It still seems strange that Manchester comes so early in the New Year, no longer the luxury for some of a decent break between the last show of the year and the first of a new year. I wonder how many preferred it when Crufts was the first show of a new year, perhaps it added to the excitement of even Crufts for some. I am sure for John and Gary Turner such thoughts were the furthest from their minds and they would not have minded when or where Manchester was held this year as they got the magic third CC and with it BOB with their Kingshaven Truly Scrummy For Bodebi. This gives her her title subject to KC confirmation. Truly Scrummy is their first champion in papillons and even though they have made up champions ion other breeds I am sure this win had that extra special meaning. Truly Scrummy was of course bred by Jean and Roger Banfield and is by Kingshaven Rock 'N' Roll out of Bonifee Scintillating Susie at Kingshaven. Dog CC went to Irene and Glenn Robb's Ch Gleniren Scarlet Monogram (Ch Ringlands Hologram out of Sunshoo Imascarlet Erika at Gleniren). Reserve Dog CC went to Helen Verity's Macstrak Minuet JW Sh.CM in dogs, bred by Carol Hatch and by Tijuana Minstrel out of Macstrak Sweet In Silk, I beeline this is Helen's first 'Green Card' in the breed so she too must have been highly pleased. In bitches the Reserve went to Sue Victor and Emma McLaughlin's home bred Farleysbane Fly High, by  Amicae Rudi Bare ex Lordsrake Whispering Dreams at Kingshaven. Best Puppy was Sue Stanbury's Inixia Wily Willum

For those interested in Agility a recent announcement from the KC reads " The Kennel Club would like to remind competitors that Regulation H(1)(B)5 is now effective and any mini or midi agility dog that has not competed prior to 1st January 2005 must be measured before its first competition. Dogs that have competed prior to 1st January 2005 will have a grace period until 1st September 2005 to be measured. Additional measurers have been appointed since the scheme was launched in 2004 and all the approved measuring officials are listed below. Societies are invited to contact their local measurers to arrange measuring sessions or to arrange for measurers to attend shows." A list of 'local measurers' follows the announcement. too lengthy to reproduce here but if anyone is interested I am sure they can get details from the KC. I wonder if the KC will ever think of introducing measuring sticks for breed competition, after all where some breeds have weight restrictions they are weighted so one could easily perhaps argue where there are height restrictions similar measurements should be taken. I am sure quite a few of us can remember a good few years ago when Bryan Mitchell brought a measuring stick into our ring, (I wonder if he will do so again at UK Toys) it could produce some interesting results.

A note from young Vicki Loader tells me how much she enjoyed her first judging engagement a month or so ago at the Bolsover Open Show where her BOB went to Kazkell Dillon's Dream JW ShCM.

I am sorry to report that Aubrey Swann, husband of the late Gwen Swann, has passed away.the funeral took place on 27th January at Bury ST Edmunds. Aubrey ahd I udnerstand been unwell for some time.

Sue Stanbury has written regarding the S Wales Papillon Club's forthcoming handbook. "Its getting, well past the dead-line for photographs to be submitted from all those lucky people that have won CC,BPIB or BVIB at CH Shows throughout 2004. Also BIS, RBIS, BPIS or BVIS at breed Open/Limit Shows. If you would like to include a photo in the handbook. It will cost £10.00. Also (Free of charge) we will be including data of all Papillons that have been Veterinary tested clear of Patella Luxation or PRA this year. They must be over 12mths old and I would like a copy of the Veterinary Certificate. So far I have not had any body interested in letting me know. Surely I am not the only one that tests their dogs!!!! For further information, please contact me by papnet, or by phone"

Finally the KC has announced that the Toy Group at Crufts this year will not commence until 6.10 pm, this is some 40 minutes alter than previously, and hopefully will help ensure that the BOB does not miss the Group.

Howard Ogden was the judge at Manchester Show and his BCC and BOB was Messrs Turner's Kingshaven Truly Scrummy For Bodebi Her 3rd CC making her the first Champion for 2005 Congratulations! RBCC went to the Victor's and Emma's Farleysbane Fly High.  DCC was Glenn & Irene Robb's Ch Gleniren Scarlet Monogram, and RDCC was a first green card for  Helen Verity and Macstrak Minuet JW S Ch.  Best Puppy was Sue Stanbury's Inixia Wily Willum.

