Carolyne Allward Chebsey has asked me to mention that it appears that some of the Newsletters recently sent out to Club Members did not have postage on them as a result of which some members may have had to pay a surcharge on these. The problem lies with the Post Office with whom the Club has an a arrangement that they would frank these, an arrangement for which the Club pays well, and it seems they have missed some of the envelopes. If you have had to pay extra postage please keep the card which the Royal Mail will have left you and contact Carolyne. Carolyne is not sure what she can do for Overseas Members who may have been affected other than to apologise, needless to say the Club will go back to the old method of sticking stamps on the envelopes.

I was sorry to hear that Mrs Lynne Connell of the Larvik Papillon in Australia is very ill. Lynne of course was kind enough to donate some lovely sashes for the CC Winners for the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's 80th Anniversary Championship Show last year. I am sure it would help cheer her up immensely if folk were to send her a card, and I am sure the lucky winners of the sashes last year would want to. These should be sent to Mrs Lynne Connell, 34 Nelson Terrace, Alice Springs, NT 0870,  Australia

At the South Wales Papillon Club Championship Show, Dog CC and BIS went to Dolly Kavanagh's Ir Ch Serenglade Gold Sovereign ( Denemore Treasure Chest at Inixia out of Snowlord La Bamba for Serenglade) I believe his second, Bitch CC and RBIS to Sue Morrell and Thesbina Teague's recently crowned Ch Serenglade Enchanted Lady for Temelora, bred by Linda Greenslade she is by Kingshaven Rooney at Serenglade out of Serenglade Serene. Reserves went in dogs to Sue and Thesbina's Snowlord High Society for Temelora, he is by Serenglade Solitaire out of Pilipalas Minuet and in bitches to Carolyn and David Roe's Gleniren Scarlet Signing to Sunshoo bred by Irene and Glenn Robb and by Daneview Rhythm and Blues out of Sunshoo Imascarlet Erika at Gleniren. Scarlet Signing was also Best Puppy.

The Secretary of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club has asked me to mention Judges names are required for the Club's three shows in 2007 and Members of the Club are reminded that they can put forward suggestions to the Committee for these. When putting forward a name, you should ensure that the person you are nominating is/would be eligible to judge the show(s) and are on the Breed Club's Judging lists. For the 2007 Championship show one judge is to be an all rounder and one a specialist, names put forward for the Championship Show will of course be on the ballot for members to have the final vote and announced at the 2005 AGM. Please pass any suggested names forward either to the Club Secretary or to a Member of the Committee.

Carolyne Allward Chebsey has also asked me to mention in her capacity as Newsletter Editor that the principal winners at the recent Club Open Show should let her have a suitable photograph of their dog if they wish a picture to appear in the next Newsletter with the Show Report. These are needed by the end of October, but please let Carolyne know as soon as possible if you wish to have your dog's photo included. As you will have all read in the last Newsletter all photos reproduced must be provided by the exhibitor so as to ensure no one feels unhappy about the photograph used. Also anyone who has made up a champion since the last issue should send a photo of their dog together with a three generation pedigree to Carolyne so that they can be included as well. If you don't send them in then they cannot be included which would be a shame as many people like to keep these for their own records. Articles or stories etc are also needed, these can be sent to Carolyne by e-mail if required at Carolyne@lorahspaps.co.uk

I understand from Ron Stewart who is organising the Four Breed Super March that the response from Papillons has been disappointing, so far only 4 paps have entered. Sadly Mark and I won't be able to get there but hopefully there will be a few more papillons who will. There is still time to enter of course but you should contact Ron as soon as possible. The date of the event is 20 November to take place at the Hanover International Hotel, the day's events will commence at 2.00pm. After the Match, which is on a knock out basis there will be a break and then a dinner starting at 7.00pm, those wishing to stay at the hotel overnight will be able to get special rates. To qualify for entry a dog must have won a CC or Reserve CC or three Firsts in Crufts qualifying classes between Richmond 2003 and Birmingham City 2004. Ron's telephone number is 01373 461776

Ann Richardson asks me to mention that anyone wishing to take their caravan or motorhome to the Northern and Eastern Counties Championship Show in November can get free facility for parking over night but you should contact her by telephone or e-mail so she can explain the arrangements to you. Her telephone number is 01642 724161 and her e-mail richardson.ann08@btinternet.com.   Also anyone wanting a map to the venue can get one from Secretary John Edson (telephone  01757 268213 or e-mail jaedson@onetel.net.com

As some of you will know the Phalene has undergone quite a revival in the USA and there are  a number of breeders over there dedicated to strengthening the interest in the variety. It is intended to publish a Book to be called " Phalene Fancier's New Millennium Pictorial" This is intended to be documented pictorial of the Phalene in colour and would include as well as a photo of individual phalenes, details of their name, height, weight, sex country of breeder and owner along with a three generation pedigree. Anyone with a phalene is welcome to have their dog included, their is no charge as I understand it for this although obviously there will be a charge to purchase the book. Anyone interest can get more information on the Internet by going to http://phalenes.com  and follow down to the link "New Millennium Pictorial".

