Some interesting details have come through over the Internet relating to registrations for the breed for last year around the world.  In the UK 708 Papillons (including presumably some Phalenes)  were registered last year, in Finland  293 Papillons and 114 Phalenes, in Sweden 501 Papillons and 118 Phalenes, in France 302 Papillons and 63 Phalenes, in Iceland  10 puppies registered from 3 litters (all Papillons), in Norway 194 Papillons  29 Phalenes, in Denmark  75 Papillons (of which 2 were imported) 13 Phalenes and in the USA 5144 Papillons (including Phalenes).

Recently some enquiries were made about Mrs Anne Katona from the USA who is due to judge the Breed at SKC. I understand Mrs Katona has judged the breed a number of times in the USA and in fact recently judged a Specialty in Nevada. At the lunch following the show she was asked to make some comments on the breed and apparently it was clear she very much enjoys judging papillons. Amongst her comments she spoke about correct bites, being a terrier person it is perhaps to be expected that mouths and construction and soundness will be important to her. Apparently she also commented on double coats, top lines and eye colour and pigment, so now you all now. I always thing a judge from overseas brings a new perspective, and hopefully and unbiased view as to who is on the end of the lead!!!!

Some nice wins for papillons around the country. Jill Terry tells me that although she has had papillons for 10 years or so she has not previously shown them but decided with her last litter to bring them out into the ring.  She took her 9 months old puppy Babrees Mamma Mia to her local show at Isle of Ely, where she won Best AVNSC Toy, Best AVNSC Toy Puppy, Toy Group 2 and Puppy Group 1.

Angela Skelton and Abbeyton Sweet Dream continue there winning ways, her latest success being at the Irvine and District Canine Club open show where she took the Toy Puppy Group.

Sue Morrell and Thesbina Teague had a good day at the Swindon & District Open Show where they took BOB with Snowlord  High Society For Temelora and BPIB with Serenglade Shadow Dancer For Temelora who ended up BPIS.

Pearl Peacock telephoned to tell me she was out of hospital and back at home recuperating after her appendicitis operation. Pearl managed to persuade them to let her home early understandably feeling she would be far happier at home than stick in some hospital ward and I am sure Frank is taking good care of her. Pearl would like to thank everyone for the cards and wishes and was particularly delighted with the flowers she received from the Benevolent Fund. Obviously she won't this year be able to make it to Crufts, Pearl tells me it is the first Crufts she has missed for some 30 years, but is determined to be fit enough to judge bitches at the Club's Championship Show in April.

The South of England Papillon Club is holding a Papillon Sponsored Walk for Charity, in aid of the Macmillan Cancer Relief Fund. It will be held on Sunday 25 April starting at 10.30a.m. along the Berkshire Ridgeway. Sponsorship Forms along with a map etc are available from Anne Borg on 01865 762201. After the walk there will be lunch in the Chievely Village Hall followed by a slide talk/video and the Club's AGM

Pearl Peacock is now home from Hospital and being thoroughly spoiled by Frank!!  She would like to thank every one for their lovely cards and flowers which are all round the house and are giving her great pleasure.  For the first time in 30 years she will not be at Crufts but she is resting and taking things easy in order to be fit for the pap Club Ch Show in April which she is so looking forward to. She hopes that everyone enjoyed their day at Crufts.

Jill Terry took her Babrees Mamma Mia to Isle of Ely Open Show where she won Best AVNSC Toy and Toy Puppy going on to win the Puppy Group and Toy Group 2  Jill was very thrilled as she has rarely shown her Papillons

Sophie had her first judging appointment at East of Scotland CC Open Show where she made the Lieper's Graycaz Give It Up For Thello BOB and thanks everyone for their kindness and hospitality and the friendly atmosphere at the show.

The South of England Papillon Club's Newsletter carries a picture of the winner of the Club/Badge Logo and very attractive it is.  Designed by Sue Obbard who also designed the Club's lovely Christmas Card it depicts a sweet headed B/W Papillon looking out of a red circle which carries the Club name.  It is most attractive and I look forward to having mine when they are ready.

The Schedule for the Club's first Open Show came with the Newsletter It will be on Saturday 22nd May at Chievley Recreation Centre Nr Newbury Berks with Jenny Scovell Judging  and JH and Welfare Classes will be judged by Jenny Casey  Entries close on 26th April and should go to Philip Shirley 37 Chorley Ave Saltdean Brighton E Sussex BN2 8 AQ

Unfortunately I have only just received the news that on Sunday 7 March Malcolm Green will have celebrated his 80th Birthday. Malcolm. whose wonderful drawings have decorated the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's Newsletters for so  long and is  a life Member of the Club, has been a little under the weather lately so we do hope that he had a wonderful day of celebrations.

Crufts is over again for another year and now everyone can start the scramble to qualify for next year. As most know Crufts is not one of my favourite shows, indeed for a number of reasons it is probably my least favourite, but I appreciate that for many there is a special feeling for the show. This year it seems, for our breed at least, the show went off without too many problems. The BOB made it to the Group and it would seem in other activities there were some successes for the breed.

