Dog World

Phil Shirley has been kind enough to send me details of the various activities planned for later in the year by the South of England Papillon Club, once again this Club will have a very full agenda for the year with some very interesting and educational events planned. On Sunday 31st July 2005 the Club holds it's Fun Day Garden Party at Bradfield.A fun social event with: Agility Display,  agility and jumping courses for you and your dogs to "Have a Go" , plenty of novelty classes, Puppy and Baby Puppy walks, this is a great way to socialise your young puppies. There will be a fancy dress parade, junior and senior handling classes. We will have  a stall manned by volunteers from the "Dogs for the Disabled " and hopefully they will put on a working display for us . We shall also have a stall featuring the artwork for the forthcoming Complete Illustrated Standard for the Papillon and Phalene (CISPAP).  Deirdre Ashdown will be present to discuss this new publication, it will be most interesting to see all the artwork and have a preview of this latest publication on the breed. Other stalls will be in attendance, a bumper raffle , bring and buy stall , cake and produce stall. As usual a varied lunch menu will be available (pre bookable), basically a day of plenty of fun for all Papillons and their owners.

On Sunday 23rd October 2005 there will be a Papillon Education day at the Victory Hall, Stogursey, Somerset . The morning presentation will be by Steve Dean (of Dog World's  "A Vets View") who has kindly agreed to present a talk on the following subjects: 1. Worms, Ticks and Parasites (both home bred and those picked up on visits abroad)

2. Canine Herpes Virus (a subject of present concern to breeders).  In the Afternoon Caroline Lee-Farnsworth (Graycaz papillons) will give a talk and demonstration on "Grooming the Papillon" (tips on coat management, show preparation and some pointers on nutrition) "What you put into your dog is as important as what you put on him!" The day will include tea/coffee breaks, full lunch, and a cream tea to finish off what promises to be a most interesting day.

Saturday 17th December 2005 will be the Christmas Party Match. This event is proving to be the highlight of the clubs year, a great day consisting of Puppy walks, adult and puppy matches, and a full roast Christmas Dinner with all the trimmings, including gifts for everyone (human and canine) hand delivered by Santa Claus. Do not miss out, numbers are limited and early reservation  is recommended.

Phil has also sent the following dates for 2006 activities  2nd April 2006 Club A.G.M. and "Papillons Walk for Charity" our annual sponsored charity walk will next year be held in aid of "Dogs for the Disabled", 20th May 2006 Open Show at Chieveley: Judges: Breed Classes: Mrs J Savage, Welfare Classes: Mr I Chandler

Three Championship Show saw Jenny Scovell's Ch Caswell Classic Tri take the dog CC and BOB. Bitch CC went to Evelyn Needham's Marshlea Lady Emma, I believe her first, Reserves went to Sue Stanbury's Inixia Troysdale Time Traveller in dogs and Rosemary Ayris' Baladora Pretty Remarkable in bitches. BP was Sue Morrell and Thesbina Teague's Temelora Just Magic

At Border Union Bitch CC and BOB went to Irene and Glenn Robb's Gleniren Scarlet Signature, I believe her third thus giving her her title subject to KC Confirmation. She was short listed in the Group. Dog CC went to Jeanette Mackay's recently crowned Jaylanjay Amastunner with reserves going to Claire Butler's Tinkle Dr No in dogs and Mrs Kirk's Kirkchase Razzle Dazzle. BP was Chris Coffey's Christea Madam Butterfly.

Always nice to hear that when one sends a papillon overseas it has a successful show career and I hear that Cordonrouge Clarissa bred by Phil Shirley and now owned by Terry Amato in the USA is doing well. Her most recent win being BOS with a 3 point major at the Waconia Show.

A reminder that there is not much time left to get in those entries for the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club Calendar Competition. The weather is ideal now for photos and I am sure all the gardens are looking lovely to five a good background so get snapping now. All entries to the Calendar Organiser, if you have mislaid the details just give Dorothy a ring and I am sure she will let you know.

