At Birmingham City the Dog CC and BOB went to Graycaz in the Red bred by Caroline Lee Farnsworth and owned jointly by Caroline and Miss C Brookfield, I believe this is his first CC. Bitch CC went to Carolyn and David Roe's Ch Sunshoo Imastar Lighter, Reserves were Irene and Glenn Robb's Gleniren Scarlet Monogram in dogs and Messrs J W & G Turner's Kingshaven Truly Scrummy For Bodebi in bitches. A particularly pleasing win for the Turner brothers, better known for their Affenpinschers, I believe their first 'green card' on papillons. Best Puppy was Mrs S Thompson , Mrs J Austin's Jhanakia Highland Breeze.

I gave details last week of SKC results, I have now had further news on the bitch CC Jeanette MacKay's  Jaylanjay Amanother. She is sired by  Geanzger Avon Prince At Jaylanjay and is in fact a repeat mating to Jeanette's Jaylanjay Amastunner J.W. who has had quite a successful show career himself. On the day of SKC she was just a week over nine months old which is of course very young and it would be interesting to learn if anyone knows the youngest age a papillon has been to receive a CC. I can think of quite a number of puppies that have gained CC's over the years. Amanother has had a number of successes to her short show career, included in which were Best Toy Puppy at Banff, Murray & Nairn Canine Open Show at just 6 months and 3 days, as well as a number of other Best Toy Puppies in Show and a BPIS at Caithness Canine Open Show.

Two of our Breed Clubs are arranging Seminars. The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club has a Seminar on Sunday 19 October this year to be held at The Stoneythorpe Hotel, Leamington Spa commencing at 9.00 a.m. . It will cover the Breed Standard, confirmation and movement and will include hands on experience. Cost for the whole day will be £17.50 to include morning coffee, three course lunch and afternoon tea. Diplomas will be given at the Seminar. There are I believe a few places still left but contact David Roe quickly  on 01522 686737 if you want to be included.

Later on Sunday 4 January 2004 the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club is holding a KC Rules and Regulations Seminar at Finningley Village Hall, near Doncaster where the KC Accredited Trainer will be our own Peter Taylor. It will commence at 9.30 am tickets cost £12.50 to include morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea. For more details contact Queenie Bruce on 01302 770847

These Seminars are essential for anyone interested in progressing their judging career so please give them both your support.

I was delighted to hear that in agility Dawn Weaver and Dreamer (Tongring Just William) managed to qualify for Olympia last weekend, what makes this more pleasing is that Dreamer is a phalene and probably the first phalene to do so. Many congratulations to them both. Those of you with internet access can see some lovely agility pictures, including Dreamer, on the Club's web site at http://www.papillonclub.co.uk

Two pieces of sad news I am afraid. News has just reached me that Arthur Mountford, a long time member of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club passed away just before Christmas.  Our belated condolences are being sent to Jessie, his wife and their son Terry, who also have a love for the breed, and an obituary will appear in the next Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Newsletter. Our condolences also go to Sue Victor and family who have recently lost Sue's mother.
The Joint Bichon Frise Clubs are holding a Festival Weekend  on 20/21 September at the Events Field, Billing Aquadrome, Northampton. What you may ask has this to do with Papillons, well included in the very well filled two day schedule of events is a 'Teach In' covering How to go over and judge a Bichon and How to go over and judge a Papillon, this to take place on the Sunday Morning. This however is not the only thing of interest to Papillon folk, the first day will include a Companion Dog Show and all Toy Breeds are welcome to participate. The Judge for this will be Ben Ashcroft (Eschencof) Young Kennel Club Representative. On the second day, as well as the teach in and a General Question and Answer Session there will be in the afternoon a number of fun activities in which both Bichons and Papillons are welcome to participate , including a parade of champions, puppy walk, novelty classes etc and a variety of auctions and raffles throughout the two days.

Caravan and Tent Pitches are available at a cost of £9 per night with full facilities available including hook ups and there is a Motel just outside the gates of the park for those without caravans. A Marquee is available in case of inclement weather and apparently the staff (presumably of the Aquadrome) have offered to throw a party on the Saturday night. It promises to be a very enjoyable weekend, certainly there is far more on offer than I can given in these notes, and I do hope that there will be a hood representation for the breed. Further details can be obtained from the Secretary of the Bichon Frise Club of Great Britain, John Reynolds on 01527 517116

At Richmond Ch Show Arthur Houghton found his BOB and DCC in Caroline Lee-Farnsworth's Ch Graycaz Green Is Envy who went on to be Group 4, RDCC was Water's Glasafon Jiggery Poke and BCC went to the Bartram's Ch Burghbridge Our Princess,  RBCC was Patricia Grieff's Pilapalas Eroica,  Best Puppy was Philip Shirley's Cordonrouge Cameo.

