| Dog World | WELKS proved to be a show that Mark Whitehill will never forget. His Junior Dog Frasermar Lost For Words At Martika not only took his first CC and with it BOB but topped the Toy Group and ended up RBIS - I am sure Mark too was 'lost for words'!! Many congratulations to Mark and of course to Lost for Words' breeders Master F & Mrs M A Comrie-Bryant on such a wonderful win. Bitch CC went to Pat Munn's Feorlig Picture Perfect At Ringlands, Reserves went to Terry and Nigel Thurman's Lysandra's Zxar in dogs and in bitches to Joe Magri's Frasermar Fairy Tale Of Rozamie who in fact is litter sister to the BOB winner. They are by Martika What's The Story out of Frasermar Snow Storm. BP went to Julie and Neville Blythin's Diquest Fairy Doll to Julesville Cheryl Lockett recently sadly lost one of her paps during a visit to the vet for routine dental treatment. Some 9 years ago Cheryl wrote an article for a Sheltie Newsletter warning of problems with pre meds and it is sad that such problems are apparently still being experienced. Cheryl can be contacted on cheryl@thekennel.f9.co.uk - she writes "Following a research program at Washington State University & the University of Giessen in Germany, there has been identified a gene mutation resulting in susceptibility in many Collie and some sight hound breeds to many drugs & chemicals including the most commonly used Pre-Med Sedative A.,C.P. Whilst there is no evidence of this gene mutation in Paps, it would be useful to identify if there is a ‘susceptibility' to the pre med A.C.P. which has resulted in any significant number of fatalities, and to coordinate this. I am interested in situations where fit, active and healthy dogs that were admitted like mine for routine operations e.g. Male Castration or teeth cleaning or extraction, who have died after receiving the sedative A.C.P but BEFORE the actual operations had begun. Quite a tight set of criteria really, as deaths occurring during the actual operations could be due to a wider number of factors, e.g. as a result of poor vets techniques or the actual gas mixture or other reasons. Also I am interested to see if there is any Hereditary /i.e. family line connections to the dogs that have succumbed, like us, maybe some are just more sensitive to it than others. There are a whole group of chemicals and drugs that cause the same adverse sensitive response in those dogs identified with the gene mutation - it would be advantageous be able to be forewarned of potential similar reactions in our paps, if a pattern of reaction can be identified. If anyone wants to investigate or do some research themselves the links can be found as follows or if anyone wants to contact me directly for links etc. or background , I am happy to give out the details. Although any errors or omissions in the above are solely my doing , the credit for most of this information goes to: Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology Laboratory, PO Box 2280, Pullman, WA 99165-2280, (Phone/FAX 509-335-3745) e-mail VCPL@vetmed.wsu.edu Web Site http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts-VCPL/ Other info more specific to collie breeds: http://www.mdr1-defekt.de/index.php?lang=EN" I am sorry to have to report that Rita Dack passed away on 25 April. Rita of course was a valued ere of the member of the South Of England Papillon Club and I am sure her efforts will be sadly missed. The funeral is being held on Wednesday 9th June at 12 noon at the Boston Crematorium, Marian Road, Boston PE21 9HA. There are to be no flowers but donations to Rita's favourite charity will be welcomed. Our condolences go to Ian and the family Believe it or not it is that time of the year again when entries open for the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club Calendar competition. Dorothy Simpson who is organising the competition has already received a number of entries. Now is the tie to start taking those photos when the weather is good and the gardens are all looking glorious and colourful. One request fro Dorothy is that if you are sending your photos by email please send them before next Wednesday or after 23rd of May as she will be on holiday until then.(Jimmy will be at home as Dorothy is going to the Artic circle and Jimmy likes the Caribbean- what a wise man!!!) Address to send to is:Brimmond Bungalow, Hazel Old Lane, Hensall, Nr Goole, N Yorks, DN14 0QA Tel Dorothy on 01977 662533 if you have any queries Finally a correction to the notes earlier regarding the Derbyshire Centenary Show - the Breed Judge will in fact be Riitta Maria Kuckenon ( Lilybuds Kennel Finland), Roger Thomas is in fact judging the Stakes Classes. Rosemary and David Ayris are sponsoring the Breed with £5 for BOB, RBOB, BP and 1st Prize Winners as well as the rosettes. |
| Our Dogs | Starting today with some exciting news: Mark Whitehills Frasermar Lost for Words at Martika won reserve Best in Show at W.E.L.K.S. Championship Show, quite an achievement in itself more especially as he came through from the Junior Dog class, many congratulations to Mark. This young dog won the RDCC at the recent Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Ch. show so it sounds like he has an exciting career ahead. I expect there was quite some celebrating back home in Scotland. The main winners from the show judged by Mrs C Lee-Farnsworth were: DCC BOB, G1 and RBIS Frasermar Lost for Words at Martika (Mr M Whitehill), RDCC Lysandras Zxar (Dr & Ms Thurman), BCC Feorlig Picture Perfect at Ringlands (Mrs P Munn), RBCC Frasermar Fairy Tale of Rozamie (Mr J Magri), Best Puppy Diquest Fairy Doll to Julesville (Mr & Mrs N Blythin). It is always sad to hear of people loosing their oldies, I was particularly sorry to hear that Sue Stanbury had lost Ch. Inixia Artful Andrew at 16 years old; Andrew became a champion in 1993. I cannot remember a more animated dog than him, this dog I feel epitomised the true Papillon character, no standing still like a statue for him, I think Sue always had her hands full showing him but he would never have gone unnoticed in the ring. Sadly just a couple of days later there was an announcement that Elizabeth Patrick had lost her “Andrew” daughter Ch Volpecula Flos Campi a very beautiful bitch that became a Champion in 1996. A date for your diaries: 21st July at Bradfield. The South of England Papillon Club will be holding their Fun-Day / Garden Party. This year the event will kick off with the First ever Licensed Limited Agility Show for Papillons, there are many stars now in Papillon Agility so do come along and cheer them on. The Judging starts at 10.00am, the show will be followed by the various Fun-Day activities: all the usual fun classes: Senior and Junior handling, Baby Puppy walk, Games and Sausage races, There will be a Heelwork to Music demonstration. Plenty stalls for Produce, Plants, Cakes (donations to these stalls will be most welcomed) The Club Stall with many new exciting items, there will be a new stall this year: the Bring and Buy Market Stall, if you have any doggie items: boxes, trolleys, leads, beds etc. that you want to sell then bring them along and the club will try to sell them for you for a commission to welfare. Take all your vaccinated baby puppies as this is a great way for them to socialise with others. Free Tea and Coffee will be available all day and a delicious all-in buffet lunch for £5 makes this a great day out. Details of all of this clubs events are available on their website www.southpapclub.co.uk Not many Open show results again this week but I did get some good news from Chris May, at Hyde and District CS Show their; Sharjoy Regency Buck won through to Reserve Best in Show, many congratulations. Checking out the “Gleniren” website recently it was very interesting to see a picture of Glenn in his outfit for his part of “Flattop” in Starlight Express, he is at present touring the country in this production, not content with singing dancing and acting, Glenn is doing all this on Roller Skates! Obviously a very talented family; Glenn’s sister, Tanya has landed the part of Lisa in the West End musical production of “Mamma Mia”. On the International front, congratulations are in order to Irene and Glenn Robb; their Ch Gleniren Premier League is off on his travels again, now in Finland, at his first show he gained his Finish Ch. title to add to his UK, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and Nordic Titles, at his second show he won the toy group for his new owners Mr J Roosens, Mrs Abeloos-Devos & Mr VToivanen. I have spoken with Ian Dack, he has asked me to thank everyone for all the cards and messages he has received since the death of Rita. The details Rita Dacks funeral are as follows: Wednesday 9th May at 12 noon, Boston Crematorium, Marian Road, Boston PE21 9HA, Friends of Rita are welcome to attend, There are to be no flowers but donations in Rita’s name to, either of Rita’s favourite charities will be welcomed, NSPCC or The Multiple Sclerosis society. If anyone would like the address of these charities, contact me and I can let you have them. |

| Dog World | I was sorry to hear of the loss of two well known papillons recently. Sue Stanbury's Ch Inixia Artful Andrew at the age of 16 and a day or so later his daughter Elizabeth Patrick's Ch. Volpecula Flos Campi aged 13. I remember both in the ring in their prime. Andrew had such a beautiful head - a quality he passed on to his offspring amongst whom were Flos Campi, Ch Inixia Aureole, Ch Serenglade Sreena for Shamal. I am sure both will be sadly missed by their owner breeders. News from Phil Shirley, Secretary of the South Of England Papillon Club "On 21st July at Bradfield the Club will be holding their Fun-Day / Garden Party. This year the event will kick off with the First Ever Licensed Limited Agility Show for Papillons, there are many stars now in Papillon Agility so do come along and cheer them on. The Judging starts at 10.00am, the show will be followed by the various Fun-Day activities: all the usual fun classes: Senior and Junior handling, Baby Puppy walk, Games and Sausage races, There will be a Heelwork to Music demonstration, plenty of stalls for Produce, Plants, Cakes (donations to these stalls will be most welcomed), the Club Stall with many new exciting items, there will be a new stall this year - a Bring and Buy Market Stall, if you have any doggie items : boxes, trolleys, leads, beds etc. that you want to sell then take them along and the club will try to sell them for you for a commission to welfare. Take all your vaccinated baby puppies as this is a great way for them to socialise with others. Free Tea and Coffee will be available all day and a delicious all-in buffet lunch for £5 makes this a great day out. Details of all of this clubs events are available on their website http://www.southpapclub.co.uk ." Sounds like it will be yet another successful day for this club. Congratulations to Michelle and John Osborne on the birth of their latest baby girl called Cerys who weighed in at 8lbs 13.5oz. Mother and baby are I am pleased to report doing well. At the Fermoy Championship Show in Ireland GSB & BOB went to the late Dolly Kavanagh's Denemore Icons Butterfly who went on to take G1, GSD to Dolly's Ch Serenglade Special Design for Denemore, RGSB to Diane Mooney's Conysluck Magic Flute and RGSD to Diane's Omaonaig Grey Swallow. Phalenes were shown in the Any Variety Toy Not Classified class where the winner was Diane Mooney's Aporia Chiassoso. So the Group had a Papillon and Phalene standing side by side. Members of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club will hopefully have seen tucked away on the inside back page of the recently issued Spring Newsletter a notice advising of a SGM to be held to approve the Club's Accounts for the year ended 31.12.2006. Apparently these were not audited in time for the AGM and therefore could not be approved at that meeting. The Club Secretary advises that the reason for this was "Due to the very much earlier date for the AGM, illness, computer crash and the work commitments of the Treasurer and Auditor it proved not possible to complete the accounts and audit on time." The Secretary has asked me to print the following "A reminder that The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club is holding a SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING to approve the Annual Accounts for the year ended 31.12.2006, is to take place after judging has been completed at Bath Championship Show. We ask those members who are exhibiting at the show would they please kindly stay behind for this short meeting. Notice of this meeting can be seen in the Newsletter which you all, hopefully, should have received and in the Members Area of the Club website as well as posted on the Members email list. The agenda and a copy of the accounts will be handed out on the day". I am surprised that it has taken so long for members to be made aware that the accounts could not be approved - the AGM was held on 4 March and it is not until two months later we learn of this - at least some of us do. The committee have in the past promised to ensure that the communication between them and the members regarding Club business is improved and this would seem to indicate that there is still much to do in this respect. I know the committee or some of them get upset when I raise such matters but it does seem to me that either there is a lack of understanding or a lack of care and I hope it is the former. An apology at least would not be amiss. |