Terry Justice (Lysandra Papillons) has recently been in hospital for an operation, the first of three planned on her knees and hip, I believe the next one is due around February next year. I am sure she would appreciate hearing from folk whilst she is out of action. Still she has something to look forward to as I hear that she and Nigel are getting married on 13 August (which I have checked is definitely not a Friday!!!!)

An item caught my eye recently in last week's Dog World (24 June) being the Letter of the Week. For those who missed the letter it dealt with the question of dogs being kept in crates and was prompted by earlier reports of the case where so many animals were found in a house in crates, many doubled and even trebled up and some in poor condition. As the writer says crates do indeed have their place, most of us train our dogs to get used to spending some time in their crates,  so they are used to it when travelling and showing. Often dogs are fed in their crates for sensible reasons, to ensure the greedy ones don't eat more than their fair share and at night to sleep in. There is indeed nothing wrong with that indeed many of us would say it makes sense. The writer of the letter makes a very important distinction however between the proper use of such facilities and what in some cases is tantamount to abuse. I have to say I very much agree with the writer when she says that dogs that have to spend most of their day crated and caged are being subjected to mental cruelty, what a life to spend the majority of one's time in a cage and only let out for exercise - sounds a bit like prison doesn't it. I am sure we have all seen examples of breeders where their dogs are housed in this manner, no doubt the folk concerned ease their own minds by telling themselves the dogs get regular exercise and outings something not always evidenced by the muscle tone on their dogs. There is frankly no good reason why dogs should spend the majority of their time in confinement, at least no good reason from the dog's point of view.

Another item worth reading was Sheila Atter's article in Dog World 10 June about Breed Notes

With effect from the 6 July my new address will be Ferndale, Silver Street, Barrow Upon Humber, N Lincs DN19 7DN. The telephone number remains the same 01469 530760.

At the Kilkenny All Breeds Ch Show in Ireland GSB and BOB went to Diane Mooney's Ch Omaonaig Flame of Tara, GSD to Dolly Kavanagh's Multi Ch Serenglade Gold Sovereign, RGSD to Marion Sloan's  Austerene Academy Award and RGSB to Mrs Switzer's Oldcourt Henrietta. I was sorry to hear that Dolly had been very unwell lately and hope by the time these notes are out she is feeling much better. At Windsor Dog CC and BOB went to Jenny Scovell's Caswell Take A Chance, I believe this was his first CC. Bitch CC went to Sue Morrell and Thesbina Teague's Phalene Serenglade Satanya For Temelora and this being her third CC gives her her title subject to KC Confirmation. She becomes the second Phalene bitch champion to be made up in the UK the first being of course Marion Sloan's Ch & Ir Ch Sunshoo Imamovie Premiere. Satanya was of course bred by Linda Greenslade who has done so much to boosting the profile of the pahlene her in the UK. Reserves CC's went to Mrs M Comrie, Mr F & Mrs M & Whitehill's Frasermar Blizzard in dogs and  Mesdames K Munn, R & Farrel's Tricianbri Gin Fizz Ringlands in bitches, she was also BP.

Some judges for next year have now appeared in the KC Gazette. WELKS Mrs B Taylor; South Wales KA Miss V Hourihane; Bournemouth Mrs Z Thorn-Andrews; UK Toy Dog      Dogs Mrs E Cochrane Bitches   Mrs P Munn; Birmingham: (May) Dr A Schemel; Blackpool Mrs B Flavel; East of England Mrs I Robb; Driffield Mrs J Leverett; LKA Mrs S Stanbury.

As Mark and I are moving tomorrow there may not be any notes next week, please let me have any news and I will save it for the following week.