Emma McLoughlin was the winner of the 12-16 yrs JH Toy Group Semi Finals at Richmond and her mother Sue Victor writes that her grandmother, whom they lost after a seven week battle in intensive care, would have been so proud of her - she was Emma's No 1 fan.  More credit to Emma for doing so well at must have been a very distressing and emotional time for her and her family.

Jeanette MacKay who is probably  our most Northern Competitor has had a wonderful run of wins with her Jaylanjay Amanother who won the BCC at SKC just aweek out of Minor Puppy, she is a repeat mating of her top winning Junior Warrant winner Jaylanjay Amastunner and  was Best Toy Puppy at Banff, Moray& Nairn CS, Dundee C and again at Caithness where she went BPIS. Best of luck for the future of both these young dogs, Jeanette!

Sorry about the lack of notes last week, I am afraid I forgot what day it was and missed the deadline. Whether that's a sign of old age or having too much to do I am not sure!!!!

A correction to early notes, Graycaz in the Red in winning the CC recently at Birmingham was taking his second (not first CC - the first having come at WELKS where he also took Group 4.

At Richmond Championship Show Dog CC and BOB went to Carolyn Lee Farnsworth's Ch Graycaz Green Is Envy who went on take Group 4 in what was a very strong Toy Group. Bitch CC went to Liz and Alan Bartram's Ch Burghbridge Our Princess with Reserves going to Miss I L Waters' Glasafon Jiggery Poke in dogs and Patricia Grieff's Pilipalas Eroica in bitches. Best Puppy was Philip Shirley's Cordonrouge Cameo. The two CC winners and BP winner's details I have given previously, the Reserve CC winners I don't believe I have. Jiggery Poke, bred of course by Jean Leverett is by Glasafon Successor out of Glasafon Lynbank Bizzie Lizzie and Eroica, home bred, is by Pilipalas Othello's Cello out of Bonifee Sweet Charity for Pilipalas

Young  Emma McLoughlin won the Junior Handling semi finals 12 - 16 years Toy Group competition at Richmond  and will now be competing in the National Final, held in conjunction with the Pedigree Masterfoods Stakes finals, next January.  I am sure this win will have given Emma and Sue Victor and all the family a boost after the sadness of losing Sue's mother recently. Needless to say it was quite an emotional day for them all at Richmond and both are very appreciative of the kindness and support given by their fellow papillon exhibitors.

At Darlington it was a first CC and BOB (so I am assured!!!) for Anne MacGregor's Pyatshaw White Heat (Northlyte Adonis Blue out of Noljo Zodiac) with the Botch CC going to Mrs Woodrow's Ch Lynflyer Perfect Lady. Reserves went to Irene and Glenn Robb's Ch Kingshaven Principal Boy at Gleniren in dogs and Carolyn and David Roe's Ch Sunshoo Imastar Lighter in bitches. Best Puppy was Chriskadu Black Sapphire by Rayol ( Chriskadu Black Fashion out of Chachorra Ellensburg Blue at Rayol)  owned jointly by Eileen Roberts and Miss C Smith and bred by Chris Pougher.

Helen Verity had a super day at Darlington with her Macstrak Minuet JW (owned jointly with her mother)  winning the the Darlington Special Beginners Stakes Dog and also taking 3rd place in the Designer dogs & Cats Stakes class. With £25 prize money for the win and £15 for the third place a good result. Added to which Minuet went on to get his Kennel Club Good Citizen Bronze Award.

I recently mentioned Jeanette MacKay's  Jaylanjay Amanother winning the CC at SKC at just a week over none months of age and asked if anyone knew the youngest age at which a papillon had won a CC. SO far the youngest I have heard of is Anna McKnight's  Ch. Dainty Eulana of Daneview won her first CC at 7 months and 2 days under Brian Mitchell, at the Papillon Club of Scotland Championship Show on 9th September 1979. So unless any knows different it would appear Eulana holds the record.

I have mentioned several times in these notes, and also in the Club Newsletter, that I am still awaiting photos of a number of champions to complete the Hall of Fame on the Club's web site. Unless folk let me have these photos then I am afraid their dog or bitch simply won't feature fully on the site. A shame but if people cannot be bothered then I am afraid it is their own fault, I simply don't have the time (and less and less the inclination) to make unanswered pleas. My thanks to those few who have had the courtesy to contact me

Brenda Taylor judged at Darlington Ch and her BOB and DCC was Mrs Macgregor's Pyatshaw White Heat, the RDCC wasGlenn & Irene Robb's Ch Kingshaven Principal Boy at Gleniren.  BCC went to Lynda Woodrow's Ch Lynflyer Perfect Lady with RBCC being David & Carolyne Roe's Ch Sunshoo Imastar Lighter,  B Puppy was Eileen Roberts & her daughter's Chriskadu Black Sapphire by Rayol.

In the Schedule for the N&E Cos Ch Show to be held on 2nd November at Goole Leisure Centre the judge for Junior Handling should read Mr Mark Whitehill and not Mr JD Simpson as given in the schedule. The Calendar will be available at this show and it is a good idea to book it now from Queenie Bruce I will give details of this years price etc as soon as I get it.

Every one must be relieved that the threat of a postal strike has been removed - the last one caused havoc with Show entries!! What about all you Open Show winners I have not heard much from you recently - don't forget people want to hear news of Open show sucesses as well as the big Ch Shows.

It is with much regret I have to report that Elizabeth Knowles passed away in hospital on Friday 19 September. Elizabeth was for many, many years Adminsitrator of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's Benevolent Fund, indeed I doubt there are many who can remember a time when she was not so having taken on the responsibility in 1967. Many of us will however have benefited by receiving a card or flowers or some such gift at times of being unwell or at a sad time in our lives and over the years she must have brought comfort to many, many members. Up until recently the Benevolent Fund was of course also responsible for the welfare of member's (and non member's) papillons and with the help of a number of other folk, in particular Jean Lawrence, many papillons were found homes through the Benevolent Fund.

Elizabeth was a lady of the old school, one only has to think of her to slip back into the days of 'Miss Marple' when things were perhaps a little more gentle than they are today. Many of us will remember her also for the charming stories of Gertrude, the only papillon I know of to be an author, and a copy of Gertrude I am sure is held on the shelves of all those who collect papillon memorabilia. For a number of years the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club held Garden Parties at the school in Rickmansworth where Elizabeth taught thanks to Elizabeth's participation. One happy memory many will have is of Elizabeth judging the Garden Party Match held by the Club in 1983, its Diamond Jubilee Year.

Elizabeth gave great service to the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club and indeed to the breed itself, whilst not , certainly for a good number of years, an active breeder or exhibitor she was one of those rare people who although having nothing to gain gave her time for the Club and the Breed. For all the work she did, for all the grace with which she did it made her simply irreplaceable and I am sure there are many like me deeply saddened to think that never again will we hear that throaty chuckle on the telephone. The last time I spoke to her, not that ling ago, she had been unwell for some while yet still was more concerned about the health and welfare of others.

The Funeral will be held on 2nd October at St Lucy's Convent, Medstead Hants at 2pm, the Funeral Directors are Messrs Kemp and Stevens, 91 - 95   High Street, Alton Hants. Our condolences go to her family, her daughter Christine will be at the family home until 18 October.

At the Scottish Papillon Club Championship Show Dog CC and BIS went to Ann Borg's Inixia So Be It For Elendil (Inixia Party Pooper out of Azinghar Perfect Bliss At Inixia), bred of course by Sue Stanbury this is I believe his second CC. Bitch CC went to Mrs Woodrow's Ch Lynflyer Perfect Lady (Marshlea Executive out of Ablazzor Muss Bluebell) with reserves going to Anna McKnight's Daneview Rythm And Blues (Ringlands Erik The Red At Sunshoo out of Ch Graycaz Won't You Come Home To Daneview) in dogs and Philip Shirley's Cordonrouge Ciara ((Glasafon Welsh Gold At Cordonrouge out of Cordonrouge Classic Minx) in bitches. Best Puppy was Frasermar Ice Maiden (Ch Martika What's The Story out of Frasermar Snow Storm) owned jointly by Mr & Mrs Comrie and M Whitehill

The Spire Toydog Open Show which will be held on 23 November is putting on a separate class for the phalenes as well as of course papillon classes, the judge will be Miss K Anderson (Northlyte). Eileen Roberts is sponsoring the phalene class and it would be nice to see as many phalenes as possible entered. It is indeed rare for any Open Show to put on separate classes for phalenes, the only other one I know of that does is the South Western Toys. The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Welfare and Rescue Stall will be in attendance so an ideal time to buy some Christmas presents and boost the fund.

