Given the lovely weather we are enjoying it is hard to believe the clocks go back this weekend (as I write these notes) and were it not for the fact that the show scene is starting to quieten down we might think we were still in late summer. Results from just one show for this week's notes, at the Portadown and DCC Show in Ireland GSB and BOB went to Mrs Killeen King's Ringlands Maybe Baby at Sanjuper for Dolcissimo, GSD to Diane Mooney's Omaonaig Grey Swallow, RGSD to Sue Belshaw's Belvisaj Simply Charming and RGSB to Diane's Conysluck Magic Flute

A correction to previous notes, at the S Wales Papillon Club Championship Show BIS went to the Dog, Sue Morrell and Thesbina Teague's Temelora Wallace and not as printed to the bitch, Amy Mason's Amicae Spirit At Amsema.

Phil Shirley, Secretary of the South Of England Papillon Club sends the following report of the Club's recent Education Day. "The South of England Papillon Club recently held its Papillon Education Day at New Haw. Anne Borg organises this event and is to be congratulated on its success. The event was well supported by 50 members, the morning event saw Mr Steve Dean presenting Mating, Miracles and Magic, this thorough (yet amusing at times) talk on the joys and heartache of breeding was extremely well received and I recommend anyone who has never been to one of Mr Deans talks on this subject to go, there is always something to learn no matter how long you have been breeding. After a super lunch with many choices of main course and dessert, provided by Rita Dack , Anne Borg and the catering team. We were given an introduction to Agility in toy dogs, by Denise and Alex Welsh with the aid of slides and demonstrations and of course the (multi retired) Harley the Magnificent, who obviously just loves the agility course and will never really retire. The day ended with the usual cream tea and scones, sending everyone happily on their way. During the lunch break there was a small floral presentation to club member Eileen Clayton, never one to brag in any form, we managed to find out Eileen had been mentioned in the Queens birthday honours and in fact has been Honoured with the MBE. The award is for her services to the Ffestiniog Railway, which is a not-for-profit heritage railway relying on a large volunteer workforce to supplement the work of its paid staff.  The core reason for the award is because Eileen has encouraged kids to come to work on the railway, providing them with opportunities to work with good supervision and support, at times without their parents.  As a result of doing this for over 20 years, the average age of the volunteers has fallen from somewhere around 50 to around 30.  Most restored railways have a fairly geriatric workforce, so their turn-around has made them the envy of the heritage railway in this respect. Congratulations to Eileen, I was not sure whether to bow when presenting her but she told me not to as she is abysmal at curtsying!" I am sure we would all wish to extend our congratulations to Eileen. I know from having attended my sisters investiture that Eileen will have a wonderful time at the Palace.

Members of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club will recall that in 2002 the Club's Newsletter won second place in the Dog World's first competition for Breed Club Newsletters. The Club again entered the newsletter in this year's competition, I believe the second time it has been run, and this time the newsletter won joint First Place. A presentation will be made in the ring at Midland Counties to the Newsletter Editor Carolyne Allward Chebsey. Many congratulations to Carolyne for this accolade.

The following announcement was made on Papnet by the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club President, Bubbles Wood Davis "As you will all remember Roger Banfield felt unable to continue as Chairman of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club due to personal reasons. We were obviously very sorry to loose him. Under rule 8 of Club Rules the Committee is empowered to co-opt further Committee Members if they feel necessary. This was discussed at the Committee Meeting on Sunday and it was agreed to invite Roger back to join as Acting Chairman until the AGM. I am very pleased to say that Roger has accepted our invitation and I hope you will all join us in welcoming him back." I am sure many of us will be pleased to hear this, Roger's calm and sensible guidance has been clearly missed since he sadly had to step down earlier this year.

The Papillon Club of Scotland held their Ch. Show last week, the Judge was Mr A Wight and he found his principle winners in: BITCH CC & BIS Mrs. I & Mr. G Robb Ch. GLENIREN STARLIGHT KISSES, RBCC Mrs. M. Whitehill AMICAE STARTIME, DOG CC / RBIS Mrs. I & Mr. G Robb & Mr D & Mrs C Roe Dk/Nor. Ch. GLENIREN PREMIER LEAGUE SUNSHOO, RDCC Dr. N. & Mrs T Thurman LYSANDRA'S ZXAR, BPIS Mrs S  Stanbury PANSPAYON STEPIN OUT WITH INIXIA, Best Junior Handler: Miss A. Mason. A great result for the team Gleniren/Sunshoo taking both CCs and also for PREMIER LEAGUE as this was his third, he becomes the breeds latest champion and he now adds his UK Ch. Title to his Danish and Norwegian titles. Many congratulations.

Ted Whitehill and the committee must have had a terrible time, with less than 48 hours to go to the show they were informed due to a major electrical problem the scheduled venue had been closed on Health and Safety grounds. Luckily they were offered an alternative venue in Falkirk, which was only about 5 miles or so from the scheduled venue. They then had to try to contact all the exhibitors to let them know of the change of venue. I hear everything went well and there was a most enjoyable show.

AtAshford, Faversham & District Canine Society Open show David Wenham and Aubrey Malbons, Danginifee Gypsy Gold was BOB and went on to Toy Group 2.

At Portsmouth and Southsea Open show,Brian and Pat Cox’s  bitch Wish Upon A Star Over Tricianbri went BOB and Group 3 and Carol and Martin Wilsons puppy Erinsjoy Copacabana went BP and Puppy group 3.

Sue Morrell and Thes Teague went to Oxfordshire & Thame Premier Open show with the intention of trying to qualify their young Junior Warrant winners Temelora Just Magic JW (Jason) and T. Storm Petrel JW (Storm) for the Kennel Gazette Junior Warrant Winner of the Year semi-finals competition that takes place at Discover Dogs in November. They actually had a terrific day in that one of their puppies won BP, Storm was RBOB and Jason won BOB and then went on to Best in Show.  Following on from this, Jason then qualified for the Kennel Gazette Junior Warrant Semi-finals and Storm was runner up. They arrived home very late and a couple of days later they were at it again at Stafford Open Show Jason went BOB and took the toy group again and their new little puppy also gained his second BP and earned himself Puppy group 4, well done to all the winners this week.

I am delighted to say the Kennel Club has granted Championship status to the South of England Papillon Club for 2009.

The Chairman of the Club, Mrs Pearl Peacock has asked me to relay the following: “I would like to say how thrilled I am to hear, the South of England Papillon Club has been granted Championship Status. In the few years since the club was founded it has continued to promote the breed in every way possible, this recognition from the Kennel Club proves what a hard working committee along with a very loyal membership can achieve. The members in particular must be thanked for their continued support of the club and its various functions. It is very good news for the breed, that Papillons will gain an extra set of Challenge Certificates from 2009 and this will bring the club inline with the other four breed clubs. My thanks again to the Committee past and present, the excellent work of the Secretary and to the Membership, my sincere thanks for your support”.

At Midland Counties Dog CC and BOB went to Pat Munn's Ringlands Treasures Story I believe this is his second CC. Bitch CC went to Brian and Pat Cox's  Wish Upon A Star Over Tricianbri also her second CC. Reserves went to Mrs Lees' Ch Bodebi Ray Of Success At Lafford in dogs and in bitches to Anne MacGregor's Pyatshaw Silver Tassie. BP was J Magri's Frasermar Fairy Tale Of Rozamie.

Three more judges announced for next year Bath - Mrs A Richardson; Paignton - Mrs S Sadler; Richmond - Mr J Ness.

Sue Stanbury is working on the S Wales Papillon Club Year Book and writes "I am still in the process of chasing around for photographs and information on pedigrees of all those Papillons that were lucky enough to have won CC's, BOB's, Group placings, BPIB, BVIB, BIS, RBIS,BPIS & BVIS at all the Championship and Breed Shows in 2005, from Crufts 2005 to Manchester 2006. For those of you who do not know what I am talking about, South Wales Papillon Club compiles year books with a three generation pedigree and photo of the above mentioned dogs. I am, as usual late in doing so, as I want to add photos of all the dogs. It makes it far more interesting. For those of you who have not sent me a photo, it is absolutely free to add your winning dog's picture, but I have just had an idea and that is, as I am late and will have to start chasing people up, I have decided that, for those people that have been lucky to have more than one win with their particular dog, they can have the opportunity of putting in a head study, at a cost of £10.00. I for one have far better photo's of head studies as my dogs have been out of coat for most of the year!.  I shall soon be posting a list of the photo's that I need. In the meantime do feel free to send me copies of your dog, if you know you have won and not done so! Can I also add that, although I have yet to start on the 2006, I would appreciate it, if you could start sending me photographs and pedigrees (in case I do not already have them, or if I do and they are incorrect) For those of you who may be interested, If and when they are finished they will be available for sale, as are our previous additions,"

So if you have won such an award please do get in touch with Sue and provide the required photo/information etc. These books are a valuable resource and will be more so in the years to come for future breeders.

The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club sends the following information: "The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club is having a Breed Seminar  at Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk on Saturday 10th February 2007. The seminar will be run as 2 separate sections. Section 1: This is for experienced B list judges aspiring to go onto the A3 list. The KC has said… Those who have completed a breed seminar have a right to be seriously considered for the Club's lists (especially if they have taken part in an assessment). If they should not be accepted, it would be helpful for them to have the reasons given. For this reason, after discussions with Dorothy McIntyre of the Kennel Club, the intention is make the seminar procedures as transparent as can be done, and to fit into the KC requirement that …a seminar should be seen as being part of the education process …. All persons interested in this section, or the following Section, should register their interest with the organiser on behalf of The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club, Douglas Colyer, Deepfield, Sudbourne Woodbridge Suffolk IP12 2BE or by email douglas@shirando.co.uk quoting the relevant Section  . The KC has said … clubs may wish to limit the places available because it is essential that those attending do not leave feeling that the day was wasted. Therefore this section will be limited to 15 persons. The cost will be £15 per person and will include food and refreshments. There will be three assessors. They will be led by Rosalie Brady, and include Roger Chaston and Carolyne Allward- Chebsey. The KC have said that …A key assessment topic must always be the candidate's ability to place dogs in an order that would have the general agreement of the experts…..Candidates with good valid reasons for perging from the consensus view, should be given the opportunity to discuss and justify their views.

Section 2 - This is for prospective judges with an interest in the breed and who are considering working to go onto the B list, or just gain further education on the breed. It will follow a similar pattern as for Section 1 but there will be no compulsory assessment or test paper, and all participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance.  Again the numbers will be limited to 15 persons and the cost £15. The lead for this Section is Steven Bardwell.

All applicants for these two sections will receive full details of what will be expected of them, the proposed multiple choice question paper and the proposed critique procedure that will follow an objective setup kindly provided by Dorothy McIntyre."

At the Bull Breeds general championship show in Ireland DGS and BOB went to Marion Sloan's Ch Austerene I'm Electric, GSB to Sue Belshaw's Belvisaj I Have A Dream and RGSD to Diane Mooney's Omaonaig Grey Swallow. It seems there was some problem over the award for RGSB as apparently both first and second placed puppies were in the ring and the judge awarded the Reserve to the second in puppy over the bitch she had earlier placed first in the class. No doubt the IKC will have to sort this out.

Sue Allen is the new, newsletter editor for the South Wales Papillon Club, Sue is looking for news, articles etc. for the Christmas edition, if you have something of interest for Sue, please e-mail her @ tanglethyme@btinternet.com

Jean Banfield sent a mail from the executive lounge at Heathrow airport, where she and Roger were waiting for their flight to Australia, both Jean and Roger have been invited to judge while out there, it will be interesting to hear of their experience when they arrive home at the end of the month, Roger thanks everyone for welcoming him back to the position of acting Chairman of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog ) Club.

Mr T Nethercott judged one of the largest general championship breed entries this year at Midland Counties, he found his principle winners in:DCC and BOB, RINGLANDS TREASURES STORY (MRS P E MUNN) , RDCC: CH BODEBI RAY OF SUCCESS TO LAFFORD (MRS C P LEES), BCC:WISH UPON A STAR OVER TRICIANBRI (LT. CDR. B D S & MRS P A COX) , RBCC: PYATSHAW SILVER TASSIE (MRS A MACGREGOR), BP: FRASERMAR FAIRY TAIL OF ROZAMIE (MR J A MAGRI). Congratulations to all the winners. Irene Robb sent a message to say someone left a pair of glasses on her trolley at Midland Counties, if they were yours please contact Irene.

A little news for you Agility buffs: C-side agility club are holding a show at Golden Cross, the Papillon Agility League are sponsoring a class solely for Papillons who are members of the league (PAL). On the 10th December “Just Minis will be holding their annual agility show at Golden Cross, there will be a class purely for P.A.L. members and then a presentation to the highest placed Papillons that have gained the most points throughout the year. There are classes for, Starters, Novice, Senior and Advanced Papillons, the competition will be very hot. Remember to let Denise have all your agility results as the competition year is coming to a close.

Sue Stanbury is compiling information for the South Wales Papillon Club year book, Sue needs results, photos and pedigrees from any dog that won CCs, RCCs, Group placings, BPs, B. Vets, BIS, RBIS, BPIS and BVIS at championship shows between and including, Crufts 2005 and Manchester 2006. The book will be a valuable record for those that like to study results and pedigrees; it will be sold by the club once complete.

Diane Mooney sent the results from the Bull Breeds Ch. Show over in Ireland

DGS and BOB Sloans, Ch Austerene IM Electric, RDGS Mooneys, Omaonaig Grey Swallow, BGS Belshaws , Belvisaj I Have a Dream. Diane says “there is some confusion over the RBGS: The steward allowed the First and Second in Puppy to challenge for the BGS, The  judge then awarded RBGS to the second placed puppy although the class winner was standing next to her, when this was pointed out to the judge she said she couldn’t possibly be expected to remember her placings in such a big entry, There were  ten bitches and eight dogs present in total over six classes! Of course only unbeaten bitches should have been in the challenge, but one would hope a judge wouldn’t reverse in a matter of ten minutes her first placing! Although the Reserve has no value it still should be taken seriously or why award it at all?

This will now go to the IKC and I expect there will be no RBGS declared for this show”

“However it doesn’t affect the major placings, well done to Sue and Marion” Diane continues “next year the system changes and it will take seven Green Stars under seven different judges to make an Irish Champion, no Index is to be used, what value if any, they will put on Green Stars won under the present system which our young dogs have won this year, we do not yet know”

Doug Colyer is organising a breed seminar for the Papillon (Butterfly Dog ) Club, it will be held  at Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk on Saturday 10th February 2007. The seminar will be run as 2 separate sections.

Section one is for B List judges that wish to progress to the A3 list, this will require assessment. Section two is for prospective judges with an interest in the breed and who are considering working to go onto the B list, or just gain further education on the breed, there will be no compulsory assessment or test paper, and all participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance. Both sections are limited to 15 persons and the charge will be £15 per head to include food and refreshments, early reservation is recommended, contact Douglas Colyer, Deepfield, Sudbourne, Woodbridge, Suffolk IIP12 2BE or by email douglas@shirando.co.uk.

Ted Whitehill, Secretary of the Papillon Breed Council sent this news; “the summary of the last breed council meeting can be found on the Breed Council Website”:

www.papbreedcouncil.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/  . It is an informative site, which not only lists Breed Council business, it has the Judges lists and criteria and the planned events for all the Papillon Clubs. One or two items you may be interested in:

The Secretary of the Breed council had again written to the Kennel Club asking if they would consider two judges for the Breed at Crufts. Their response was as follows: The Committee is always reviewing whether a breed needs 1 or 2 judges but based on entry and absentees for the past three years they feel there is currently no need for two judges. Please be assured this is constantly under review. Kennel Club Accredited Breeder Scheme: In response to feedback from the Breed Council the Kennel Club have now include the recommendation that Papillon Breeders who are members of the scheme check for Patella Luxation and PRA. Under discussion at the moment is the standardisation of registered colours for the breed, Clubs are to discuss this at committee and the results will be returned to Breed council where a  proposal will be put to memberships to agree the way forward.

The next meeting and AGM of the Breed Council will be Sunday 4th February 2007. at  Finningley Village Hall

Following on from my notes  regarding the TV companies that needed some Papillons to help with their programmes, I have this from Carol Wilson who took her dogs to take part in “Make me a Super Model” Carol says: “Thank you to all who sent their good wishes for us for Friday.  Thanks also to all who watched the programme – although I haven’t yet seen it, I know it is absolute drivel and the only thing worth watching was the dogs – for all of the few seconds they were on!  We had a lovely day and the dogs thoroughly enjoyed themselves.  The female models were fine and spent time getting to know the dogs.  The males were a different story – totally self-centred and disinterested in the dogs.  Brandy and Taz were the ones being carried by the girls.  Taz looked terrified but don’t worry, he always looks like that!  Harvey and Pandora were the ones walked by the males.  Pandora is such a diva, she loved walking down that catwalk and being the centre of attention.  All the dogs loved getting fussed over and really enjoyed themselves.” I must say I watched the programme for 2 hours and it really was mind numbingly boring, the best part was seeing Carols dogs which appeared for a few minutes at the end.

A message from Anne Borg tells me the bookings for the Xmas Lunch / Match, of the South of England Papillon Club are coming in fast and furious, this event is limited in numbers and if you have not reserved your place yet then in order to avoid disappointment do so quickly with Anne on 01865 762201.

Rosemary Hobson phoned recently and was very excited that her new puppy: Phimeen Benjamin Bunny of Rosenjon at just 6 months and two days old went BP and eventually Reserve Best Puppy in Show at Blackpool Toy Dog Open Show, Rosemary’s Rosenjon Coco Channel also took her last point for her Junior Warrant Title, many congratulations.

