I was sorry to hear that Inge Lewis had passed away suddenly at home, she was 79. Inge, whose prefix was Danica, had not been seen around the show ring for some years and I daresay there will be many of our newer members who will not remember her. She was on the A1 Specialist judging list however her last appointment here at Championship show level was back in 1993. I understand she had however judged more recently aboard, some three years ago judging in Spain where unfortunately she was mugged losing all her valuables, after which she vowed never to set foot outside of this country again. Her last papillon passed away a year ago. The funeral took place on Monday 5 September. At Birmingham Dog CC and BOB went to Irene and Glenn Robb's Ch Gleniren Scarlet Monogram with Bitch CC going to Sue Morrell and Thesbina Teague's Ch Serenglade Satanya For Temelora, Reserves went to Monogram's son Ch. Sunshoo Imascarlet Oscars for Gleniren owned jointly by Carolyn Roe and Glenn Robb in dogs and Sandra Austin and Jane Thompson's Jhanakia Highland Breeze in bitches. BP was Sue and Thesbina's Temelora Just Magic. Quite a weekend for Sue and Thesbina, Just Magic won the Toy Puppy Group at Birmingham on the Friday, on the Saturday they travelled up to the Club Open Show at Coventry and went BPIS with him there and on the Sunday travelled back to Birmingham for the BPIS competition where he ended up taking RBPIS. Many congratulations, as Sue said with three almost identical journeys from the South West up to the Birmingham area in three days the car almost knew its own way there. Just Magic has had a super run, as well as these two successes he of course won the Toy Puppy Group at Bournemouth and was BPIS at the Plymouth Open Show all in the space of less than four weeks. He is by Temelora Wallace (himself by Ch Serenglade Sebastian at Temelora out of Serenglade Simallah for Temelora) out of Serenglade Pickety Wytch for Temelora sol congratulations are also due to Linda Greenslade who of course is the breeder of the Serenglades. The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club held its Open Show on Saturday 3 September where BIS went to Jo Davidson Poston's Ibstock Tululah for Spinillons. I understand there were a few absentees but that the show went off well and folk seemed to enjoy themselves,. Of particular interest was the display Deirdre Ashdown put on of the art work from our forthcoming publication, The Complete Illustrated Standards of the Papillon and Phalene, and it was perhaps a little surprising that some folk still had little idea what this was all about. Indeed some seemed not to realise that it covered all the standards in use around the world nor that it would be A4 size rather than the usual handbook size. Given all the publicity it has received it is odd that folk should be under a misapprehension. Anyway I understand the display produced a lot of interest and people seemed really agog at the vast amount of detail it will contain. It way perhaps a pity it did not have a larger audience but no doubt word of mouth will spread the information. I was sorry to hear that Kay Stewart had lost Ch Tussalud Nickelodeon last year at the age of 17 1/2. Nickelodeon was I know a great favourite of Kay's and I am sure she still feels his loss keenly. I do however think it would only be right to mark the passing of this great little dog by saying something about him as many will not have seen him in his heyday in the ring and photos, however good, cannot capture the essence of any dog. Nickelodeon was born in October 1986, he was sired by Kay's import from Siv Roos in Sweden, Pierosas Rikard Lejonhjarta at Tussalud. Rikard himself won two CC's in the ring here but sadly was attacked at a show and ended up losing a testicle so never got the third he should have had. He in turn was sired by Sw Ch Pierosas Gateau a beautiful medium sized tri colour of the most exquisite type whom I had the honour to make BIS when I judged the Swedish Club Show in the mid 80's. Nickelodeon's dam, Tussalud June Bug, was a daughter of another import of Kay's, UK Ch Pierosas Pain Blanc at Tussalud, herself a prolific winner who took BPIS and BIS at the Club Championship Show in I think 1984, she too was sired by Gateau. Nickelodeon himself was a beautiful papillon, the same exquisite type as his grand sire, he had the most beautiful head enhanced by the blackest of eyes. He carried a super coat had a very well made body and was an ideal medium size. His one failing was that he refused to give the best of himself in the ring for Kay, all he wanted to do was have Kay make a fuss of him and if he did not get his way down his tail would go, not out of nerves, he really did not have a nerve in his body, but out of sheer stubbornness. Many times in the ring a judge clearly was taken with him but he let himself down, indeed I remember when getting another CC with Principality under Pauline Abbott she told me she would have preferred to have given it to Nickelodeon but he would not give his best, and to be fair I could not argue as they were both in their own ways outstanding papillons. Having one year at Crufts again thrown away his chances Kay asked us if we would take him on and try and see if he would go for us, so he came to live with us for a while in 1990 and it was then we really got to appreciate his qualities. As I said he carried a heavy coat and it could at times give the appearance he had less neck than he did, anyone seeing the dog wet in the bath would have seen what a super outline he actually had. We got to know his personality, and I have to say got to love him, he was such a little character. We managed to get him to behave (although not every single time!) but when he went he went well and we were able to campaign him to his title as well as to a Group 1 (beating the top dog of the year in the process) and a Group 2 (where the top dog beat him!!) and he ended the year Top Papillon. It was a struggle sometimes to find a way to motivate him and keep his interest, as I say it was not a case of nerves, indeed the day he took the Group with Mark handling at Southern Counties he was literally rushed to the group ring and the weather was far from good with a heavy downpour and tents flapping, all of which he thought was wonderfully interesting!!! As a sire he produced some wonderful offspring, Pauline and David Abbott's Ch Lordsrake Superman, our own Chs Nouveau Lord of the Dance and Nouveau Luck Be Lady to mention but three. And his litter sister of course mated to Principality produced Ch Tussalud Storyteller. It is not just his exquisite type and the lovely progeny he produced nor his success in the ring that typified the dog, it was his character and he had that in abundance. As I said he was a firm favourite of Kay's and in return, however much he enjoyed being with us for those months and however a happy little dog he was, he was never happier than when he was with Kay, and perhaps that's the best thing any of us can say about our dogs. I know Mark and I will look back fondly on the time we spent with him. Carolyne Allward Chebsey, Secretary of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club writes "The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club now has a new website and webmaster. Jill Terry, the webmaster will be implementing other changes and pages in the coming months which we hope will be of interest to you all. The website address is : http://www.papillonclub.co.uk and Jill asks - "As with all sites that contain a lot of information, this update is quite a mammoth task, and we trust you will bear with us while it is being worked on. If you do come across a link that is broken or some other error, please let me know so I can fix it immediately. If you wish to be kept fully informed of any updates to the website, please simply complete the form on the front page. Those of you with websites - if you have a link to a specific page other than the front page (http://www.papillonclub.co.uk) could you please update your site as that link will no longer work. Thank you" Our thanks to our previous webmaster Mr M Foster who did a great deal of work on the site while he was undertaking this job on behalf of the Club." |

I was sorry to hear from Bubbles Wood Davis that Ian McKnight is very poorly and is presently in hospital. I do not have any details of the hospital etc so those wishing to send cards had best send them to Ian and Anna's home. I am sure we all wish Ian a very speedy recovery. I also heard quite late last night that Carolyne Allward Chebsey had gone into hospital and again I am sorry to say I do not have any details and unfortunately have to get these notes out to Dog World before I can contact anyone to get further information. If the details have not already been placed on Papnet I am sure they will before these notes are out, again we all wish Carolyne a very speedy recovery. I know she has not been too well for a few years and has borne her troubles with fortitude so much so that probably most do not realise quite how poorly she has been. She does work very hard for the Club and I hope has not been over doing things. Richmond saw more success for another overseas dog, or should I say bitch as Connection Tri Symphony owned jointly by Mrs Abeloos-Devos and Jan Roosens from Belgium and Vesa Toivanen from Finland, and bred of course by Vesa, took the Bitch CC and BOB. Tri Symphony, or Noriko as she is known, has a number of overseas titles to her credit and this was her first showing in the UK so her first CC here. It was of course the second year in a row that the BOB at Richmond has gone to a dog from overseas, last year it was the famous Ch Antony who took the top spot and if my memory is correct he went on to take Group 2. Dog CC, a first for him I believe, went to Sue Stanbury's Inixia Time Bomb with the Reserves going to Mrs Bailey-Turner and Mrs Barlow's Beausher Ur a Little Star at Shazzabars in dogs and in bitches to Sue Morrel and Thesbina Teague's phalene Ch Serenglade Satanya For Temelora. Best Puppy was Inixia Time Bomb. Richmond of course is also Semi Finals day for the Junior Handlers JHA National Competition and our juniors certainly did the breed proud. Over 250 Juniors were competing for one of the 14 places for the Finals and for the first time papillons were the most popular breed for handlers in the Toy Group with 16 papillons competing. Overall Winner of the Toy Group for the 6-11 years old was Rebecca Thompson and overall winner for the Toy Group 12-16 years old was John Leiper, giving papillons the top spot in both age groups. Very many congratulations to all who managed to qualify for the semi's and in particular to young Rebecca and John for such an outstanding performance. They will both now go forward to the National Finals to be held on 28th January 2006 at the Metropole Hotel in Birmingham and I am sure we all wish them more success in February |

