| Dog World | I am afraid the Breed Notes have been a little erratic over the last week or so as both Deirdre and I have been very busy as can be imagined with the completion of the Complete Illustrated Standards of the Papillon and Phalene. Printing is now well under way and by the time these notes are out the Book will be completed and the official launch will take place at the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club Championship Show as the committee have been extremely kind in allowing us to have a stall there for this purpose. Having seen a good few examples of the finished pages etc I must say I am over whelmed at the quality of the printing and the whole production, seeing these has really brought it to life. Talking of the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club, congratulations are in order to the Secretary John Edison and to Jennifer on their marriage which took place on 16 October. We all wish them both every happiness for the future At Driffield Dog CC and BOB went to Int Ch Queen Bless JP Red Ideal owned by Mr K Hayashi, his first here in the UK, Bitch CC was Jo Davidson Poston's Ibstock Tululah for Spinillons, Reserve Dog CC Lynda Woodrow's Lynflyer Harry Zona and Reserve Bitch CC Pauline Wilson's Invergarick Modern Milly. BP went to Sue Stanbury's Inixia Troysdale Time To Dream. Red Ideal was short listed in the Group. Deborah Gornall and Clare Butler had a good day at the Preston & DCS Open Show taking BOB with Tinklebury Dr.No, and BPIB with Tinklebury Wild Wendy who went on to take BPIG. Pearl Peacock was kind enough to telephone me with some news regarding the South Of England Papillon Club's recent Education day, usually the Club Secretary Phil Shirley always gives me a good account of the Club's events but I understand he is off enjoying himself on holiday for 6 weeks. There were almost 40 people present at the Education day and Pearl tells me folk thoroughly enjoyed the talk by the Vet Steve Dean on worms and especially his talk in Canine Herpes. I understand there is a vaccine either in course of preparation or possibly available for this which will be of great interest as it has been a source of some worry. Pearl tells me the Club put together some very useful and Educational literature on these topics for folk attending and perhaps it may be possible for this to be reproduced and made available for those who were not able to attend as I am sure everyone will find in it of interest. As well as the talk by Steve Dean, Caroline Lee Farnsworth gave a very enjoyable talk on grooming and show preparation and I am sure many picked up a good few pointers from Caroline. All in all it seems to have been yet another very successful event for this Club. It is really good to see Club's putting these sort of events on, as welcome as seminars are on breed type etc we don't often see clubs putting on educational events covering health issues. This Club have indeed been very forward thinking and are to be congratulated on their efforts. Lest anyone think I only give details of this Club's events I would mention that I am happy to promote any Club's events etc but can only do so if I am given the information. |

| Dog World | At Midland Counties it was a first CC and BOB for Kay Stewart's Tussalud Cruella De Ville, the judge Carolyne Allward Chebsey who was awarding CC's for the first time in the breed had in fact placed her highly previously making her BIS at the Papillon Club Open Show a couple of years ago. Dog CC, his second in successive shows, went to Int Ch Queen Bless JP Red Ideal owned by Mr K Hayashi. Reserves went to Mrs Stevens Tawzan Fun and Fancy Free in dogs and in bitches to Irene and Glenn Robb's Ch Gleniren Starlight Kisses. BP went to Elizabeth Patrick's Frasermar Snowbird Volpecula. At the All Ireland Bull Breeds BOB & GSD went to Dolly Kavanagh's Ir, Dan, Swed Ch Serenglade Gold Sovereign, RGSD to Diane Mooney's Omani Fire Bird, GSB to Connie Letch's Conysluck Polar Star and RGSB to Diane's Omaonaig Fairy Footsteps. Mark and I were delighted to hear from Sharon Mahoney in Australia that Nouveau My Delight had taken her title, her last CC coming with 25 points, BOB and the Toy Group. Sharon had had a litter from her before starting to campaign her and she has not been in the ring for that long gaining her title reasonably quickly. She is litter sister to Am & Brz Ch Nouveau Texas Lady and Nouveau Less Is More Entries are now being taken for the Internet Dog Show being run by the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club full details available on the web site at http://www.papillonclub.co.uk Not much news around at the moment so if anyone hass any for the notes please send it on to me. |
| Our Dogs | Sue Jones continues to make good progress, I’m glad to say - though she complains that it is a bit slow. I’m helping out with the Breed Notes until she recovers sufficiently, or until Phil Shirley returns from holiday - whichever is the sooner - and I would be very grateful to be sent any news which you would like reported. Congratulations to Debbie Gornall on her across-the-board wins at Preston D.C. on 23 October: she took BOB with Tinklebury Dr No, and BPIB with Tinklebury Wild Wendy, who then went on to take Best Puppy in the Toy Group - very pleasing. Congratulations also to Michelle Osborne (Tykkydewas) and her husband on a different production - a second daughter, Bethany Mary, sister for Sian. Sian, at 18 months, is already a veteran attender of Dog Shows, and, keeping up the family tradition, Bethany attended the South of England P.C.’s Education Day only 3 weeks after entering the world, where she behaved impeccably - and Michelle was quite good too. The South of England Papillon Club’s Education Day on 23 October went very well, attended by about 40 people. Steve Dean (vet, and writer of Dog World’s ‘A Vet’s View’) was a joy to listen to - he is as good a speaker as he is a writer: informative, quick, decisive, all the facts at his fingertips, and with relaxing touches of humour (even on the subject of horrible Ticks, Fleas and Worms). We learnt a lot about worms and other parasites (Home and Abroad) and were glad Spaghetti was not on the menu for lunch. Steve then spoke on Canine Herpes Virus, which does seem to be a quite widely experienced problem at the moment, and we were very grateful for the chance to hear facts and possible remedies: this was followed by questions and good discussion - from which we had to drag him away to give him lunch! After lunch, Caroline Lee-Farnsworth gave a very clear and detailed talk on ‘Grooming the Papillon’ (with a very patient model in Graycaz Take the Michael), which was very useful and well received. The event closed in the traditional way with a Cream Tea. The best news of all, which has perhaps not reached everyone, is that John Edson, well-known Secretary of the Northern & Eastern Pap Club, and Jennifer Marshall (Novastar) ‘tied the knot’ on 16 October, in thousand-year-old Ryther Church. I hope their papillons made up a guard of honour, with swords crossed, as the couple emerged from the church - and wait for the gifted Carole Hatch to commemorate the event with a suitable animation! Don’t forget to contact Ann Richardson if you want to camp overnight (5 Nov.) before the Northern & Eastern Pap Club Ch. Show on Sunday - arrangements have to be made for entry to the grounds. News and items, please, to me for the time being |

| Dog World | At the Ulster Yorkshire Terrier all Toy Breeds Show in Ireland, Marian Sloan's Ch & Irish Ch Sunshoo Imamovie Premier took Best in Show, an exciting result for Marion as Maxine Moth (as Imamovie Premier is known) is 8 1/2 years old. Sharon Mahoney tells me of some exciting results at the Papillon Club of Victoria Championship Show.I believe the judge was from the USA and she ended up giving Bitch CC & BIS, Dog CC & RUBIS (from Puppy class), Res CC bitch, Junior Dog class, Minor dog and bitch class all to offspring of UK Import Aus Ch Powdermill Touch of Magic. Brian, as he has known, has proven himself to be an outstanding sire and has produced already a considerable number of dogs that have gained their titles and there are a few more waiting in the wings. He was sired by Shirando Chocolate Soldier out of Nouveau Gypsy Lass and was bred and exported by Ruth and Ann Weston, I believe the first papillon exported by them so his success must be even more pleasing. Pleasing also for Mark and I as of course he is bred almost entirely from Nouveau lines and is line bred to our dear old Nouveau Envoy. Interestingly Envoy was the same breeding by a later mating to another dog exported to Sharon some 20 years ago, Aus Ch Nouveau Ringleader who also proved to be an outstandingly successful sire and if I remember rightly at the NSW Papillon Club Championship show where our own Bryan Mitchell judged Ringleader took BIS and all the other major awards went to Ringleader progeny and grand children. As successful as a dog may be in the ring I do think that, especially when exporting a dog, to have one exceed such expectations by breeding on so well is doubly satisfying. I know from the regular reports I get from Australia how important Brian's influence on the breed there has become. At the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club Championship Show Dog CC and BIS went to Int Ch Queen Bless JP Red Ideal owned by Mr K Hayashi and being his third CC in three successive shows gives him his UK title to add to his impressive list of International titles. Bitch CC and BPIS went to Elizabeth Cochrane's Tijuana Victoria, her first CC although she ahs of course been notching up a considerable number of BP awards. Reserve CC's went in dogs to Macstrak Minuet. JW ShCM owned by Helen Verity and her mother and in bitches