It is intended also that the book will include an article from as many countries as possible relating to phalene breeding in that country and I have been asked to contribute to this. I have explained to the authors that frankly I don't feel I am experienced enough to write about breeding phalenes and with few exceptions there are not many breeders here in the UK who actually have a proven line of phalenes or breed for them. However the purpose of the article is not only to cover breeding but also to cover other challenges the phalene faces in various countries and in this I feel I can assist. What I would like to do is to provide an article with the input of anyone who feels they have some experience in breeding phalenes or showing phalenes and who would like to give their views so if anyone is interested could they please contact me.

The weather was certainly far from kind for us at Driffield, having started judging outside it soon was necessary to retreat under canvas which was a pity as the inside ring was far from suitable I thought. Apart from the wet grass which was rather long and made grooming before almost a waste of time, the ring itself was rather small given the size of many of the classes. Indeed in some of the classes it was almost impossible to squeeze between exhibitors packed as closely as we were. I know show organisers have lots of things to consider but really when you are paying £20 or so an entry the least you can hope for is sufficient room to be able to show your dog (especially if you have a free standing breed). Bitch CC and BOB went to Jo Davidson-Poston's recently crowned Ch Spinillons Touch of Heather (Ir Ch Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons ex Daneview Dainty Blue Bonnet), Dog CC to Jenny Scovell's again recently crowned Ch Caswell Classic Tri (Caswell Copper Charmer ex Ch Caswell Coppatina). Reserves went in dogs to our Nouveau Less Is More (Tippitoes Lucky Break at Nouveau ex Nouveau Light Up The SKY) and in bitches to Irene and Glenn Robb's Gleniren Scarlet Signature (Daneview Rythm And Blues ex Sunshoo Imascarlet Erika at Gleniren. Scarlet Signature also took Best Puppy.

At the Swiss International Show Best Dog and BOB went to UK import Ch Genvieves Flirtie Bertie who was of course bred by Mr and Mrs Stone and is now owned by Mrs Abeloos-Devros

Details of the Christmas Cracker Day which the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club is holding on 4 December are now out, those on line can view these from the Club web site at http://www.papillonclub.co.uk just follow the link from the home page. Alternatively you can get full details from Carolyne Allward Chebsey tel 01543 256394. It is hoped as many members and friends as possible will attend there is a lot of entertainment planned and it promises to be an enjoyable day. It is being held at the Graham Adams Centre, St James Road, Southam Coventry and starts at 1.00pm and will finish around 6.00pm.

I was sorry to hear that Linda Greenslade had lost two of her older dogs, two who have had quite an impact on the Serenglade's, Serenglade Symphony who Linda lost a couple of weeks ago at  17 years of age and Serenglade Silvanus who she lost on 17 October and who was 14 years old. Symphony, the black and white phalene most of us will remember from her successes in the ring, taking her first Reserve CC in 1991 she achieved even more fame by taking the Reserve CC at Crufts, she was the first phalene since the 1920's as far as I am aware to achieve such success in the ring. Silvanus whilst less well known in the show ring had proved himself to be a very successful sire and is behind most of the successful Serenglade dogs in the ring at the present time..

Our Dogs

As you all know I judged at Driffield Ch Show on Sunday, moving inside to a spacious indoor ring after two classes as the wind was so cold and the rain intermittant. My BCC and BOB was Jo Davidson- Poston's Ch Spinillons Touch Of Heather,  RBCC and B Puppy was Irene and Glen Robb's Gleniren Scarlet Signature.  DCC was Jenny Scovell's Ch Caswell Classic Tri and RDCC was Mark Billinghurst and Mike Foster's Nouveau Less Is More.  I would like to thank my exhibitors for such a large quality entry and special thanks to my wonderful stewards without whom I would not have coped!!

So many people have said that they would like to know what I thought of the breed after nearly four years of not seeing a Ch entry.so here goes!  Personally I felt that the breed was in very good heart.  There were not so many variations in size, quality was high and I found no bad mouths or temperaments. Yes, there were a few coarse heads and long forefaces, some hind movement was erratic and a few fronts left a lot to be desired.  But I stress these were in the minority and I found most were typical and typey and to my great pleasure I found that the texture and feel of the great majority of coats fitted the standard.  I really enjoyed my day and it was good to see so many familiar faces again.

Cheryl Lockett sends information about Lynne Connel of the Larvik Paps in Australia, she is still very ill and has been moved to Alice Springs Hospital, Gap Rd, Alice Springs NT 0870 Australia.  Cheryl has also sent the winners at the Swiss Int Ch Show on 16th Oct, BD & BOB was Ch Genivieves Flirty Bertie bred by the Stones and now owned by Elisa Abeloos-Devros  BB was Ch Arzillo All Night Long The only Phalene there and who was BOB was Benjiboy De Costalina sired by Int Ch Antony and out of Kingshaven Nuarra de Costalina.

