I was sorry to hear that Peter Rolt had passed away. Peter, for those who did not know him,  was the late Clarice Waud's cousin and companion and anyone who had visited Clarice at Downcourt Cottage will have enjoyed Peter's hospitality. Clarice (Daffodilwoods Papillons) was one of those older members to whom we all owe a great deal,  without her efforts and the efforts of others like her the Breed and the Club would be very much the poorer. Clarice worked very hard for the Breed and for the Club without thought of reward for her efforts and Peter was always a great support and help to her so in his own way he too has contributed much. Last year I reported that he had reached his 100th birthday and that he still resided at Downcourt Cottage. Although he had had one or two spells of poor health he remained at Downcourt up until last month when he went into a nursing home. He reached the grand age of 101 years and seven months and had kept a papillon or two for many of those years,  his last remaining papillon  has now gone to live with Alan Pearch. The funeral took place on Friday 24 November at the Guildford Crematorium and at the request of the family was a private ceremony.

Three of the Breed Club's held Open Shows over the last weekend 25/26 November. The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club reports "On the 25th November the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club held their second open show of the year at the Sports Connexion, Coventry.  The judge was Anne Stevens (Tawzan) who chose as her principle winners: .... BIS: Deamer and Davidson-Poston's Bankshill Isle of Lewis ShCM;  BOS: Christea Midnight Rose for Skyvana; RBIS Olding and Munroe's Kirchase Loved Regardless by Papplewick;  BPIS: Skyvana Apparition of Shadowknight . The day started with mince pies and `nibbles` being available for exhibitors as they arrived.  There were numerous stalls selling items ranging from home made cards by Rebecca Thompson to Native American items from Sophie Langdon.  Other stalls included the Fish 4 Dogs, the Club Stall with a new range of lovely new items for presents etc. and the Welfare stall.  In all they made a very colourful display.  Deborah Gornall was also available to micro chip dogs if required. As the Sports Connextion does not have a lift and the hot meals were upstairs, Doug Colyer provided an excellent `waiter service` by bringing meals to those who found the stairs difficult or impossible. There were also light snacks and hot drinks available in the cricket hall for those who did not want a hot meal. It was lovely to see that so many people entered this show for without your support there would be no shows. Thank you all for helping to make this such an enjoyable day. The next event will be the Christmas Cracker Day on the 3rd December, which, will again be held at Southam."

The Papillon Club of Scotland Open Show was also held on 25 November and here BIS went to Terry & Nigel Thurman's Lysandra's Zxar,  BOS to Ruth Johnston's Tutyak Gina G At Dourhu,  RBIS Mary Whitehill's Frasermar Jack Frost and BPIS Mark Whitehill's Frasermar Lost For Words At Martika. Finally on 26 November at the South of England Papillon Club Open Show BIS went to Brian and Pat Cox's  Wish Upon A Star Over Tricianbri, BOS to Sue Stanbury & Margaret Unwin’s Inixia Dreams Magic, RBIS to Kirsty Miller's

Feorlig Midnight In Georgia and BPIS to Sue Stanbury's Panspayon Steppin Out With Inixia.  Congratulations to all the winners and particularly to Terry and Nigel who have indeed been having a good run with Lysandra's Zxar having the weekend previously taken BOB and BIS at the North East of England Toy Dog Open Show. Full results for all three shows are available on the respective Club's web sites

Phil Shirley will be away on a long trip from the 2nd December for several months.Anne Borg will be dealing with all secretarial business for the South of England Papillon Club until further notice please contact Anne on : 01865 762201 or anneborg@tiscali.co.uk

I was sorry to hear the news from Alan Pearch that Peter Rolt had died. Peter reached the grand age of 101. He was the cousin of Clarice Waud (Daffodilwoods). Alan and Denise had been looking after Peters last Papillon since he had to go into a nursing home recently, of course they will continue to do so. Peters funeral will be a private affair at Guildford Crematorium on Friday 24th November.

News from Eilish Neally in Ireland with the results from Cloghran Championship show. Judge Mr J Walsh :GSD & BOB - Ir Ch Austrene Copper Glow, RGSD - Conysluck Hal O The Wynd, GSB - Conysluck Sunshadow, RGSB - Conysluck Megalava. Eilish also kindly sent details of all the Irish show dates for 2007 including the Munster Circuit shows which kick off with Clonmel & DCC International Show on the 19th August then Killarney on the 21st followed by Limerick on the 23rd and ending with Tralee on the 25th. It really is great fun and anyone wanting an enjoyable break with dog shows thrown in should consider going over to Ireland for this, remember you must first register your dogs with the IKC.