Dog CC and BOB went to Jenny Scovell's Caswell Classic Tri, his first CC, he has a number of Reserve CC's to his credit, one of which was given to him by the Crufts judge at City of Birmingham 2002. Home bred of course, he is by Caswell Copper Charmer out of  Ch Caswell Coppatina. Reserve Dog CC went to Carine Rutten's Ch Anthony, sired by  Connection Coronation Card out of Pamparix Charmant Blanche. Interestingly these two took the CC and Reserve CC at Manchester last month, there Anthony took the CC and Classic Tri the Reserve. In bitches  it was a second CC for Jo Davidson-Poston's Spinillons Touch of Hope, her first having come at Bath last year, she is by Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons Sh CM out of Anncolm Love In A Mist at Spinillons. Reserve Bitch CC also went to Carine Rutten with her Up And Down's Donna Bella, a daughter of Anthony out of Rashana van Golden Sinja. Best Puppy went to Sue Stanbury with Inixia Troysdale Time Traveller.

Philip Shirley was delighted with his Cordonrouge Cameo taking 1st Place in Junior Bitch this giving her her Junior Warrant. What made it particularly pleasing is that Cameo broke her leg just three months ago. To be back in the ring so quickly is a tribute to the Vet certainly and I am sure Phil must be so relieved after the worry of having this happen when she was winning so well in the ring.

Crufts proved to be a very successful day for Glenn Robb who with Ch Kingshaven Principal Boy at Gleniren won the YKC Stakes Final under Mr Albert Wight. In the YKC triathlon finals I am told a young lady by the name of Ashley (sorry don't have the surname) put on a superb performance with her papillon taking 4th overall, beaten only by I believe border collies. Sophie Langdon apparently also took a second place in one of the obedience finals, this time however not with a papillon but with a border collie. Emma McLaughlin too took a second place, in the National Handler of the Year with her papillon, and in the  triathlon was going great guns with her collie who then proceeded to the amusement of the ringside to wash his face in the middle of his performance!!! Congratulations to all who had a good day, and to those who did not well of course there is always next year.

The only complaint I heard so far about the show was the rather loud noise from the tannoy and I understand one breed was rather incensed by it. It seems this came from the main ring and one can understand there are problems when coordinating a number of events. Nonetheless perhaps these sudden loud bursts of music are not particularly helpful especially if your dog is just about to be seen and maybe something can be done about this.

I am sorry to have to report that Norma Staff has been far from well and currently is in hospital. I understand from Pat that Norma has been suffering with a chest infection that is proving rather obstinate. At the time of writing she is in Clark Ward at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Ramsay Road, Winchester. Let us hope  that by the time these notes are out she is back home and feeling better and it may perhaps be best if folk wishing to send cards send them care of Pat in the hopes that Norma will be back home.

The South Of England Papillon Club will be holding its first Open Show on Saturday 22 May at the Chieveley Recreation Centre, Newbury, Berks. The judge for this first ever show for the Club will be Jenny Scovell and I am sure the committee will have been delighted that Jenny has taken on this appointment. Jenny's Caswells are of course one of the most successful kennels of all times in the breed and it it rather fitting that she should be judging the first ever Show for the Club.  Entries close on 26 April so plenty of time to contact Philip Shirley if you have not had a schedule, his telephone number is 01273 304865

Denise Beausher has advised me that papillon club member Mrs Brenda Rowlands from Anglesey passed away on 9 February. The funeral was held on 13 February. Although a  relative newcomer to papillons Brenda adored her dogs and loved showing. She was only 47 years old and will be sorely missed by her friends and especially by Denise. Our condolences go to husband Elwyn and son Gari who is just 12 years old at this sad time.

Our Dogs
Veronica Hourihane was the Judge at Crufts and out of her large entry she selected as BOB and DCC Jenny Scovell's Caswell Classic Tri while her RCC was Miss Rutten's Int Ch Antony over from Holland.  BCC was a second CC for Jo Davidson-Poston's Spinillons a Touch Of Hope and RBCC also went to Miss Rutten with her Ups And Downs Donna Bella.  Best Puppy was Sue Stanbury's Inixia Troysdale Time Traveller

One notable win was that of Sp Junior Bitch Philip Shirley's Cordonrouge Cameo who completed her JW just three month after breaking her leg what a good Vet Phil must have!! The Two Good Citizen Classes had an entry of 5 and 8 respectively, the dog winner being Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons and the Bitch Marge Wiggins' Murvagh Rippling Stream The Veterans were Dog, Ch Inixia Artful  Andrew at 13 and Bitch, Ch Caswell Coppatina a former Crufts CC winner now 9yrs.

Judging started at 0830 and the judging proceeded steadily and thoroughly, the judge taking 15/20 mins for a break and finished with about an hour to spare.  So the early start seemed to be the answer this year.

Sadly Norma Staff was absent this year as she was taken into Hospital rather poorly with a chest infection  she is in Clark Ward of the Royal Hampshire Hospital Ramsey Rd Winchester.  I am sure that some cards would cheer her up and it would be best to send these to Pat who will see that Norma gets them.  Hopefully she will be home again soon.