I have just heard that Aubrey Swann Gwen Swann's husband has passed away.  As I understand, the Cremation was to be today 27th at Bury St Edmunds. Aubrey had been ill for some time, they were such a devoted couple it must have been difficult for him to survive without Gwen.

Joy Standen is to be cremated at Cambridge City Crematorium on 31st January.  I understand that she moved into sheltered accommodation in April but lately suffered a broken wrist and as a result of the effect of painkillers on her weakened system she passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning.  She is survived by her two devoted sons to whom go condolences.

Philip Shirley points out that the KC have sensibly decided to start the Toy Group at Crufts at 6.10pm, forty minutes later than last year. Hopefully this will help to avoid the disappointment when BOB misses the Group

I hear that Isabel Urquhart (Blackpark) has been in a Nursing Home for a few weeks now and I am sure some of her many friends would like to get in touch. Isabel can be contacted at Lashbrook House,  Mill Road,  Lower Shiplake near Henley - on - Thames,  RG9 3LP.

Claire Butler and her dog Murphy (Tinklebury Dr No) took part in the Junior Handling Association Finals held at the NEC and although not pulled out in the final placings Claire put on a really good show, the highest awards apparently went to handlers of 16 and 17 years old. To reach the final of course Clare had had to beat some of the top Juniors in Toys, many of whom had been handling for a good number of years, and at just 12 years old Clare has done extremely well. I am sure there will be lots more success to come for this young lady and that we all look forward to her going even further next year.

Carolyne Allward Chebsey, Secretary of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club has asked me to mention that it has been necessary to change the date of the Club's AGM. This will now be held on Sunday 29 May at the Warwick Suite, Coventry

Members of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club will have seen in the recent Newsletter details of the new project Deirdre and I are undertaking, the Complete Illustrated Standard for the Papillon and Phalene. It will be quite a considerable task comparing and commenting on the various aspects of the four breed standards (UK, US, Australian and FCI)and as anyone who has read these will know there are a good number of differences in these, some rather surprising. Given the frequency with which dogs now travel to complete in other countries successfully this is perhaps rather surprising. Fortunately we have been able to obtain a great deal of cooperation from well known breeders and exhibitors from all over the world as well as from the UK. As mentioned in the Newsletter we have published a web site (http://www.papillons60.freeserve.co.uk/standard.htm ) on which there is a lot of information regarding the project as well as a preview of some of the illustrations that will be included. Originally we had intended to use something like 300 full colour illustrations but have now decided there will be nearer 500, rather than restrict details to just correct points of the standard we shall also be using illustrations and photographs to show faults - for example some 100 drawings and diagrams alone on ear carriage (for both papillon and phalene), 34 on tail set and carriage and 14 to illustrate 'stop'. Because of this we have decided we will not be ready in time to produce this for the Club's Championship Show in April and have put back the date until the summer. Anyone who does not have access to the Internet and is interested in obtaining more information is welcome to contact either Deirdre or myself direct.

Claire Butler and Murphy(Tinklebury Dr No) took part in the Pedigree Stakes Final & JHA Finals at the NEC and I am told put on a really good show. Claire is just 12yrs old and the highest awards went to handlers aged 16 and 17 However she has time on her side and I am sure we will hear of her again in these Top Competitions and we should feel very proud of her

At Manchester Ch Show  10yr old Ashlie Pike and his Papillon Panspayon Ur Flyingsolo won the YKC AV Toy Stakes giving us another youngster to be proud of  Congratulations Ashlie!

Ruth Johnston has let us know that Isobel Urquhart of the Blackpark Papillons   has been in a Nursing Home for some weeks now and is sure she would  be pleased to hear from old friends, the address is: Lashbrook House, Mill Rd, Lower Shiplake, Nr Henley-on-Thames RG9 3LP

25 February
Dog World I have been asked to mention that the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club AGM date has changed, it will now be held on Sunday 29th May 2005 and not as stated in the Preliminary Notice. The Venue remains the same. Items and proposals for the agenda along with nominations for the Committee from fully paid up members are to be with the Secretary not later than 15th March 2005 as per the Preliminary Notice. At its Championship Show on 24 April the Club will be running an Eye Testing session with Mr John Goodyear being the Vet to test the dogs. This Eye Testing session is open to ALL breeds although only Papillons will be tested at the discounted price of £15.00 each. All other breeds will cost £19.00. Bookings to be made at the time of entries close. Dogs for Eye Testing need not be entered at the show but WILL NOT be allowed in the hall where the show is being held as per Kennel Club Regulations, UNLESS entered in the show as an exhibit or NFC. If entered as an exhibit or NFC details will be required on the entry form. Please remember to bring your dogs registration papers so results can be recorded with our PRA Record Holder. A committee member will co-ordinate the timings with you so it does not interfere with you showing your dog. Please make an effort and have your dogs eyes tested, the Club is running this session for you and the good of the breed  Further details can be obtained from the schedules which are now obtainable either direct from the Secretary, the Club Stand at Crufts or can be downloaded from the Club's web site at http://w ww.papillonclub.co.uk   entries close 25 March. Another Club making a great effort to give something to members is the South of England Papillon Club whose forthcoming Open Show on 21 May will again be giving prize money, with over £300 on offer at this show (if you are hoping for BIS best get Securicor to accompany you!!!). There will be 22 Breed Classes, 3 Special Welfare Classes, the Chairman's Special Stakes Class and Junior Handling Classes so plenty of opportunity for everyone to win some of that lovely prize money. The venue this year will be at Cheiveley, I am not sure if this is a new venue or not, but full details will of course be available in the schedules which will be available shortly or at Crufts. Unfortunately due to personal circumstances I have decided I am not able to continue as Chairman of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club and have therefore tendered my resignation to the Secretary. For the time being the Vice Chairman will undertake these duties until the AGM. As saddened as I am not to be able to see out the remaining few months of my final term circumstances are such that it is not possible for me to do so. Due to a combination of reasons (Mark breaking ribs earlier last year, the house being on the market etc) I have been unable to attend Committee Meetings since the last AGM. Needless to say this has caused me much concern not least because I have always felt that if one is unable to discharge one's duties then one should consider their position. Conscious of Rule 13 I wrote to the Secretary at the end of November advising her of my concerns added to which was the possibility that I would not be able to attend the AGM in May because as many of you know Mark and I were hoping to be out of the country at that time. The Secretary responded expressing a full understanding and I allowed myself to be persuaded to remain in position until the AGM.

Regrettably just before Christmas Mark and I were involved in a car accident as a result of which we are still suffering from injuries sustained. For myself I am still experiencing considerable discomfort from whiplash injury to the neck and shoulder which makes driving certainly for long distances extremely difficult as a result of which it is likely I would not be able to make either the Meeting next week or the Club Open Show the following week. Whilst our plans to visit overseas in Spring had been delayed and I would therefore have been able to attend the AGM the recent change of date of this has made it impossible because it now clashes with a previously arranged family function. Under these circumstances since I am not able to carry out my duties there seems little point in my remaining and I believe it best for all concerned that I resolve the position now.

Some nice success for the breed recently. At the Highland Canine Association Open show Aileen Goodwins Imago Kippipeo won BOB and the Toy group at only 13 months of age. Aileen has been a little under the weather lately so I am sure this has given her a boost. At Darlington Limited Show Margaret Sanders took BIS with her Stevedens Royal Prince and at East Of England LKS Shirley Colyer took RBIS with Inixia Perfect Host, the Breed Judge was Josie Mann and BIS Judge Peggy Grayson. Either the location or the BIS judge is lucky for papillons as some years ago Mark and I took a BPIS under Peggy at the Newmarket DCS Two Day Open Show with Jap Ch Nouveau Lord of Misrule. He was in fact a son of Shirley's Shirando Toysoldier.  Sophie Langdon has asked me to mention that the Papillon Club is very keen to encourage Juniors to help at shows. She has been asked to organise junior stewards for the club and would like any juniors who are interested in gaining stewarding experience to contact her as soon as possible. It would be helpful if you could let her know whether you have done any stewarding previously, but if mot do not worry as support and guidance will be available. Sophie can be contacted at  skyvana@hotmail.com At the Papillon Club of America NE Specialty held in New York BIS went to Am Ch Queen Bless Royal Silk bred of course by Chie Yamakado in Japan. What makes this interesting for us in the UK is that Royal SIlk is all English bloodlines. His sire is Jean Leverett's Glasafon Connor and his dam whilst bred in Japan by Chie is by our Jap Ch Nouveau Lord of Misrule out of the late Maurice Gonsalves' Eng and Jap Ch Gonmyn Inspiration. Clearly a combination of lines that has produced well for Chie and has had success in the USA as of course the well known PCA Specialty BIS Winner AM Ch Queen Bless Success Story was similarly bred. He and Royal Silk shared the same sire, and Success Story's mother whilst also bred in Japan was herself another Inspiration daughter this time being by our Eng and Jap Ch Nouveau Lord of the Dance.

Helen Wheeler Acting Secretary of the S Wales Papillon Club has sent the following "Most will now be aware that we were allowed to hold a limited show this year instead of our Open. The date has been set as 3rd April, the AGM is to follow after the show ends. Schedules and papers for the meeting are being sent to members this week and will soon be available to download from our website at www.southwalespapclub.co.uk

The venue is a new one and is in Caerwent Community Centre 20 mins from the old bridge and near to the Crick venue, so come along and have your say.
for further details contact me on helen@wheelsie.freeserve.co.uk "

Also I have had the following message from Carolyne Allward-Chebsey: "Would you please note that The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Clubs A.G.M will now take place on the 29th May 2005 and not as stated in the Preliminary Notice that appeared in the Christmas issue of the Newsletter. The venue stays the same. Items and proposals for the agenda along with nominations for the Committee from fully paid up members are to be with me not later than 15th March 2005 as per the Preliminary Notice." And another from Bubbles Wood-Davis, "I am sorry to advise you all that, due to various reasons, our Chairman Mr.Foster has tendered his resignation to take effect immediately. It is unfortunate Mr. Foster has been unable to complete his term ofoffice but I am sure you will join with me in sending our thanks and best wishes for the future to him and his partner Mark. Until a new Chairman is elected at the A.G.M, I shall undertake Mr Foster's place in the Committee." I have spoken to Mike and he is very sad that he is not going to be able to see out his full term of office. As you know he and Mark had a car accident before Christmas and I am sorry to say that it is taking far longer to overcome the after effects than was first thought. Mark has again sufferred broken ribs and Mike is in great pain due to his whiplash injuries making it very difficult for him to drive and so attending necessary meetings are not really possible. Add to that the fact that they are in the process of searching for a property in Spain to retire to and this has to take priority. I know that the Club will miss Mikes hard work and dedication but their Health and the future must come first and I am sure that the Members of the Club will appreciate his looking after their affairs over the last years of his office.

As you all know Jo Davidson- Poston had a dog stolen from her Mother's garden and she has sent me the following information: "This week Sparky is mentioned in the Feb 17th Edition of Pick me up, where they are covering the topic of "Missing" dogs. Suddenly people are becoming more aware of the possibilities that dog theft is actually happening more often than people realise. Keep your dogs safe and your eyes open. Here is a description of a van belonging to travellers based near Castleford, Yorks, which has been used in a large number of dog thefts. It is operating from a site which appears to be a no-go area. The thieves are quite brazen and have snatched dogs from people who were out walking them. This transit is hand painted blue, with black round the bottom. It has windows in the back but they are also painted over. This is quite obvious and cannot be mistaken for those with window shapes that are not really windows, if you know what I mean. It also has custom built cages in the back, and looks like a kennels van. The thieves have been mostly taking staffies recently (according to the RSPCA for breeding and selling rather than fighting) but of course all dogs are vulnerable."

I have just been told that a copy of The Millenium Book Of The Papillon has just been sold on Ebay for £172.89!!