A little while ago I wrote about some success for a new owner of papillons, Sarah Hesketh and her partner Jeremy with their Rimzim Joshua Inch Perfect in the Obedience ring and the KC Good Companion Awards. Joshua has continued to do well, at Wolverhampton Open Obedience Show he took a creditable 2nd to a working sheepdog in Special Beginners and qualified for the Crufts Final in the Good Citizen Arena. The same day he took another 2nd in Pre-beginners Obedience and 1st in Beginners Open Obedience. I must admit I am not up to date with all these various competitions and awards but certainly this little lad has done well, he now has his Bronze, Silver and Gold KC Good Citizens Awards. Unfortunately Sarah and her partner may not be able to attend Crufts with him as they are emigrating to New Zealand and if everything goes well will have left by the time of Crufts. Given Joshua's success I am sure they can find him a job in New Zealand controlling the sheep!!!!!

Carolyne Allward-Chebsey has sent the information that due to unforeseen circumstances Terry Nethercott, who won the Ch Show Judges Ballot, is unable to undertake the Club's 2007 Ch Show appointment. The next available person on the ballot was Mr Michael Quinney and he will now be judging Bitches in 2007 subject to KC approval.  Mrs Clare Anne Ahearn will be judging the dogs at this show

At S W K A Dog CC and BOB went to Davison's Dandinfee Barney Bubbles and if I am correct his is a first CC for both dog and owner. Bitch CC went to Irene and Glenn Robb's recently crowned Ch Gleniren Scarlet Signature. Reserve's went to Dolly Kavanagh's Ir/Dk/Swed Ch Serenglade Gold Sovereign in dogs and Jane Thompson and Sandra Austin's Jhanakia Highland Breeze in bitches. BP was Sophie Langdon and Chris Coffey's Christea Madame Butterfly who I understand went on to win the Toy Puppy Group. Many congratulations to Sophie and Chris who must have been over the moon.

At the Bray Championship Show in Ireland GSD and BOB went to Connie Letch's Conysluck Peter Pan and it is nice to see Connie back in the ring and doing so well in her new 'country'. I believe this must have been the little dog that someone wrote to me about some while ago and said how nice it was. Bitch GS went to Diane Mooney's Ir Ch Omaonaig Flame of Tara, RGSD went to Sue Belshaw's Belvisaj Simply Charming and RGSB to Diane's Omaonaig Fairy Footsteps

I am sure that for most of us this week has been over shadowed by the horrific bombings which took place in London, I hope none of our papillon folk were caught up in this. I know Deirdre Ashdown is not far from where one of the incidents occurred and was glad to hear from her on the day to know she was safe. Having worked in the heart of the city during the 80's when the IRA attacks took place I know only too well the effect of such events on one's day to day life.

The Secretary of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club writes "Due to circumstances, Mr Nethercott who won the members' Championship Show Judges Ballot, is unable to undertake the Club's 2007 Championship show appointment. As instructed by the committee, I have contacted the next person on the Ballot who is available. Therefore Mr M Quninney will be judging Bitches at the 2007 Championship show (subject to KC approval). Mrs C Ahearn will be doing the Dogs at this show." Mr Quinney of course judged dogs at the 2001 Championship Show and it is a little surprising that the same judge should be officiating again at our show just six years later (bearing in mind we only have an all rounder every other year) albeit judging a different sex. This is of course no reflection on Mr Quinney whose judging experience is well known to us all nonetheless I doubt that any of our specialists would be given the opportunity to judge twice at our shows within such a short space of time. I thought it was generally accepted that there would be a longer span between such engagements. Perhaps if it is found that all rounders are being booked up earlier some thought should be given earlier to which judges should be put forward for the ballots.

At the All-Ireland Toy Dog Club BOB & GSD went to Dolly Kavanagh's Ch Dan Swed Ch Serenglade Gold Sovereign, GSB to Diane Mooney's Ch Omaonaig Flame of Tara , RGSD to Mrs Killeen-King's Penang Goldenleas Rougemist and RGSB to Dolly's Denemore Cameo Reflection.

Elizabeth Cochrane telephoned me with some news of a papillon that was lost on 12 July in the Pooley Bridge area near Penrith in Cumbria. The lady who owns the dog was out walking with her when she disappeared from sight. Whilst looking for her the owner met another lady who said she had not seen the dog but the owner now thinks that perhaps the dog was stolen as it was most unusual for her to stray far from her owner.. The papillon is a 2 year old spayed bitch, red and white with black masking and answers to the name of Sophie, although her owner says she also responds to the name Ellie which is the name of another dog the owner had. The lady who owns the dog spent the entire day looking for her in the area without success. Elizabeth tells me the owner has made contact with the police etc and I have suggested she speak to Jo Davidson Poston as I am sure Jo can help her with advice as to what to do (hope you don't mind Jo). Meantime if anyone knows of anyone who suddenly turns up with a dog matching that description perhaps they could contact the owner, Brenda Christopher on 01305 251471, this is her home number in Dorset. I don't have a contact number for her whilst she is staying in the Penrith area but no doubt Elizabeth does. And if there are any readers in that area no doubt they will keep an eye out.

A neighbour of mine who shows Beardies telephoned me from Paignton as she had heard that Gordon Urquhart had been involved in a nasty car accident. Some more news has come over Papnet and it appears that this occurred on the M5 between Taunton and Bridgewater on Monday 11 July. Gordon was on his way to the Paignton Show when a car and lorry were involved in an accident about 400 yards ahead of him. The lorry in front of Gordon stopped as did Gordon but it appears that the lorry behind him did not manage to and hit Gordon's car. It seems that Gordon has suffered neck and spinal injuries as well as a badly cut eye and at the time of writing is in Portman Ward, Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, Somerset. Apparently Sue Morrell saw the accident just after it had happened and those involved had been taken off to hospital but of course was not aware at the time that Gordon was involved. We all hope his injuries are not too serious, although having experienced something similar at the end of last year I know only too well the neck injuries alone will be painful enough even if confined just to whiplash. If I get any further news before the deadline for these notes ends I will forward it for inclusion with these.

Gordon Urquhart of Plackpark Papillons who also owns Hub International with his wife Cathy was involved in a very bad accident on the M5 between Taunton and Bridgewater Gordon was on his way to Paignton Show when a car and lorry were involved in an accident about 400yds ahead of him. Gordon and the lorry in front of him stopped but unfortunately the Safeway lorry behind hit both of them Gordon was taken to Portman Ward Musgrove Park Hospital Taunton with Neck and spinal injuries as well as a badly cut eye.  At the time of writing I hear that Gordon has had his operation and is in the intensive care unit. I hope to be able to give better news of him next week.  All our sympathies are with you Gordon and Cathy.

At SWKA Jimmy Simpson gave DCC & BOB to Davidson's Dandinfee Barney Bubbles with DCC going to Dolly Kavanagh's Multi Ch Serenglade Gold Sovereign, BCC went to   the Robb's Ch Glenoiren Scarlet Signature. RBCC was Thompson & Austin's Jhanakia Highland Breeze and B.Puppy Chris Coffey's and Sophie Langdon's Christea Madame Butterfly who went on to win the Toy Puppy Group

At the All Ireland Toy Dog Club group Ch Show the results were BOB & GSD Kavanagh's Multi Ch Serenglade Gold Sovereign RGSD Killeen-King's Penang Goldenleas Rougemist GSB Mooney's Ir Ch Omaonaig Flame of Tara and RGSB Kavanagh's Denemore Cameo Reflection

Elizabeth Cochrane rang me with news of a missing Papillon she is a small (4lbs) R/W almost all white body with shoulder flash and a slight black face mask she is 2yr old and spayed, very dainty and answers to the name Sophie or Ellie which was the name of the owners other dog,  Brenda Christopher on holiday from Dorset was walking with her at Pooley Bridge near Penrith and having passed a woman going in the opposite direction she discovered Sophie had disappeared, as she never strayed far Her owner retraced her steps and asked the woman if she had been seen but the answer was no.  Brenda stayed on the fell searching all day but there was no trace of Sophie and she fears that she might have been stolen. Police, etc., have been informed but anyone who may have seen a Papillon answering this description appearing where there had not been one before or being able to help in any way contact Brenda at her Dorset number 01305 251471.  What a distressing experience.