We ask those members who are exhibiting at the show, would they please kindly stay behind for this short meeting. As the new Handbook will be printed in time for L.K.A. this year, we regret that no adverts can be accepted after that date”. It was a sad journey we made this week up to Boston, for the funeral of Rita Dack. Several of Rita’s friends, representing the clubs and breeds Rita was attached to, met to support Ian and his family in saying goodbye to Rita, whose sudden death had shocked so many people. I received the following via papnet from Janet Garratt who wrote “I would like to send congratulations to Tiggy Hiscocks & "Amy" (Magic Amethyst Happy Pappy) for getting 1st place in grade 5 Agility at Shrewsbury Agility show, which now takes her up to Grade 6 (Senior). Also well done to Adam her son, for gaining two 2nd places in Grade 2 at the same show with "Rags" (Danica Regal Ragamuffin)” Well done and keep the Agility results and all other results coming in. |

| Our Dogs | Results from Birmingham National, judging the breed for the first time in the UK with CCs was Dr Andreas Schemel, Andreas has judged the breed many, many times overseas at national and international level. He found his principle winners in:Dog CC & BOB Mrs I ROBB Fin & Bel Ch Siljans My Man, Res Dog CC :Mrs J SCOVELL Ch Caswell Classic Tri, Bitch CC : Lt Cdr B D S & Mrs P A COX Ch Wish Upon a Star over Tricianbri Sh.CM, Res Bitch CC : Mrs I & Mr G ROBB Gleniren Juniper Starmaker Sunshoo, Best Puppy :COMRIE, BRYANT & WHITEHILL Amicae Julianna. The BOB now in the ownership of Irene Robb was bred in Sweden by Ulla Hanis , he was the Crufts CC winning dog this year he was also short listed in the Toy group under Mr Terry Thorn at the National. Good news from Alan and Denise Pearch, their “Angel” Jujohn Lonesome Lass went to Folkstone & Hythe Limited show, won AV puppy bitch and went on to take Reserve Best Puppy in Show, they also won AV toy with their Alnessaden Baron Enery Ard Up. They were delighted with this win but a little miffed that the last years winners failed to return the trophies from the previous show. This has been an ongoing problem at many shows for years, no matter how hard a Trophy steward tries to stay on top of things, there are always those that simply just cant be bothered to take the trophies back. Denise Welsh sent in a very nice story about a rescue Papillon who has gone on to great things:” I thought you might like to hear about a rescue Papillon that came to me about two and a half years ago, from Farnham in Surrey. He was a large sable and white dog, had never been on the lead, had never been handled and was terrified of just about everything. An elderly man had bought him for his elderly lady friend who really didn’t want him so he was just left to find his own way. When he arrived at our house he was shaking like a leaf, we put him down in the garden to do his business and have a sniff around but we were unable to catch him again, he was so frightened. Eventually we drove him into the kitchen and started to try and calm him down. I knew that friends of mine were looking for another Papillon and came down to look at him the next day. They decided they would take him on, they called him Smokey, my friend, has spent hours with Smokey, training him in agility, getting him used to life in general, the purpose of this little story is that Smokey is excelling in the Agility world, he won a jumping class in the UKA show in April and also won the Royal Canin Agility class at All About Dogs in Essex in terrible weather, it just goes to show with patience and care a terrified little Papillon can show his true colours, we are waiting now to see if he has qualified for the Royal Canin Final. It has been a pleasure watching Smokey go from a dog that had to be herded into the house to one that will sit and wait and do a fantastic recall over three jumps and fly off around the agility course as if he was born to do it. - Perhaps he was”. Great story Denise, so good to hear of good outcomes to rescue dogs. No more results for this week, there is a busy weekend coming up with SKC and The Papillon (Blutterfly Dog) Club of Scotland Championship shows sharing the same weekend with the Open Show of the South of England Papillon Club, so expect lots of results next week. |