Glenn Robb and Beckham(Ch Kingshaven Principal Boy at Gleniren) had a wonderful win when, having won the Toy Final went on to win the YKC Stakes Final under Mr Albert Wight.  Congratulations to Glenn and Irene and not to mention Beckham!!!

Pearl Peacock is progressing well after her operation and is now looking forward to judging at the Pap Club Ch Show in April.

Rosemary and David Ayris have had to say goodbye to their beloved dog Daneview A Gordon For Me at Ibstock, He was 16yrs old and grandsire to many winners. He had been suffering little strokes for weeks and eventually the decision had to be made.  Rosemary and David are missing him so much,  It is so hard to loose one that has been part of one's life for so long. My sympathies go to you both

I got my South of England Papillon Club Badge today and it is just as attractive as it looked in the illustration.  I have been asked to print the following: " A Sponsored Toy Dog Walk in aid of the Macmillan Cancer Fund will be held on 25th April 2004 on the Ridgeway near West Isley(Newbury, Berks., just off the A34) starting 10.30 a.m.  Walk as much or as little of the course as you like! (Walking shoes advisable but walking quite easy) Hot lunch obtainable afterwards(12.45p.m.) at Chieveley Village Hall approx Six miles from the Ridgeway, provided by the S o E Papillon Club at £5 per head; followed by a talk, if you are interested called 'Papillons Do Other Things', which shows the breed participating in Search and Rescue in the Welsh Mountains, doing Water Rescue(!), being Hearing Dogs for the Deaf, doing Agility and many other clever things! - illustrated by slides and videos.  The Club's first AGM will follow this , at 3 p.m.

Sponsor forms(and map) obtainable from Anne Borg (24 Wilberforce St. Headington Oxford OX3 7AN -phone 01865 762201) Get as many sponsors as you can for as many dogs as you have!!  ALL TOY DOGS WELCOME to join the Papillons! Have a Fun Day out while collecting for a Good Cause!"

Congratulations to Carole and Gerry Stone on the birth of a son Elliott on Sunday 10 March.  Carole and Elliott, who weighed in at 9lb 10 oz are doing well

At the Papillon Club of Scotland Open Show, Best Dog and BIS went to Miss P Taylor's Northlyte Star Appeal with BPIS going to Jim Ness and Hilary Byer's Chappell Tango Two.

Following on from his success at Crufts where he took the Reserve Dog CC, Carine Rutten's Int & Multi Ch Anthony added yet further success to his long list of awards. At a special show where all winners of Group 1, 2 and 3 awards over the year were invited to compete. Anthony, who has during 2003 won 6 Groups, has twice been Group 2 and three times BIS, ended up winning the Toy Group again and thus becomes Toydog of the year 2003 in Holland. The first time such an award has gone to a Papillon.

Joan Wheeler asks me to mention that the South Wales Papillon Club Year Book 2004 will be out shortly, she still has a little work to do on this but hopefully all will soon be completed.

One other notable success for the breed I picked up from Dog World's Crufts report was that of Dawn Weaver with her phalene Tonring Just William who took third place in the Mini Agility Challenge. We have some very nice pictures of William competing in agility on the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's web site.

A note from Kim McKay in Canada tells me that BIS BISS Am.Can.CH. Brentville The Entertainer At Tussalud bred of course by Brenda Taylor took his second All Breed BIS recently and that whilst not all the results are in he will Number 1 Papillon in Canada for 2003 and either Number 4 or 5 Toy dog.

Ron Stewart, who is organising the Super Match Challenge between Papillons, Affenpinschers, Pugs and King Charles Spaniels to take place in November at what promises to be a most enjoyable event, has asked me to mention that entry forms are now available from him. You can contact him on ron.katestewart@btopenworld.com  , or 'phone 01373 461776. He tells me that amongst the many prizes etc on offer Harrods will be providing the raffle prizes!!!! Don't forget that qualification to take part in the Challenge is to win :-a) a CC, b) a RCC, c) a BP, d) 3 x First places all between Richmond 2003 and City of Birmingham (August 2004 ).

Janet McKay (Jaylanjay) judged the Scottish (Butterfly Dog) Club of Scotland Open Show on 14th.  BIS and BD was Pam Taylor's Northlyte Star Appeal and RBIS &BB went to Mabel  McDonald's Fortglen Shadow Dancer.  BPIS was Jim Ness & Hilary Byers' Chappell Tango Two.

Malcolm Green had his 80th Birthday two weeks ago and he and Johanna were so pleased to receive a lovely azalea potted plant from the Papillon Club.  They had a very enjoyable family gathering and wish me to thank the Club for their lovely gift.

Congratulations to Carole and Gerry Stone who have just become the parents of Elliott, a 9lb 10ozs baby boy.  Mother and baby are doing well.

Joan Wheeler says that the South Wales Papillon Club's Year Book 2004 will be out shortly.  I am sure all are looking forward to it.