to Irene and Glenn Robb's Ch Gleniren Starlight Kisses. The show was also the venue for the official launch of the Complete Illustrated Standards of the Papillon and Phalene and Deirdre and I were extremely grateful to the Northern and Eastern Club for allowing us to use the show for this purpose. Interestingly it was at this show last year that the idea for the book came into our minds and I cannot believe that it has just taken us 12 months to complete, although it seems longer!!!!!! Having taken some 120 books to the show (and I don't think my car would have taken many more given the size and weight of each individual book) we came away with just six so needless to say found that very pleasing. More pleasing was people's reactions although to be fair given the amount of information within the 168 pages of the book and the excitement of the show we did not really expect folk to be able to take it all in, it is a book which needs sitting down quietly and reading and absorbing. Even so feedback was very positive and we both hope that as folk get the chance to take it all in they will let us have their comments in due course. Obviously the first thing that struck folk was the sheer beauty of the production and its overall presentation and I really don't think in all my years in dogs I have ever seen a book so full of information and so beautifully illustrated. There really are a tremendous number of photographs of really beautiful papillons throughout the world, it proves beyond doubt that no one country can lay claim to the best in the world. For example there is one kennel who dogs appear a number of times based in Poland, the Forussi kennel, and these feature some of the loveliest photographs I have ever seen of papillons. It was a little surprising that despite all the pre publication information provided there were still some who seemed to have a little idea of the concept and content. Some still did not realise the size of the Book was A4, which is Dog World Annual size, expecting it to be just another 'handbook'. Others did not realise that it drew together the four breed standards in use around the world thinking it only concentrated on the UK standard. What was noticeable was the number of folk who felt that drawing together and comparing the four breed standards was useful in this modern day when dogs travel from country to country to be shown with such frequency and not a few expressed the view that they hoped many judges would read and digest the breed information it contained. I have to say that looking at some of the dogs in the ring the section on movement alone should be read and re read. Quite an exhausting day for Deirdre and I if only because of the anticipation of how the book would be received, no doubt there will be critics (aren't there always) and no doubt some will not see past the authors to the actual content, but most I am sure will accept it for what it is and hopefully will find much to enjoy and hopefully something to learn. Anyone wishing to learn more about the book can view the details on the web at http://www.papillons60.freeserve.co.uk/standard.htm or can contact Deirdre on 0207 739 7439 e-mail d.ashdown@tiscali.co.uk or myself on 01469 530760 e-mail mike@nouveaupaps.co.uk |
| Our Dogs | At Midland Counties Ch. Show on 28 October, Carolyne Allward-Chebsey chose Tussalud Cruella-de-Ville (bred by Kay Stewart and shown by Kirsten) for BCC and BOB; Mr Hayashi’s Int.Ch. Queen Bless JP Red Ideal (shown by Jean Banfield) took the DCC, with RDCC Stevens’ Tawzan Fun and Fancy Free and RBCC Robb’s Ch. Gleniren Starlight Kisses: Best Puppy was Patrick’s Frasermar Snowbird Volpecula. The results of the All Ireland Bull Breeds annual championship show at Cloghran on 31 October were: BOB and GSD Kavanagh’s Ir, Dan, Swed Ch Serenglad Gold Sovereign, RGSD Mooney’s Omaonaig Fire Bird; in bitches the GSB went to Conysluck Polar Star and RGSB Omaonaig Fairy Footsteps. From the latest issue of the KC Gazette, the following judges have been appointed for 2006: SKC (May) Mr A. Bendelow; Bath Mrs E. Anderson; Southern Counties Mrs R. Johnston; Windsor Miss H. Barr; Paignton Mr D. Jenkins; WKC Mrs R. Wardle; Richmond Mrs H. Byers; City of Birmingham (Sept) Miss M. Hourihane; Pap Club of Scotland Mr A. Wight. Check the Papillon Club’s website for the earlier 2006 judges. Further to the South of England Papillon Club’s recent Education Day, which I reported on last week, Mike Foster, who also mentioned it in his Dog World Breed Notes, said that the Club had put together some useful literature on Canine Herpes Virus (Steve Dean’s main subject), which he hoped might be made available to any interested members - as it is a matter of concern to a lot of breeders. This literature (all we could find at the time - though there is extensive American reporting on the web) is a bit out of date and, though it does mention the vaccine that is now available, is not really worth circulating. But we are very pleased to say that Steve is going to put all the information he gave us at the seminar in a future ‘A Vet’s View’ column in Dog World - so it will be better to wait for that. We look forward to seeing the new publication by Deirdre Ashdown and Mike Foster, The Complete Illustrated Standards of the Papillon and Phalene, which is to be launched at the Northern and Eastern show on Sunday and will be on sale there. A reminder to all Agility paps, taking part in Denise Welsh’s Papillon Agility League, of the Christmas Agility Show to be held on 11 December, at Hailsham; entries close on 21 November. The show includes a special ‘papillons only’ class. All points will obviously go towards winning the Agility Trophy which Denise has kindly donated. As a last note - you can’t be too careful when finding homes for puppies (as we all know!). There has been an exhausting run-around in connection with some people - keen as mustard for a puppy (they already had one papillon, who ‘needed a friend’), phoned everyone, finally bought one - and two weeks later the breeder was summoned (to travel a possible round trip of excess of 500 miles) to pick the puppy up immediately - their first papillon ‘wasn’t getting on with it’, and they were going on holiday. Sounded a good home at first, but turned out disaster. You just never know.... It has been sorted now, but if anyone is checking out possible homes for their puppies, you can phone me for the details in case these people start looking again. Please send any news you want printed, or items about Club activities, again to me for the time being. |

| Dog World | Carolyne Allward Chebsey was kind enough to point out that when reporting on the results of Midland Counties where she judged I incorrectly mentioned that the Bitch CC and BOB which went to Kay Stewart's Tussalud Cruella De Ville was not in fact her first CC but her second. Carolyne reminded me that she got her first at Driffield 2003. Melanie Mann has been kind enough to send on some news of the recent Merseyside Toy Dog Open Show where she had a super day winning the junior class with Harriet Victoria Melangel and the open class with Melangel Georgie Girl. 14 month old Harriet went on to take BOB. Melanie also tells me that a new exhibitor in papillons, Ian Quigley, won the puppy class with Ablazzor Razzamataz (Melanie believes it was the puppy's first show) age 7 months, BPIB and pleasingly went on to take 3rd in the puppy group. How nice to see a new exhibitor having some success and how nice to see a seasoned exhibitor being so willing to pass on the news. I hear that Lyn Richards (the previous Stall Holder for the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club is at present in Hospital and had an operation on Monday 14 November. At the time of writing I do not know how she is nor how long she will be in for, but it was expected she would be on for around 10 days. Because she is being moved from Ward to Ward at Burton Hospital, it may be better for those who wish to send Cards/flowers to send these to her daughter's address. Lyn will be recuperating at her daughter's home when she comes out of hospital. The address is Mrs L Richards, c/o 9 Rowton Street, Horninglow, Burton on Trent, DE13 OTN. I hope Bonfire Night went without problems for everyone. Fortunately around here it seems that the festivities were not over extended perhaps due to the fact that November 5 fell on the Saturday which meant most people had their night then rather than finding it stretching over several days (even if someone around here decided to have their fireworks at 7.00am on Sunday morning???) . It did however seem to me that this year was noisier than ever, my understanding was that some sort of limitation on the noise level had been placed in fireworks, if so then the level seems totally inadequate. It seems to me to be noisier than ever and at times felt like living in a war zone. Whilst I cannot say I am particularly excited by fireworks generally I really cannot understand what the pleasure is in having these large and noisy aerial bombs that seem to make little sparkle, all that seems important is the noise they can make. What the pleasure is in them I don't know but I am sure there are many cats and dogs not to mention the wildlife that spent the night terrified. Fortunately none of the dogs bother but one of the cats particularly was very upset even with the television turned up as loud as possible and tried to find somewhere secure indoors to hide and for a good week he would not venture out once dusk came. I know these days it seems we want everything banned but I really think the time has come to drastically reduce the noise level especially in residential areas and personally would have no objections to fireworks being banned altogether apart from properly organised displays. |