Terry Thorn was the judge at Birmungham City Ch S and his BOB and DCC was the Robb's Ch Dleniren Scarlet Monogram They also took the RDCC with their Sunshoo Imascarlrt Oscars for Gleniren which they own in partnership with David Roe. BCC went to Sue Morrell and Thesbina Teague's Ch Serenglade Satanya For Temelora and RBCC was Thompson & Austin's Jhanakia Highland Breeze. Best Puppy was Sue and Thesbina's Temelora Just Magic who then won the Toy Puppy Group and on returning on the last day won Res Best Puppy In Show, Congratulations. Two days later Ricky McKay judged the Papillon Club Open Show and his BB& BIS was Jo Davidson-Poston's Ibstock Tululah for Spinillons with RBIS,BOS and BD going to Jenny Scovell's Caswell Take A Chance. Best Puppy in Show was Sue and Thesbina's Temelora Just Magic who had a most successful weekend!! Ibstock Tululah for Spinillons passed her Good Citizens Test on Friday together with Jo's 10 yr old Nelbon Elusive Wish for Spinillons so she also had a successful weekend showing she has brains as well as beauty! I am very sad to hear from John Edson the news that a very old and dear friend has died at the age of 79.She was Inge Lewis breeder of the Danica Papillons and who broduced one of the most successful Agility dogs indeed she was the first to win the Agility Finals at Olympia ,handled by Eleanor Thomas, Danica Fuschia won many awards and Inga was so pleased at her successes. Inga later bred some very nice phalenes. She was born in Denmark and when I went over to judge the Danish Papillon Show Inga accompanied me and we stayed with Kitty Sjong so I hd not only one but two interpreters!! We had such an enjoyable time. I'm afraid we have not been in touch for some years so it was a shock to hear of her passing. John says that she last judged three years ago in Spain where she was mugged and lost all her valuables and vowed never to go abroad again. Her last Papillon died about a yearago. From Carolyne Allward-Chebsey comes the following: "The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club now has a new website and webmaster. Jill Terry, the webmaster will be implementing other changes and pages in the coming months which we hope will be of interest to you all. The website address is: http://www.papillonclub.co.uk and Jill asks - "As with all sites that contain a lot of information, this update is quite a mammoth task, and we trust you will bear with us while it is being worked on. Thank you" Our thanks to our previous webmaster Mr M Foster who did a great deal of work on the site while he was undertaking this job on behalf of the Club. And from the Kennel Club: The Kennel Club has introduced a new rosette, to be awarded to all competitors at Special Annual Matches. They will be distributed with Special Events licences and anyone already holding a licence can still obtain a pack of rosettes from the Kennel Club. |

BP was Elizabeth Cochrane's Tijuana Victoria Apparently there is a rumour going around that the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club's Championship Show has been cancelled. Quite where these rumours come from I do not know but I can reassure everyone this one is totally unfounded. The Show will indeed take place on 6 November at the Sports Hall, Barlby High School, Barlby, near Selby as planned with Amanda Bruce Jackson judging the dogs and Roger Chaston the bitches. I have just received my calendar for 2006 from the Northern and Eastern Club and yet again they have produced a lovely calendar, full of super photos and of course all the usual chow information for next year. Dororthy Simpson tells me that they are going very quickly so if you have not got your copy I suggest you do so quickly to save disappointment. Worms, Ticks and Parasites (both home bred and those picked up on visits abroad) 2. Canine Herpes Virus (a subject of present concern to breeders). Please contact Anne Borg for further details or to reserve your booking." I thought you would be interested in this follow up story from Melanie Mann: "Do you remember a request that Phil Shirley put out in March 2004 for a Deaf lady in London who wanted a Papillon to train as a hearing dog? Well I offerred her a bitch ( who's grandfather Melangel Bazil Bedazzled was already a hearing dog). Alwenil Crystal Gale went to her in April 2004 and has now qualified as a hearing dog. This is what Elaine says - what a lovely story! Great News Pippa and I passed our last assessment on 9th August 2005. Bruce, who came to do it was very impressed with Pippa, she responded very well. I can now rely on her to get me up in the mornings and don't have to keep looking at the cooker timer to see when the dinner is cooked and if someone calls she always tells me. It is also a great blessing to be able to take her everywhere with me. Bruce said he would send me her new coat and lead and I am looking forward to using them. She has been able to go everywhere with me in her trainer coat and has been on the London Eye, V & A, Natural History and Tate Modern Museums, had her photo taken with world famous artists by an official photographer at the Royal Academy of Music, Kew Gardens, been on a coach tour to Chichester with a group from St Paul's Cathedral etc . She also goes to restaurants and shops with me and everyone says she is very well behaved. Now she wears her coat people say to me I have heard of Hearing Dogs, but have never seen one before and of course they all fall in love with her. I am so pleased she has made it to be a registered Hearing Dog and I am sure you will be pleased to add this to your history of dogs you have bred" It is indeed a lovely story Melanie. John Edson Secretary of N&E Cos Pap Club wishes to deny rumours that the 14th Championship Show will not take place! It will be hld at the Sports Hall Barlby High School Barlby Nr Selby On Sunday 6th November 2005 at 9am I do not understand how these rumours start but like the one about there being no food provided last year this on is NOT TRUE Entries close 26th September Schedules from John if required. Petula Field from Rhyl N Wales Writes:"My 14 month old dog Glynllifon Pocket Rocket also passed at City of Birmingham without any prior training. Indeed he was carrying on the family tradition as his paternal grandfather Pinelan Coppernob, who sadly is no longer with us, was one of the first Papillons to pass the Good Citizens Award. It is my intention to put his father Happypappy Forestflame through the scheme as soon as an opportunity arises." Don't forget I can only report successes like this if you let me know about them so don't hide your light under a bushell , write, phone or e-mail! |