Another new competition which has been brought to my notice is that for Junior Warrant Winners and last weekend saw two papillons qualify for the finals which I am told will be held at Discover Dogs in November. Shirley Colyer's Inixia Perfect Host JW qualified at the at the Dunstable and District Caninie Society Open Show and young Neil Leiper's Graycaz Give it up for Thello JW qualified at Perth Canine Club Open Show. Both shows in fact had added success for the breed, at Dunstable Jo Davidson Poston's Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons Sh CM took BOB, Group 1 and also won the Open Stakes. At Perth Rimzim Orlando Graycaz owned jointly by Neil and Caroline Lee Farnsworth also took BOB and Group 1 and this win gave him his final points towards his Show Certificate of Merit. Neil, who is just 10 years old, has handled Orlando himself to all but this last win

News from North America where at the Skaha KC Show Group 1 and BIS went to Kim McKay's Am. Can. Ch Brentville The Entertainer at Tussalud bred by Brenda Taylor and exported by Kay Stewart. This was 'Archie's first BIS win over there and a pleasing one as the Group Judge was Toy Specialist R. William Taylor

Unfortunately a most essential detail was omitted from the advert for the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's Open Show that being of course the name of the judge. In fact it will be Mrs Sue Terry (Virgloshimee), wife of course of our previous Show Manager Dick. Schedules are now available if you have not had yours yet contact David Abbott on 01453 890322, entries close on 15 October.

Our Dogs

I am so sad to have to tell you that Elizabeth Knowles much loved Administrator of the Papillon Club Benevolent Fund passed away peacefully in hospital on Friday 19th September. Elizabeth took over responsibility for the Benevolent Fund in 1967,  it had been started by Lucy Ryder as a friendship Club in 1961 and it was for the care of members as well as dogs.  Many, many people received flowers, pot plants and cards when ill at home or in hospital and with Jean Lawrence's help many dogs were rescued and rehomed.  Elizabeth kept a list of older members who no longer attended shows or who were in Nursing Homes and ensured that they were remembered at Christmas.  She was always available to help or just to listen to one's troubles and always tried to remain non judgemental and neutral in any of the disputes which involved the Club over the years.

Because of our initials, myself, Elizabeth and Mabel Jukes were always benched together and many times we sat together in tents eating our sandwiches while the rain lashed down and we were unable to leave the Ch Shows until 4pm!!  The conversation was always good, Elizabeth and I had both attended Art School and had a lot in common - we kept promising ourselves a trip to the Royal Academy together but never managed it!  At that time she was showing her lovely Lemon/White with black tippings - Andre The Clouded Yellow followed by Mantisfield Midnight from whom she bred the famous Theregos Gertrude who featured in her delightful book 'Gertrude' so ably illustrated by Peter Benson and I think still available from the Club.

Elizabeth taught at a School in Rickmansworth  which had lovely gardens and she obtained permission from the Headmistress to organise a Garden Party for the Club there.  For many years it was a most enjoyable function of our year.  Apart frim various stalls and games it also included a Match and many young successful dogs and exhibitors made their first appearance at the Garden Party Match. I know Elizabeth will be much missed.

Her funeral will be on 2nd October at St Lucy's Convent, Medstead Hants at 2pm, the Funeral Directors are Messrs Kemp and Stevens, 91 - 95   High Street, Alton Hants. Her daughter Christine will be at Elizabeth's house until 18th October  , if you phone leave a message and she will get back to you.  Sincere condolences go to her family.

Elizabeth Patrick Judged at the Scottish Papillon Club Ch Show and her DCC and BIS was Anne Borg and Sue Stanbury's Inixia So Be It For Elendil, RDCC went to Anna MacKnight's    Daneview Rhythm n' Blues.  BCC was Lynda Woodrow's CH Lynflyer Perfect Lady and RBCC was Phil Shirley's Cordonrouge Ciara  B Puppy wasWhitehill & Comries Frasermar Ice Maiden.`

Now some Congratulations are due first to Lynda Stangle and Hemdale Alex The Avenger who won Intermediate agility at Bromsgrove Agility Show - this win now makes him a Senior. Well Done!  Next, to Douglas and Shirley Colyer and Inixia Perfect Host who won the heat of the JW final at Dunstable and to Neil Lieper and Graycaz Give It Up For Thello who also won their JW heat at PerthCS,

At Dunstable Jo Davidson-Poston and Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons Sh CM won  BOB,Group 1 and the Open Stakes.  At Perth Neil and Caroline Lee-Farnsworth's Rimzim Orlando Graycaz was BOB and Group1 and they gave him the final points for his Show Certificate of Merit

Spire Toy Dog Show is to schedule a Phalene class sponsored by Eileen Roberts and judged by Karen Anderson( Northlyte) on 23rd November in Belper  The Papillon Club Rescue Stall will also be there to help you with your Christmas Shopping!