Congratulations to Sue Morrell & Thesbina Teague who as well as making up their lovely Phalene at Windsor also won the Puppy Stakes for that day with their 8 months old Temelora Just Magic

A message from Denise Welsh: "For all agility buffs, the World Agility Qualifiers will take place again at Coventry this coming Monday, I know that Dawn Weaver and Dreamer will be trying hard to get a place on the team, I don't know if Lynda and Alex will also be trying, Good Luck to Dawn and Lynda, Harlie will only be spectating this year and | maybe doing the paperwork, far less stressful!!  The Final will be held in Spain this year in September."

And a message from sue Morrell: "Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Handbook, 2006. This is just a reminder that the closing date for placing your orders for inclusion into the new Club Handbook 2006 is   31st July, 2005.   As stated before, this is going to be an ALL COLOUR edition which will be seen by others all over the world. Full details of how to place your order together with an application form can be found on the Club`s website, ww.papillonclub.co.uk The weather is good and we have some lovely sunshine so get those cameras out and start shooting!  Or get someone else to take them for you! All papillons (and their owners) are welcomed into the handbook - those that show, those that are athletic and energetic and do agility, flyball, dancing to music, obedience etc., and those that are companions, but may be just an energetic!  But at the end of the day, they are all the best dogs!"

I am sorry to report that Gordon Urquart was involved in a nasty car accident on his way to the Paignton Show. It seems a lorry and car were involved in an accident about 400 yards ahead of him, Gordon was able to stop but the lorry behind him did not and hit him pushing him into the lorry in front. He sustained neck and spinal injuries and was taken to hospital and underwent some major surgery where a small piece of bone was grafted from his hip to his neck. The latest news I have is that his up and about  and getting some of his strength back and is able to walk slowly around the ward. Hopefully by the time these notes are out he will be back home recuperating. News got around very quickly thanks to the Internet and he has received many cards and good wishes for which he passes on his thanks. As nasty as this was he was extremely lucky, Sue Morrell passed by the scene shortly after he had been taken to hospital so of course did not realise at the time it was Gordon involved and she says it really was quite horrifying. I am sure we all wish him a speedy recovery and can be thankful it was not worse.

Sue Morrell and Thesbina Teague have asked me to pass on their thanks to everyone who has sent congratulations following their making up their phalene Ch Serenglade Satanya for Temelora and I am sure her breeder, Linda Greenslade is equally delighted by her success. As I said earlier Linda has worked very hard on her phalene line, we all know how hard it is to breed good papillons breeding good phalenes is a monumental task given the small gene pool we have and she is to be congratulated on the endeavours she has put into this. Sue also tells me that their papillon Temelora Just Magic won the Puppy Stakes on the same day at Windsor that Satanya gained her title, so an extra celebration that day for them.

Queenie Bruce was judging Papillons and other Toys at the Liskeard Premier Show and had a good entry of 36 papillons. BOB went to Michelle Osborne's Tykkydewas Masterdarcy, by Tykkydewas Twylytedancer out of Tykkydewas Harriet and he went on to take the Toy Group. BP went to Temelora Just Magic who took Toy Puppy Group 2.

