issues of rescue & rehoming; finance, funding and the advantages of Charitable status, insurance needs for rescues; a Rescue Coordinator’s role , the Kennel Club Charitable Trust and the perspective of rescue and rehoming from a National Dog Rescue charity. Concluding the day, with an open forum to exchange ideas and views. No rescue can operate in isolation and this is the perfect opportunity to network and share best practice with like minded people. There is a nominal charge of £15 for the day, which includes refreshments, buffet lunch and a comprehensive manual. Anyone interested in participating, please contact Helen Lister tel: 015394 43343 or email hm.lister@btinternet.com. We are hoping to have each toy breed rescue organisation present and thank you in anticipation of helping to promote this worthy cause."

There's not a lot of news this week - I think everyone must be busy getting ready for Crufts. The only show result I have is for the Blackpool & Fylde Toy Dog Society's show on 24 Feb., where Brenda Taylor judged: she awarded BOB to Urwin's Paparottsie Painted Lady, and BP to Raper and Maskell's Definately A Lady For Kennice - congratulations to both.

One bit of interesting information that members may like to think about is that vets at the moment report that there are quite a lot of cases of lung-worm being diagnosed. It is thought that some of the popular worming tablets do not give protection against this parasite, called Angiostrongylus, which is picked up from snails. I know many small dogs who rush into the house, foaming at the mouth, obviously saying 'wow, look what I've found!', and one then has to try and extract snails, accompanied with foaming green slime, from their very unwilling jaws. Joking apart, if contracted this infection can be fatal to young puppies, so it's worth having a word with your vet. There is a complete worming tablet that is, in addition, also efficient against this worm: I had better not mention the commercial name, as I might be advertising, but your vet will be able to tell you.

Hope Crufts is an enjoyable day for all. Shall look forward to all the news.

Our Dogs Now that all the excitement of Crufts has died down it seems even quieter on the news front! I expect people will have noticed that the remaining bitch results which did not appear on the web sites are now given in 'Dog World'. For those still in the dark, they were - Open: (1) (CC) Robb's Ch. Gleniren Starlight Kisses; (2) Bartram's Ch. Burghbridge Ura Golden Lady; (3) Smith's Wee Lucy of Adinaken. The overall results, though, prove what a super day was had by Papplewick! - they featured very strongly all through, winning both Reserves: Papplewick Par Excellence in Dogs (with Papplewick Perfect Pitch running second to him!) and Candygolds Young At Heart Of P. in Bitches. In between, Candygolds Daydreamer at P. won Graduate Dog. I should think they are having a good few celebratory days!

I can give rather belated results from Ireland: at Newtownards All Breeds Ch. Show on 24 Feb., where Mrs I. McManus judged, the DGS went to Beck's Baladora Sleek But Shiek, and the RDGS to Belshaw's Belvisaj Simply Charming; the BGS and BOB went to Mooney's Omaonaig Gossamer Wings and RBGS to Belshaw's Belvisaj I Believe I Can Fly. Although there were no actual Phalène classes, Mooney's Ch. Aporia Chiassoso won from the NSC class judged by Sean Carroll.

Only other news at the moment is that Phil is not well and is undergoing investigation for an irregular heartbeat. He still sounded in good form, however, and Rodney's knee is apparently, luckily, mending well. So Get Well to both of them - not to mention, Come Back Soon!

Dog World
Our Dogs I'm sorry to report that Mr and Mrs Cook's winning puppy Buddy (Bedellus Rave On To Julandia) managed to drop off a chair early on the morning of Crufts, and broke his leg quite badly. He's had it plated now, however, and is beginning to put weight on it already, so the future looks quite bright and we hope to see him back in the ring in a reasonable time. I gather he has only 9 more points for his Junior Warrant, so I hope he makes it in time.

Eilish Neally emails from Ireland ' The Irish Kennel Club have just released schedules for the European Winners Show, to be held in June 2009 at the RDS. For more information contact: IKC, Fottrell House, Harolds Cross Bridge, Dublin 6W (Phone 00353 01 4533300 or Fax 00353 01 4533237). Also, the Papillon Club of Ireland schedules are out for our breed show on the 24th May 2008. Phalene classes are scheduled. Contact Claire Anne Ahern 00353 01 8325187.'

At the St Patrick's Day Irish Kennel Club Celtic Winners Show in Cloghran, the winners were: BOB & GSD - Ch. Bodebi Ray of Success, RGSD - Belvisaj Simply Charming; GSB - Ch. Conysluck Magic Flute and RGSB - Parnassus Perfect Joy. The judge was Mr B. Townsend. In Phalènes (judged separately), the winners were: BOB & GSD - Int. Ch. Austrene Academy Award, RGSD - Serenglade Flagship By Rayol; GSB - Ch. Aporia Chiassoso, and RGSB - Austrene Hollywood Calling Carasweet. Congratulations to all.

At Newton Aycliffe & Dist. C.S. Open Show, Papillons were judged by Margaret Wildman. She awarded Best of Breed to Stevenson's Papplewick Perfect Pitch, and BP to Clint's Dolcissimo Rocky, who also went Puppy Group 3. At Worksop D.C.S., where Mr B. Claydon judged Paps, BOB went to Bruce & Bruce-Jackson'sTijuana Lady Charlotte, and the RBOB was Maskell's Kazkell Tina The Dreamer, who went on to be 4th BPIS.

Congratulations to them, and also to Mr and Mrs Back's Kazkell Ching-Ching for Leighroy who won BP, RBOB and PG3 at Woolwich & Bexley C.S., where I think Caton's Red Bequest UR Ringlands took BOB.

Carolyne Allward-Chebsey sends information for the juniors in the breed, so please take note: 'I am pleased to announce that Vikki Loader has taken over from Claire Butler, writing the Junior Newsletter for the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Newsletter. Vikki would welcome any news from the Juniors in the Breed and can be contacted on : xxxxxxxxxxx (best time to get Vikki is after 6pm) or by email: butterfly_starlet_22@hotmail.co.uk or by writing to her at c/o 15 Bronyon Close, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, IP33 3 XB or by giving her your news at the shows. Please make a note of Vikki's email address as it is shown incorrectly in the Spring issue of the newsletter which is due out in April.'

The South of England Papillon Club will be holding its annual charity event on 3rd May 2008, after their AGM in the morning. This year, instead of a Sponsored Walk, they have challenged the South Wales PC to a Sponsored Match (Puppy and Adult) to raise money for an English charity - The Cinnamon Trust - and a Welsh one, Pets-in-Need (Carmarthen) - a small but very worthwhile Sanctuary (a selection of their Newsletters and details of their work can be seen at the Match). This will take place at Chieveley Recreation Centre, Nr. Newbury; Averil Cawthera-Purdy has very kindly agreed to judge, and your Sponsor Forms and details will be in the post by next week. Delicious lunch will be available by our usual professionals (£5 a head), free tea and coffee - so please do your best to get your dogs sponsored to take part in this Great Event! Papillon owners everywhere are welcome - you can decide which Club to play for when you arrive, and your baby puppies will again be welcome to try out their first steps (duly sponsored, of course! - we want to raise as much as possible for our charities - dog rather than human ones this year).

Schedules are also out for the South of England club's Open Show on 17 May (same venue): contact Keith Langdon if you haven't received one and want to enter - judge is John Fothergill (email: skyvana1@yahoo.co.uk or phone xxxxxxxxx).

For any people who had heard a rumour that Phil is not well - it is true, but we hope that by now he is much better. If anyone wants to email Get Well wishes, his email is philrod@ntlworld.com - I'm sure he would like that. He should be back by middle of April.

That's it, I think - many thanks for all your news, please keep it coming
