Breed Notes for February 2008

Reproduced with kind permission of Dog World & Our Dogs

1st February
Dog World At Manchester Dog CC and BOB went to Irene Robb's UK/Fin/Bel/Int Ch Siljans My Man who went on to take G3. Bitch CC, a first for both dog and owner, went to Tom and Pat Unwin's Paparottsie Painted Lady, Res Dog CC to Jenny Scovell's Ch Caswell Classic Tri, who won through from the veteran class, Res Bitch CC to Kirsty Miller's Feorlig Midnight In Georgia JW. BP went to Joe Magri with Frasermar Farenheit For Rozamie.

Carole Hatch mentions that once again UK Toydog Society will be hosting KC Obedience classes for toy dogs only. As Carole says many toy dog owners love to compete in obedience but are often put off by the big boisterous Collies, Shepherds, Gundogs etc. So the ideal opportunity to put your dogs through their paces in less boisterous company. Full details of course will be in the schedules.
Carolyne Allward Chebsey is looking for a number of old Papillon (Butterfly Dog Club Newsletters to complete the Club's archives. The issues in questions are numbers: 136 (Summer 1997), 139, 141, 142, 143 and 155. If anyone has a spare copy of any of these or is willing to give their own copy for the archives please contact Carolyne.

A note from Sue Caton tells me that Red Bequest Ur Ringlands, jointly owned by Sue and Jon Caton, took BOB and G3 at Ashford, Faversham and Dist. Open Show 6th Jan 2008 and that with his BOB at Dover and Deal CS Open Show 20th Jan 2008, this gives him his Sh CM, subject to KC approval.
Our Dogs For those (probably not very many) who still have not heard the results of Manchester Championship Show, they were as follows: Mrs G. Jane Lilley was judging and gave the DCC and BOB to the Robb's Fin Ch Siljans My Man, who then won 3rd in the Toy Group under Ferelith Somerfield - many congratulations. The Bitch CC went to a real newcomer, Mr and Mrs Urwin's Paparottsie Painted Lady - their day must have been a truly exciting one! The Reserves went to Jenny Scovell's Ch Caswell Classic Tri (from the Veteran class) and the Millers' Feorlig Midnight in Georgia. Best Puppy was Mr Magri's Frasermar Farenheit For Rozamie: well done to all of those.

Don't forget that entries for the Northern & Eastern Papillon Club Open Show close on 4 Feb.: the show is on 2 March at Thorpe Willoughby Village Hall, near Selby, and the Judge is Eileen Roberts (Rayol), with Liz Bartram (Burghbridge) judging Junior Handling. Entries to John Edson as usual, 18 Mill Lane, Tadcaster LS24 9EG (phone him on 01757-268213 if you need a schedule).

Sue Allen, Acting Secretary of the South Wales P.C. committee, asks me to include the following: 'South Wales Papillon Club are celebrating their 30th Anniversary since its inauguration, therefore Catalogues for the Open Show on Sun 6th April 2008 will again feature a three-generation pedigree of all exhibits. The Club’s AGM will take place immediately after the show. AGM papers and a Schedule, which is included in the package, have now been posted to members. Our judge this year is Mrs June Gummer (Juara). Anyone who has not yet received their papers or would like a schedule can do so by downloading from our website or contacting Sue Stanbury or Sue Allen'.

I think that's all the news - not much this week, I'm afraid. Do keep the news coming in, or this column might get a bit boring. I'm very happy to get phone calls (sometimes easier than email - as those who know me will guess!) but, please, not at 10.45 p.m. at night!
8th February
Dog World Sue Allen, Acting Secretary of the South Wales Papillon Club has asked me to print the following:- "South Wales Papillon Club are celebrating their 30th Anniversary since its inauguration, therefore catalogues for the Open Show on Sunday 6th April 2008 will again feature a 3 generation pedigree of all exhibits. The Club's AGM will take place immediately after the show. AGM papers and a schedule, which is included in the package, have now been posted to members. Our judge this year is Mrs June Gummer (Juara).Anyone who has not yet received their papers or would like a schedule can do so by downloading from our web site or contacting Sue Stanbury or Sue Allen (Acting Secretary) ." Congratulations to the Club in reaching this milestone, it certainly does not seem 30 years ago that the then proposed Secretary Gina Hughes was gathering support for the formation of the Club. I have fond memories of the early days of the club, having judged at its Open Show and its first Championship Show some 20 odd years ago.

Carolyne Allward Chebsey, Secretary of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club writes :"Just a reminder, if you have articles or items that you would like to see in the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's Newsletter, please send them to me. The closing date is 28th February. It would be appreciated if you could please send them to me as soon as you can so I can work the design and pages out. Many thanks".

Congratulations to young Amelia Whipps and Francesca McWade who kept the flag flying for our Junior Handlers in the Pedigree Junior Handler of the year Finals. Both I am told acquitted themselves very well and Amelia managed a very creditable 6th place. Her tasks included handling a Saluki which she had only met for a few minutes, not an easy task for anyone.

A sad time at the moment for losing some of our older papillons, four have recently passed away. Jo Davidson Poston has lost Ibstock Distinctly Sparky for Spinillons, bred by Rosemary Ayris, who of course as many will remember was stolen in August 2004 and miraculously returned to Jo some 12 months later. Given the history I am sure this loss must be even harder. Josie and John Mann have sadly lost their Ch Bonifee Sofisicated Lady, Posie as she was known had been a little under the weather for a short time even so her loss was a shock. Sue Morrell has lost her Ch Serenglade Seraphim, bred of course by Linda Greenslade, I am sure many will remember this lovely little tri bitch from the ring. And lastly I hear that Alan Pearch has lost Bonnie of Daffodillwoods, from the last litter I understand bred by Mark Hutchings and Clarice Waud she was owned by Clarice's cousin Peter up until his death year or two ago when she was taken in by Alan and his wife. She was a grand age of some 17 years and none months, I suspect the last to hold the Daffodilwoods prefix.

I mentioned in earlier notes that the positions of Chairman and Show Manager were vacant and I now understand that in fact this is not the case. Having got the information from the Preliminary Notice of the AGM in the Club's Newsletter I assumed it was correct but it appears this is not the case. As far as I am now aware Roger Banfield is seeking re-election as Chairman and Keith Langdon is seeking re-election as Show Manager. Please note there has also been a change of date and venue for the AGM from that shown in the Preliminary Notice. It will now be held the following day, Sunday April 27 2008 at Napton Village Hall. I must admit I had not noticed before that it was originally planned to hold the AGM at WELKS after judging, and it seems rather a strange decision to have made in the first place. The Club's AGM is too important to be held 'when judging has been finished' and presumably in the open or in a tent.
Our Dogs Carolyne Allward-Chebsey asks me to remind everyone that the closing date for sending articles and news for printing in the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's Newsletter is 28 February, so please get writing: anyone producing a newsletter must have the input of the members, or the newsletter will no longer be representative of the members - so please meet the deadline. Her email address is Carolyne@lorahspaps.co.uk

The Schedule for the South Wales Papillon Club's Open Show on Sunday 6 April, at Caerwent Community Centre, Nr Caldicot, Mon. (Judge: June Gummer (Juara)), is now out, and contains voting papers and notice of the AGM, which takes place after the show. You can vote for members of the committee and for judges so, again, please get on with filling these in and exercising your democratic vote! Send your completed voting papers to the Scrutineer - Ian Dack - without delay. Entries for the show close on 6 March.

Carole Hatch reminds Papillon members that UK Toydog, at their championship show on Sat. 29 March, will once again be hosting KC Obedience classes for toy dogs only: this is a great opportunity for obedience trainees (and I wish mine were!) to compete against their own size, and also important for the UK Toydog Society to have your entries - so get these in. Entries close, I know, on 4 Feb. but you can still enter online at www.dog.biz up to 12 noon on 11 Feb.

Congratulations to Amelia Whipps for winning 6th place in the Pedigree Junior Handler of the Year Finals: she handled a Saluki as her second dog, so not just a well-trained Pap to cope with!

Quite a few shows last weekend to report: at Henley & Dist. C.S. open show, judged by Karen Maskell, Jo Davidson-Poston's Spinillons Saffire won BP and BOB, and then went on to the glories of Group 1 in the Toy Puppy Group and Group 4 in the Toy Group, ending up Reserve Best Puppy in Show - many congratulations! At the Dartford & Dist. C.S. open show on Sunday Margaret Unwin had a good day under judge Shelda Hornby, where her Inixia Dream's Magic won BOB and Magic's son, Inixia Touched by Magic, was Reserve BOB to him: Magic himself then went on to win Group 3 in the Toy Group - well done to both of them, and their owner, of course! Congratulations also to Sue Caton on her dog Bentley (Red Bequest UR Ringlands) attaining his ShCM.

On a sadder note, a number of well-loved oldies (dogs, that is) have passed away this last week. Jo Davidson-Poston's little dog Sparky (Ibstock Distinctly Sparky for Spinillons) - members will remember that Sparky was stolen out of her mother's garden and turned up amazingly a whole year later - sadly died after an eventful 13 years: but since apparently he had been predicted by her vet to only live a couple of years, he certainly got the best of him! The last dog bred by Clarice Waud, Bonnie of Daffodilwoods, who was the lifelong companion of Clarice's cousin, Peter Rolt, died on Sunday at the good age of 18. Peter himself lived to a ripe old age, but eventually went into a nursing home, where he died last year: Alan and Denise Pearch took on Bonnie, and she was very happy with them for the last two years of her life. It would be interesting to know if there are any other Daffodilwoods around still, or whether she was the last of that kennel: newer members may not know that Clarice Waud was Secretary of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club for many years.. Sue Morrell has lost Ch Serenglade Seraphim ('Lucky'), bred by Linda Greenslade, after a good show career and happy retirement, and John and Josie Mann have also lost Bonifee Sophisicated Lady - it's been a sad week.

On a cheerful note, many congratulations go to Joe Magri, who took Frasermar Cool As Ice (10 months) to the City of Cambridge C.S. Open show, 'just for experience', and came away quite elated: the puppy won BPIB and BOB under Pug judge Miss A. Cooper (Mygang), went on to win the Toy Puppy Group under another Pug judge, Amanda Ellis, and ended up BIS (and automatically BPIS) under a gundog judge, Trudy Short! That must have been something special!

A last snippet on an Obedience triumph! At the Meopham Limited Show, 'Solly' (Murvagh Finn McCool), at 17 months and at his first go at Test A, came 4th out of 24. For those ignorant (like me) of the tests for obedience, Test A has no 'extra' commands: your dog, when sent on the retrieve, for instance, has to return, sit and offer the retrieved item, and then 'finish', i.e. round the back of your legs to then sit at your left, with no extra words from you! Very impressive, and many congratulations to him and his trainer. At the same show, another Papillon came second in the Novice class, but I'm afraid I don't know his name - but congratulations to him/her as well.

Thanks for all the news this week: please keep it coming - Phil won't be back for ages yet!

The Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Cub ran a very successful Breed Specific Seminar on 3 February 2008 and the general opinion was that everyone there enjoyed the experience very much. Jim Robins who coordinated the event for the Club would like to thank everyone for their patience. Anyone with access to the internet can view the Club's web site including a Diary of Events at http://www.papclubne.freeserve.co.uk/ Perhaps now would be a good time to mention the annual Calendar competition for the Club, entries for which will this year close on I believe 30 June. However an advance warning will hopefully ensure there is not a mad rush at the end to take those photos, hopefully with a pleasant Spring to come there should be ample opportunity for those special camera shots.

I am pleased to be able to print some agility news, often disciplines other than confirmation showing are overlooked which is a shame as (and we all know) papillons are so versatile. But if I am not given the news I cannot print it. However I did hear from Denise Welsh that at the recent C-Side Agility show, held at Golden Cross Equestrian Centre, Denise had arranged with the organisors to run a Papillon only jumping class and the results were: 1st Val Clark with Echo (R); 2nd Sheila Partridge with Smokey (R); 3rd Denise Welsh with Angel (Bedellus Heaven Sent to Kazim); 4th Angie Tydeman with Tio (R) twelve years old; 5th Sheila Partridge with Blaze (R) who had been on death row and was rescued just in time. (R) indicates that the dog was a rescue, and all rescued I might add by Denise, and several had very sad stories. Tio was a very aggressive dog and Angie has managed to turn him around, to the stage now where at 12 years of age he is still fit enough to compete and get places, even though he has lost most of his hearing. Blaze had also bitten someone (so we are told) and was about to make the one way trip when Jo Davidson-Poston called Denise, it was a team effort to get him but now Blaze has the most lovely home and is very much loved and now understood. I am sure the first thing we will all think when we read this is what a wonderful task Denise and the new owners have done with these dogs. The second thing that struck me is how sad that so many papillons now seem to be ending up in Rescue. I wish I knew what the answer was to this problem, all I do know is that all of us who breed must be even more careful, and also all who have stud dogs equally have a responsibility for the welfare of any puppies their dogs produce. The Stud Dog owner's responsibility does not end when the stud fee is paid.

I have been asked by the Secretary of Cheshire Agricultural Show to mention that Papillon's will now be judged by Mrs Val Blore and not as stated in the schedule. I am afraid the Secretary has not mentioned when the show is to be held but I assume those of you who attend will know.

Keith Rimmer would be grateful if anyone who has cups or trophies for the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Championship Show in April would ensure that they are returned in time for the show. Keith can be contacted on 0151 226 4322. These can be passed on to any committee member at a show or alternatively you can ring Keith to make arrangements for their return.

We seem to be getting news of more and more success for Papillons at the shows these days, or maybe folk are a little more willing to pass on their good news. Anyway a quick round up. At Cardiff Open Show, which I understand hosted all international judges from Malta, Sue Morrell and Thesbina Teague's Temelora Storm Brewin took RBPIS at 9 months of age. At Pontefract and District Open Show Ann Stevenson's Papplewick Perfect Pitch took BOB and G1 and Debbie Burns' Petitchien Tri'Lemm Latte took BP and PG!, a good day their for the Breed. At Rugby and District Open Sow Leigh and Roy Back's Kazkell Ching-Ching for Leighroy took BP and BOB and took the 4th place in both the Group and the Puppy Group. At Slough & District Open Show Kirsty Miller's Feorlig Midnite in Georgia JW took Best AVNSC Toy and went on to take BIS. And finally at the Cumberland and Canine Society Open Show Sue Deamer's Abbeyton Ill be Willing to Tri at Bankshill took BOB and G4 with her Loose Lane Legend at Bankshill taking BP and PG1.

Our Dogs

As I type this, it really feels as though spring is on the way - I bet it doesn't last, though. All the dogs are out in the garden, engaged in their spring-time activities of digging up the lawn, so they can obviously feel something in the air.

A note from the Secretary of the Guildford D.C.S.: their Open Show will be on 28 May, and their schedule is on line at www.guildforddcs.co.uk - they would welcome entries. The venue for the show is about 1 hour from the Southern Counties camp site, so, if you are heading south for the Bath/Southern Counties shows, please consider joining them.
A plea from Keith Rimmer - if anyone has any cups or trophies for the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club championship show in April, please contact Keith, or any other committee member. He says, 'Please can all past class winners from past shows check all little hidey holes you may have, to see if there are any papillon club trophies lurking around'.
Open Shows are now getting going, and there are some good results to report. Ann Stevenson's Papplewick Perfect Pitch went BOB at the Pontefract & Dist. C.S. under breed judge Debbie Gornall, and then went on to win the Toy Group under Robin Searle - well done! At the same show, Debbie Burns's Petitchien Tri'Lemm Latte won Best Puppy and then topped the Toy Puppy Group! At the Slough & Dist. open show, the Miller's Feorlig Midnight In Georgia, JW, won AV Toy under Mark Cocozza and ended up BIS under Nick Bryce-Smith - good day for them. At the Rugby & Dist. show at Ryton-on-Dunsmore, the Back's Kazkell Ching Ching for Leighroy (no newcomer to this page!) took BOB from the Junior class under Eddie Bishop, and 4th in the Toy Group under Terry Nethercott - congratulations!

Denise Welsh writes in with Agility results: 'Yesterday at the C-Side Agility show, held at Golden Cross Equestrian Centre, I had arranged with the organisers to run a Papillon-only jumping class and the results are as follows: !st Val Clark with Echo (R); 2nd Sheila Partridge with Smokey (R); 3rd Denise Welsh with Angel (Bedellus Heaven Sent to Kazim); 4th Angie Tydeman with Tio (R) (twelve years old); 5th Sheila Partridge with Blaze (R) (had been on death row, rescued just in time!). ((R) means rescue dog.) As you can see, all but one of the above dogs are rescues (proud to say all by me). All the handlers have worked very hard to get these dogs to a stage where they can win or get a good place in an agility competition; Tio was a very aggressive dog and Angie has managed to turn him around, to the stage now where, at 12 years of age, he is still fit enough to compete and get places, even though he has lost most of his hearing. Blaze had also bitten someone (so we are told) and was about to make the one-way trip when Jo Davidson-Poston called me - it was a team effort to get him, but now Blaze has the most lovely home and is very much loved and now understood.'

At the Cumberland C.S. open show, Sue Deamer's Abbeyton I'll Be Willing To Tri won BOB and went on to 4th place in the Toy Group, while, at the same show, her puppy, Loose Lane Legend at Bankshill, won BPIB and (I think) group 1 in the Toy Puppy Group (please, when you email, will you make sure everything is plain!). Many congratulations there also. Lastly, at the East Kent C.S. open show, the Cook's Bedellus Rave On To Julandia won BOB and Toy Group 3, while 7-months-old Leymarchi's Kazar for Bedellus (at his first show) won BPIB. A good day for Cooks and Beadles!
Sue Allen, Acting Sec. of the South Wales club, adds to last week's announcement of their Open Show and AGM, as follows: 'The South Wales Papillon Club are celebrating their 30th Anniversary since its inauguration, therefore catalogues for the Open Show on Sunday 6th April 2008, will again feature a three generation pedigree of all exhibits. Our Judge this year is Mrs June Gummer (Juara) The Club's AGM will take place immediately after the show. AGM papers and a schedule, which is included in the package have now been posted to members. If however any members have not yet received their papers, please contact Sue Stanbury or myself, Sue Allen (Acting Secretary), or if you would like a schedule, again contact one of the above or easier still you can download from the South Wales Papillon Club website.'

That's all, I think - news is coming in well, thank you! Please always be sure to get all the facts correct, so I don't then have to ring round confirming things - that would be a great help! No news from Phil - rumour has it that there is a power shortage in Cape Town - maybe he will come back home earlier!

A reminder that schedules for the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Championship Show to be held at the usual venue of the Sports Connexion, Ryton on Dunsmore, have been sent to all who have exhibited at the Club's Championship and Open Shows in the last two years. If you have not received a schedule these are available from Jean Banfield tel:xxxxxx. Judges this year are Mark Billinghurst (Dogs) and Evelyn Needham (Bitches). Entries close 12 March.

At the prestigious Westminster Show in the USA it was another triumph for the Japanese bred Am Ch Queen Bless JP Principal Kid, sired by Jap Ch Nouveau Lord of Misrule out of Jap Ch Queen Bless Elijah Of Art Etoile JP. As I have mentioned before this dog is all UK bloodlines as his dam is herself by Glasafon Gordon's Lad out of Ch Gonmyn Inspiration. Bred by Chie Ejima he is owned by Madeline Mosing & Chie Ejima & Elizabeth Pyutte. BOS went to Am Ch Ch Betlen Riegel She's A Lady bred by Carlotta Dennie & Elizabeth M Lennon and owned by Elizabeth M Lennon & C Dennie & M Petti. Those with access to the internet might care to view a video of the judging which can be seen at http://video.westminsterkennelclub.org/player/?id...

At the Annandale Canine Society Pat Urwins Paparottsie Painted Lady continued her winning ways taking BOB and G2, added to which Pat's daughter took BPIS with her Lancashire Heeler. Leigh & Roy Back are also having a good run with their Kazkell Ching-Ching for Leighroy, at the Portsmouth and Southsea Open Show they took BP and PG2. Ching Ching's litter sister, owned by the breeder Karen and Steve Maskell, Kazkell Tina the Dreamer took her 7th BPIB in a row at Derby and also took PG2.