Rosalie Brady (Bordercot) mailed me to say she has moved, her new address is: Thirn Grange, Thirn, RIPON, North Yorkshire, HG4 4AU. Tel/Fax: 01677 460013,  Email as before r.brady@bordercot.co.uk

Sue Morrell sent the following, Sue has taken on the task of the possible amalgamation of Papillon Rescue / Welfare, Sue writes: “At a recent meeting of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club it was agreed to to take up the original proposal of the South of England Papillon Club, for Welfare / Rescue sections of the various clubs to join together in one central organisation. To this end we are in the process of contacting the other Clubs to invite them into joining with us in this venture. Rather than each of the five Clubs undertaking the rescuing / re-homing of Papillons within just their own areas, it would mean more continuity in the re-homing of each dog particularly in the cases where dogs may come from one particular area but the home most suited to them may be in another.  It is hoped that the various Clubs could then work more closely together towards the common goal of doing the very best for each dog that comes into a rescue / re-homing situation”

“Obviously, some of the Clubs may not wish to join the scheme because they already have a perfectly good rescue / re-homing organisation already in operation, or due to their location in relation to other parts of the country.  But at the end of the day, we will hopefully all work together in one way or another to the benefit of our wonderful little breed”.

I wish Sue well in this task and hope a suitable agreement and common set of guidelines can be incorporated, with all the clubs raising funds through various means, and with the help of the many people involved and those willing to do so, in Rescue, this venture could become very successful.

Great news and many congratulations to Sophie Langdon, her young Puppy: Skyvana Apparition of Shadowknight took Best Puppy at Coventry and this gave him his final point for his Junior Warrant Title, I know Sophie will be very pleased with this as “Munchie” is the first home bred dog she has done well with, I believe Munchie is only ten months old, so his future looks very good.

I was reading somewhere that the KC is thinking of removing the JW title as a Stud Book qualification, I really wonder what they are thinking sometimes. The effort required to gain this title in a breed like ours with large entries is considerable and I think the Stud Book recognition is very valid, more so when you consider that you automatically take a Stud book number by being placed 3rd in an Open class of 3 dogs at a Championship show, hardly recognition comparable to the points required for the Junior Warrant I would say. Hopefully this is just one of the KCs thoughts that never come to fruition.

There is a new Internet Chat List for members of the Papillon “Butterfly Dog” Club

“ Clubpapchat” a link to joining this is on the club website. One topic that has been suggested is a Juniors day, incorporating handling, a breed talk etc. I think this could be great for the Juniors, although from what I see of most of our Juniors handling skills, they are the ones that should be teaching some of us. I particularly enjoy watching the ones that don’t “over-show” their dogs, the natural approach always looks better. I do hope something comes of this idea as I think there is something for everyone to learn in handling skills. As styles change, I just hope we never go down the line of this very “professional” style of handling that makes the dog look like a statue and scared stiff to move, not something that lends itself to our breed, “lively and alert” being in my opinion two of the important virtues of the breed.

For anyone interested in pedigrees, Nicholas Forbes from Seattle has created the The Global Papillon Pedigrees Organization  at http://www.papillonpedigrees.org this is a tremendous site and currently has over 45.000 Papillons in the data base, with over 1000  pictures, it is free to use although I think a small contribution to the running costs is valid as this really saves a huge amount of work for anyone searching for records. Nicholas is asking for anyone to send in their details to be included, you can also just key in your own Affix (oops we are not supposed to call them that anymore) and you will find all records relating to your dogs, if you find any errors you just send a mail and the are corrected almost immediately.

At the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club Championship Show Sean Carroll judged the dogs and George Baxter the bitches. Dog CC and BIS went to Pat Munn's Ringlands Treasure Story and this being his third CC gives him his title subject to KC confirmation. Bitch CC went to Irene and Glenn Robb's Ch Gleniren Starlight Kisses, Reserves went to Jenny Scovell's  Ch Caswell Classic Tri in dogs and Estelle Kirk's Kirkchase Razzle Dazzle in bitches. BP went to Mark Whitehill's Frasermar Lost for Words at Martika

Anne Stevens (Tawzan) has draw a very nice entry for the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club  Open Show to be held on 25 November of 155 dogs making 179 entries not including the 20 entries in the Benevolent/Welfare Classes or the 6 entries for JH classes for Miss Kirsty Miller. The Club would be grateful if anyone would like to donate prizes for the Raffle and if so would tae these along to the show

I was sorry to hear that Denise Welsh had lost Harlie at the age of 12 years old. Harlie or to give her her proper name Jadedoran Paris but known to us all as Harlie the Magnificent was an outstanding Agility Dog whose successes are simply to any to recall here. Those with access to the Internet can see some details of her successes on the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's web site under Agility. So active was Harlie that just four weeks ago she was displaying her outstanding talents at the South of England Papillon Club Education Day.  I know she will be a great loss to Denise