At Paignton Championship a delighted Jo Davidson Poston took the CC with Ir Ch Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons Sh.CM and this being his third CC gives him his UK Title subject to KC confirmation. Needless to say Jo was over the moon, she tells me he is the first Papillon to hold his current three titles, bred by Rosemary Ayris he is by Ch. Ibstock Mark of Distinction out of Daneview Dainty Blue Bonnet and is the fourth UK Champion sired by mark of Distinction. Bitch CC and BOB went to Irene and Glenn Robb's  Gleniren Starlight Kisses, I believe her second with Reserves going to Sue Stanbury and Margaret Unwin's Inixia Dreams Magic in dogs and Rosemary and David Ayris' Baladora Pretty Remarkable Of Ibstock in bitches. BP was Sue Morrell and Thesbina Teague's Temelora Just Magic.

Some worrying telephone calls have been received lately from someone enquiring about puppies. Apparently the caller is from the Manchester area but it is believed has connections with folk making similar enquiries and attending some shows in Northern Ireland . There are it seems some good reasons for concerns so if anyone receives calls for stock (and often the caller drops names of well known breeders into the conversation to give the impression of some form of recommendation) do have a word with the Club Secretary who is aware of this as well as telling the caller you will check with the names given. Personally I think it is a good idea for anyone getting puppy enquiries to insist on a land line telephone contact number, and checking it is a genuine enquiry, and also making it clear to callers that if you do have puppies they are pets only and the papers will be endorsed accordingly (or even with held). Careful checks especially if one is considering letting a dog or bitch go for show/breeding must these days be essential. Please everyone do be careful

Our Dogs Tom Mather judged at Paignton Ch Show and his BOB and BCC was the Robb's Gleniren Scarlet Kisses, RBCC went to the Ayris' Baladora Pretty Remarkable of Ibstock. DCC was Jo Davidson-Poston's IrCH Ibstock Bright Spark For Spinillons Sh C M and as this was his long awaited third he now becomes Jo's latest Champion Congratulations!! RDCC was Stanbury & Unwin's Inuxia Dreams Magic. and Best Puppy was Morrell & Teague's Temelora Just Magic.

At East of England Ch Show Sue Terry Judging made up another lovely Champion by awarding BOB and DCC to the Robb's and David Roe's Sunshoo Imascarlet Oscars for Gleniren, what a wonderful run they are having! RDCC was Stanbury & Unwin's Inixia Gigolo. BCC was Comrie-Bryant's Frasermar Ice Queen and RBCC was the Robb's Ch Gleniren Scarlet Signature Best Puppy was Elizabeth Cochrane's Tutylak Willie Wonka.

Denise Welsh e-mails that Dawn Weaver and her clever Phalene Dreamer have qualified for the World Agility Final in Spain in September. Apparently they did it in style against some very fast mini dogs. I know that they will go to Spain with all our Best Wishes!

Sue and Thesbina were able to visit Gordon Urquhart who is still in Musgrove Hospital Taunton after his Accident and operation They found him very Cheerful, getting his strength back and starting to walk slowly round the ward.He hopes to be backhome sometime next week.

Many people from Ireland and some in Scotland and this country have been getting very worried about one or two different men and sometimes a woman who are phoning constantly asking for a stud( claiming to have a Sunshoo or Ringlands bitch) or asking for a puppy bitch and Claiming to know various people,eg Pat Munn who has never heard of them and after ringing John Edson and being refused by him the very next person they rang they claimed to know John!! In Ireland one of these men who has a distinctive voice has been seen at the shows in Eire and indeed has been challenged by exhibiters and has become abusive

They also seem to have some connections with Manchester as delivery has been asked to there. I hear he may have got a puppy which is sad as it may be an attempt to recreate the big puppy farm which the authorities shut down in S Ireland last year So beware!

Schedules are now available for the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Open Show on Saturday 3rd September at the Sports Connexion Ryton-on Dunsmore. This is the day after City Of Birmingham and so would round off the weekend beautifully. Schedules from Show Manager Mr P Hancocks. 2 Hurst Rd, Southam, Warks CV47 1HY Tel: 01926 813801 e-mail; p.hancocks@btopenworld.com

Finally Congratulations to Marie Moss and Blairandcos Merry Go Round at Delphlands who went BIG at Pollard CS at Selby Well Done!