Rosemary Hobson continues her winning streak with her Phimeen Benjamin Bunny at Rosenjon taking best puppy and Puppy Group 3 at Blackburn and Dist. Open show, Rosemay had 3 firsts at the show and BOB was Sharon Burns Begaville New Addition at Bankshill which went on to Group 2.Many congratulations.

An exciting day for Terry & Nigel Thurman of Lysandra Papillons at North East of England Toy Dog Open Show they took a clean sweep with 4 firsts with 4 dogs: LYSANDRA'S PTOL-ANKH-ESH, L. YHARROW, L ZXANNA & L.ZXAR. LYSANDRA ZXAR took BOB and went on to Best in Show, well done to Terry and Nigel who must have been over the moon with the success of their dogs.

The Crufts schedule arrived this week and it looks like we shall have a good position for our ring in hall 5, over in the corner near where the main ring used to be, close to the canteen and the toilets. It looks like only toy dogs will be in hall 5 although half the hall seems to be taken up with retail outlets. It certainly will be nice to have more room as last year I thought it was extremely crowded especially trying to pass through from one hall to the next.

From Denise Welsh came the news of the first “Papillon only” class that was held in conjunction with the C-side Agility Club show. There were 11 entries; the course was agility with some tricky angles and a nasty pull through. Six Papillons were placed with the other five being eliminated, the results are as follows: - 1st Alison Grimes with Nat (34.09), 2nd Barbara Pointer with Daisy (34.61), 3rd Kim Jenner with Sam (36.49), 4th Angie Tydeman with Tio (40.55), 5th Kim Jenner with Meg (47.89), 6th Denise Welsh with Angel (55.91), congratulations to all that keep the flag flying in Agility with Papillons.

Denise Pearch has had a nasty fall, which resulted in a broken leg, Im sure we all wish Denise well and hope she is soon on the mend.

I am off on a long holiday from the 2nd Dec so next week will be the last notes from me for quite some time. Anne Borg has very kindly offered to carry on with the notes and anyone with results or news they would like printed should contact Anne on 01865 762201 or Anneborg@tiscali.co.uk . Anne is the Assistant Secretary of the South of England Papillon Club; she will also be dealing with all the secretarial duties for the club in my absence.

I had a nice chat with Sue Jones this week, Sue sounded in good spirits although she tells me her eyesight is still not much improved since having laser treatment. Our Dogs

I’m writing these Notes a week before Christmas, but I think by the time they go into print the appropriate greeting will be Happy New Year, and may you have health, happiness and success in 2007.  Not a very realistic wish, as we can’t ALL have success, but we can all improve our stock, with care and forethought, and as long as we can all put something better into the ring than we have produced before, then we are on the Right Lines!  And I often think, when I see dogs awarded 3rd and VHC in the classes, there is often a very fine line dividing the awards, so we should not be discouraged by failure to win Firsts.

The South of England Papillon Club held its third Christmas Party and Match on Saturday.  Seventy members enjoyed Ian and Janet Chandler’s excellent (as always) Christmas Lunch - Turkey, Christmas Pud, Mince Pies and Brandy Butter - and, fortified with all this and a few glasses of wine, took part in the Baby Puppy Parade (13 baby puppies - a cheering prospect for the breed next year, as the standard appeared excellent and all the babies enjoyed their parade), then the Puppy Match and Adult Match.  Junior Handlers were out in force.  Erin Boal judged the matches and coped with the baby puppies excellently, and Keith Langdon judged the juniors, who all went away with the usual goody-bag. Santa (accompanied by the Snow Fairy) visited, giving presents to all and chews  for the dogs, and the day ended with the Fancy Dress competition, judged by our President, Pearl Peacock.  We took a few moments out to congratulate Hazel Fairall (Wingars) (trying not to embarrass her!) on reaching the vintage age of 87 that very day. We are happy to see a lot of juniors coming along, but it is also good to have members at the other end of the scale to give a club balance.  To mark the occasion the Club gave her a little present, and Wendy Hill appeared with a very nice cake (not with 87 candles, I’m glad to say).

Rosemary Hobson (Rosenjon) had a brilliant day at the Westmorland Limited Show, where Phimeen Benjamin Bunny of Rosenjon won not only BPIB but BP in Show. On top of this, her grandson, Josh, won BOB with  Rosenjon Bobby Dazzler: so both flew home to celebrate.  Congratulations to them and the dogs: it’s certainly not Benjamin Bunny’s first success, and by the look of it won’t be his last.

Please keep the news coming in.  We’re now looking forward to the new Boston Championship Show in January, with CCs for Paps - a new addition to the calendar.

Happy New Year to all!