Linda Greenslade has sadly lost Serenglade Silvanus(Bobby)  who died peacefully in his sleep aged 14 yrs.  He was the foundation of most of the Serenglades in the ring at the present time and Sue Morrell tells me that he is behind their Sebastian, S San Vitalia  and their Wallace. Silvanis was a lovely dog who has made his mark on the breed

A reminder that the Papillon Club is holding its Christmas Cracker Day on Saturday 4th December at the Graham Adams Centre, Southam from 1pm to 6pm For more information contact Carolyne Allward-Chebsey

I was recently contacted by a lady from Whitstable in Kent regarding an elderly papillon which her sister had found wandering the streets. This lady, Allison Shhosmith who shows Standard Poodles is a good friend of our nearest neighbour who shows Beardies who had happened to mention our interest in papillons to her. Allison is herself involved in poodle rescue so knew a number of routes to go down including posting information on a lost dogs web site and meantime had taken the papillon in and was caring for it. I had offered to get our Rescue people to contact her and to place information on Papnet and the Club web site but Allison asked me to wait until she had firstly taken him to her vet for a check up and secondly finished telephoning around all the local vets. Anyway subsequently Allison came back to me to tell me she had in fact managed to trace the owner, it appears the dog was in fact a rescue anyway which the owner had taken in some five years or so ago and it was believed the dog was about 14 years old. The owner had been told it was a chi but he looked to me from the pictures to more likely be a papillon, he had managed to get out of the garden because someone had foolishly left a gate open and Allison gave the owner a good telling off for being careless.  Fortunately the story had a happy ending but I would like to thank Allison for all she did, it is good to know there are folk around like her.

At the All Ireland Bull Breeds BOB & GSD went to Dolly Kavanagh's Serenglade Gold Sovereign, GSB to Diane Mooney's Omaonaig Flame of Tara, RGSD to  Killeen-King,Switzerand Greiffe's Pilipalas Greig and RGSB to Mrs Stone's Serenglade Leah Liltie.

It's always nice to hear of someone new to papillons doing well and Joanna Green tells me that Sarah Hesketh has been having quite a bit of success with her first papillon, Rimzim Joshua Inch Perfect. Although Joanna sold him as a pet he has already taken his KC Good Citizenship Bronze and Silver Awards with very little training and at the recent South Of England Toydog Show he passed his Gold Award and also took 1st in Obedience Pre Beginners. Just for fun Sarah entered him in the Breed Classes and he also took a 1st in Junior Dog, he is just 13 months old.

At the North of England Toydog Show on 23 October, Estelle Kirk's Kirkchase Bewished took BOB and went on to take BIS, a good week for her as later that week she won a large Open Bitch class at Driffield.

Phil Shirley has asked me to mention the following, the Breed Seminar organised by the South of England Papillon Club  will be held on 21st Nov. at New Haw community centre near Woking in Surrey. Starting in the morning you can attend the breed seminar conducted by Veronica Hourihane  with the opportunity to access several dogs ,followed by lunch for £15 , in the afternoon Peter Taylor will be covering the K.C. Rules and Regulations (a requirement for judges wishing to progress up the judging lists), this again with lunch costs £15 , or you can book the complete day:seminar, lunch and Rules and Regs. for £20. Please phone Sue Stanbury on 01392 369759 to reserve your place

Mark and I were delighted to hear from Anthos in Cyprus that Nouveau Island Icon at his second show had taken his second CC and BOB, the CACIB and Group 4. Jean and Roger Banfield have recently been holidaying in Cyprus and had visited Anthos and were kind enough to write and say how happy he was and how attached he had become to Anthos.

Our Dogs

Eilish Neally has sent the winners at the All Ireland Bull Breeds Ch show at Cloghran.  BOB & GSD was Dolly Kavanagh's Ir Ch Serenglade Gold Sovereign, RGSD Killeen-King/Switzer/Grieff's Pilipalas Grieg, GSB Mooney's Omaonaig Flame Of Tara, Stones' Serenglade Leah Liltie.

Congratulations go to Estelle Kirk and her Kirkchase Bewished who went BIS at East of England Toy Dog open Show on 23rd October

At SE Toy Dog Show Jo Davidson-Poston's Ir Ch Ibstock Bright Spark For Spinillons won the Champion Stakes Also at SE Toydog and at his very first show Rimzim Joshua Inch Perfect owned by Sarah Hesketh had a wonderful day.  Purchased from Joanna Green as a pet, he and his devoted owner  won the Pre Beginners Obedience, qualified for their Gold Good Citizen Award and came First in Junior Dog in the beauty classes!!  Hows that for versatility? and he is only 13 months old! Needless to say both Joanna and his owner are delighted.

Still winning is Harlie the Magnificent and Denise Welch.  At a recent Show Harlie stormed home First in Open Agility beating 140 dogs.  Denise says that all they saw of Harlie was the sand she kicked up as she jumped the last fence.  What an amazing little dog!

A reminder from Philip Shirley Secretary of the South of England Papillon Club:
