Dog World

The funeral of Kathy Blayney took place on 2 June at the Isle of Wight Crematorium. There was a very large attendance and the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club was represented by Pat Munn. Also in attendance were Club Members Carol Wilson and her husband Martin, Pat Cox, Pat Munn and Val Etheridge.

At the Papillon Club of Ireland Championship Show held on 31 May the Dog Green Star and BIS went to Jo Davidson-Poston's Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons, bred of course by Rosemary and David Ayris. Bitch GS was  Mr & Mrs Pearson's Tedlyn Twilight Breeze, Reserves went to Mrs Kilpatrick's Sonsirae Right N Royal in dogs and Irene Waters' GB Ch Vella Ennis, bred by the late Tini James, in bitches. BPIS was Mr Dillon's Oldcourt Pretty Woman.

On the same day the Irish Toydog Championship Show was held where again the DGS and BOB went to Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons who was pulled out to the last four for BIS. Bitch GS was GB CH. Vella Ennis and Reserves went to Dolly Kavanagh's Denemore Treasure Icon in dogs and Jo's Spinillons A Touch of Hope in bitches. There was I understand no BPIB award or indeed BPIS however Miss Clarkes Austrene Copper Glow, bred by Marion Sloan, won the Puppy Stakes. Copper Glow I understand had kept his ears fully down until 15 weeks and Marion had thought he would remain a phalene, however the ears went firmly up over the next month.

A reminder that items for the next Newsletter must be with the Newsletter Editor, Carolyne Allward-Chebsey, by the end of this month at the latest.

At Southern Counties the judge,Jean Banfield, had the pleasure of making up not just one but two champions both of whom have been pushing for that magic third for a little while. In dogs it was a crowning CC for  Carole and Gerry Stone's home bred Genevieve's Flirtie Birtie (Invergarick Conquistador out of Genevieve's Silk Bonnet) and is I believe their first champion in the breed. In bitches a crowning CC for Sue Victor and Emma McLaughlin's Pinelan Amaryllis, bred by Mrs Smith (Pinelan Alpine Treasure out of Longcrags Aurelia of Pinelan) again I believe their first champion in the breed. Amaryllis took BOB. Reserves went to Jenny Scovell's Caswell Take A Chance in dogs (Ch Caswell Copper Connection out of Ch Caswell Coppatina) and Dolly Kavanagh's Ch/ Ir Ch Snowlord Swiss Maid for Serenglade in bitches (Serenglade Solitaire out of Pilipalas Minuet). Notching up another BP win was Irene and Glenn Robb's Gleniren Scarlet Monogram (Ch Ringlands Hologram out of Sunshoo Imascarlet Erika at Gleniren)

Denise Welsh's Harlie the Magnificent continues her winning ways in the agility ring, his latest success coming at the Supa Dog agility week at Paddock Wood where he won the Supa Dog qualifying heat. Unfortunately she then got an upset stomach but still managed quite a few places in big classes, and was later asked to appear on TV on the programme Meridian Today. Another agility star is Dawn Weaver's four year old Phalene dog called Dreamer (Tongring Just William) who came second in the Supa Dog finals beaten only just by a larger much older dog.  How nice to see a phalene doing agility and being so successful.

I was sorry to hear from the USA that Nigel Aubrey-Jones had passed away on Tuesday 3 June. His St Aubrey-Elsdon Pekingese were known throughout the World and both Nigel and his partner Bill Taylor were International All Breed Judges, Bill having judged Papillons at Crufts ten years ago.

Our Dogs
At S Cos Ch Show with Jean Banfield judging BCC and BOB went to Victor & McLaughlin's Pinelan Amaryllis no doubt expertly handled by young Emma, RBCC was Dolly Kavanagh's Ir Ch Snowlodge Swiss Miss for Serenglade. DCC went to the Stone's Genevieves Flirty Bertie and RDCC was Jenny Scovell's Caswell's Take A Chance.  B Puppy was Glenn & Irene Robb's Gleniren Scarlet Monogram.

Eilish Neally sends details of the Papillon Club of Ireland Ch Show  BOB and GSD was Jo Davidson-Poston's Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons, RGSD went to Kilpatrick's Sonsirae Right 'N' Royal.  GRB was the Pearson's Tedlyn Twilight Breeze and RGSB was Irene Water's GB Ch Vella Ennis.  B Puppy was the Beck's Baladora Marked So Chic   Thank you Eilish, Irish news is always welcome!

Jo Davidson-Poston also sent the results of the Irish Toydog S Ch Show.  Jo's Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons won DGS & BOB and was pulled out in the last 4 for BIS and RDGS was Dolly Kavanagh's Denemore Treasure Icon, BGS was Irene Water's GB CH Vella Ennis and RGSB went to Jo's Spinillons A Touch of Hope

Denise Welsh and Harlie the Magnificent went to the Supa Dog Agility week at Paddock Wood where she won the qualifying heat but then suffered an upset stomach she still managed a few places in big classes and then, fully recovered, appeared on Meridan Today TV programme.  Denise also told us to watch out for Dawn Weaver and her 4yr old Phalene from Devon called Dreamer(Tonring Just William)  she thinks he is as good as Harlie and came second in the Supa Dog finals only just beaten by a larger dog

I have just heard that Nigel Aubrey-Jones has just died in Canada.  A famous International Show Judge Nigel was the breeder of the famous St Aubrey-Elsdon Pekingese which he exhibited here and in USA and Canada when he went over the Atlantic to live.  He was a lover of books and Fine Art and was a most knowledgeable person to talk to  It is some years since he awarded CCs over here but was a popular Judge.

Carolyne Allward-Chebsey warns that there is a rather suspect American Gentleman trying to buy a Papillon.  She has details if you need to check him out

Another Warning forwarded on the Internet by Ruth Johnston and is very timely as most people are now getting out into the garden.  Cocoa Mulch sold in Garden Centres  contains a substance called 'Theobromine' which is lethal to dogs and cats.  It attracts them because it smells of Chocolate but if they ingest it they will die. Several deaths have occurred in the last few weeks so beware what you are putting on your garden

I was very pleased to have a telephone call from Len Blayney and have the opportunity to chat to him and to learn that he and the family were coping well. Len asked me to pass on his and the family's thanks to everyone for all the messages and cards they had received and to say that they had been greatly touched by all these. The children particularly had I think not realised just how much Kathy was liked by so many of us and how greatly we will all miss her. They had received so many messages and cards it simply would not be possible for them to respond to them all but they did want everyone to know how touched they were. Needless to say we talked about old times and Len reminded me of the enjoyable shows we used to have in Seymour Hall, in those days of course were were all benched and Mark and I were often benched between Len and Kathy and Edith and Ben Benson. Unlike today's shows much time was spent around the benching except when showing ( and how sad to think that these days leaving dogs unattended at benches could simply not be considered) and many an afternoon was spent simply chatting away. As beginners in those early days it was such an opportunity to listen to more experienced people and learn from them, again something sadly missing these days.

Sue Victor has asked me to pass on her thanks to everyone who sent cards to congratulate her and Emma for making up Ch Pinelan Amaryllis, needless to say they are both still on that proverbial cloud 9.

Two more happy exhibitors, Sandra Austin and Jane Thomson tell me that their home bred young tri boy Jhanakia Olivers Story (Ch Penang Bold Horatio ex Glasafon Fantasy at Jhanakia) has just gained his Junior Warrant at 14 months of age. He has had quite a number of 1st placings in his short career and was recently Best Junior at the Club Championship Show.

In recent notes I referred to the introduction that the judge at UK Toys gave in her report and some of the comments she made about the breed in general. Interestingly yet another all rounder has made similar comments in his report of the breed at SKC. He too mentions fluffy, woolly coats as well as head proportions and makes an interesting observation regarding the length of muzzle pointing out that he felt that there were too many with short, stubby forefaces. This reflects what some have been saying for some while now, why are we getting so many of these teddy bear heads in the ring, and more importantly why are some judges apparently taking the view that these are correct. Are we seeing far more emphasis on flashy looking dogs where as much coat as possible takes preference to the correct breed type and coat quality??? To see two such judges make similar comments within such a short period of time is surely worrying, has the time come when judges should consider penalising far more a dog with the incorrect coat texture and head type than perhaps would normally be done?? Does anyone actually care, I ask because few have bothered to make their views known. It would be interesting to get some views of others particularly those more experienced breeders and exhibitors.

Three Counties was ideal weather for Dog Showing and of course the the setting of the show ground nestling in the hills makes this probably one of the most picturesque venues we have. For Mark and I it was an enjoyable return to the show ring having been absent for some while. We had a lovely sized ring half in and half out, in fact the ring was so spacious that with the pleasantness of the weather the under cover area was not needed but I am sure would have been most welcome if it had not been so pleasant. Peter Jolly found his bitch CC and BOB in Carolyn and David Roe's home bred Sunshoo Imastar Lighter (Ch/Ir Ch Ringlands Treasure Island out of Ir Ch Sunshoo Imastarlett)and this being her third CC gives her her title subject to KC confirmation. Unfortunately neither David or Carolyn were able to be there but Imastar Lighter was ably handled by Irene Robb and I am sure both Carolyn and David were delighted to receive the news of her success. In dogs it was a first CC for Eileen Roberts & Caroline Smith's  Inixia French Resistance JW (Inixia Party Pooper out of Inixia French Lace) and bred by Eileen's son Chris. French Resistance has I believe a Reserve CC to his credit as well as of course having gained his Junior Warrant. Reserve went in dogs to Powdermill Touch of Art Nouveau (Shirando Chocolate Soldier out of Nouveau Gypsy Lass) attending his first championship show owned by Mark and I and bred by Ann and Ruth Weston, better known for their Powdermill Pembroke Corgis. In bitches the Reserve went to Christine Turner's Lady in the Wings For Longcrags (Longcrags Samuel out of Starting Over) bred by  Mrs McLaren. Best Puppy went to the Minor Puppy Dog Nouveau Less is More (Tippitoes Lucky Break at Nouveau out of Nouveau Light Up The Sky), owned and bred by Mark and also attending his first show.
Our Dogs
Peter Jolley was the judge at Three Cos Ch Show and he found his BCC and BOB in Caroline and David Roe's Ch Sunshoo Imastar Lighter, RBCC was Christine Turner's Lady in the Wings For Longcrags,  DCC went to Eileen Dobertsand daughter's Inixia French Resistance JW and RDCC was Mark Billinghurst and Mike Foster's Powdermill Touch Of Art Nouveau. Mike and Mark also won B Puppy with Nouveau Less Is More

At Border Union it was a second CC for Mrs Woodrow's Lynflyer Perfect Lady (Marshlea Executive out of Ablazzor Miss Bluebell) with the Dog CC going to Caroline Lee Farnsworth's Ch Graycaz Green Is Envy ( Ch Graycaz Othello out of Ch Graycaz Blissful Thinking).  Perfect Lady took BOB. Reserves went to Rosemary and David Ayris Ch Ibstock Marksman (Ch Ibstock Mark of Distinction out of Tussalud Miss Terrie Belle) in dogs and Carolyn and David Roe's recently crowned Ch Sunshoo Imastar Lighter in bitches (her breeding I gave last week). Best puppy went to Philip Shirley's Cordonrouge Cameo (Glasafon Welsh Gold at Cordonrouge out of Cordonrouge Classic Minx).

The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club will be holding a Social Get Together and Puppy Socialising Party on Saturday 2 August during which we will all be able to enjoy a demonstration of "Paws to Music". Full details will be announced in the Club Newsletter but it is hoped that as many people as possible will make the effort to attend. There are no championship shows on that weekend and it will be a nice opportunity for folk to get together without the 'pressures' of a show.

Blackpool was a very windy day, indeed the wind did not let up all day and by the end of the day I am sure I was not the only one with a very wind burnt face (and possible pneumonia!!!) Thankfully it stayed dry and reasonably bright and on the odd occasion the wind dropped and the sun came it it was quite pleasant. In dogs it was a first CC for Powdermill Touch of Art Nouveau, owned by Mark and I and bred by Ann and Ruth Weston. This 13.5 month old tri is by Shirando Chocolate Soldier out of Nouveau Gypsy Lass and needless to say Mark and I were over the moon especially as it follows his championship show debut last week where he got the Reserve CC at Three Counties. In bitches it was a quick third CC for Mrs Woodrow's Lynflyer Perfect Lady and thus gives her her title subject to KC confirmation, and this award was warmly greeted by the ring side. Perfect Lady is Mrs Woodrow's first champion in the breed and obviously she was extremely thrilled. BOB went to Touch of Art Nouveau. Reserves went to Rosemary Ayris' lovely and well known Ch Ibstock Marksman in dogs (by Ch Ibstock Mark of Distinction out of Tussalud Miss Terrie Belle) and in bitches to the Minor Puppy Bitch, Frasermar Ice Maiden, bred by Mrs Comrie and owned by Mary Whitehill. Ice Maiden is by Ch Martika What's The Story out of Frasermar Snow Storm and was also Best puppy.

It was pleasant to be able to catch up with some folk we had not seen for quite some while. Mark Whitehill, who was handling the Bitch Reserve CC Winner, had his wedding photos with him and it certainly seems that the wedding was a splendid affair. A lovely venue of a castle in Scotland, all the men, including the groom, donning their Scottish wear and I am sure in the inclement weather at Blackpool Mark was glad he left the kilt at home that day. I must say Mary looked quite stunning in the photos, sporting a tan worthy of the Bahamas and a hat that would have done Ascot proud. And not a tear in sight, although I hear Mary had a quiet one on the day.

Malcolm Fowler judged Border Union Ch Show and I understand that the weather was good.  There is no lovelier better laid out show when the sun is shining and I do regret being unable to be there.  Malcolm found his BCC and BOB in Lynda Woodrow's 'Emmerdale' Pap Lynflyer Perfect Lady (I think this is her second CC - I hope someone will correct me if I am wrong) RBCC went to the Roe's newly crowned Ch Sunshoo Imastar Lighter.  DCC was Carolyne Lee-Farnsworth's Ch Graycaz Green Is Envy and RDCC was David and Rosemary Ayris' Ch Ibstock Marksman.  B Puppy was another one from Philip Shirley, Cordonrouge Cameo.

I'm afraid that I missed two new Ch Titles which were made up by Jean Banfield judging at S Cos Ch Show .  As these were a first Champion for both exhibitors I do apologise.  The first was Ch Pinelan Amaryllis owned by the Victors and young Emma McLaughlin who handles her so expertly and the second was the Stone's Ch Genevieves Flirtie Bertie.  Congratulations to both!

Not being able to attend shows I find that I tend to miss things like this so would be grateful if someone would let me know of important awards like this and also I am sure there must be some important things happening in the Open Shows so please keep me up to date.

Dog World

Jeanette MacKay has been having a good bit of success north of the border. Her Jaylanjay Amastunner JW took BOB and Best Toy at Caithness Canine Society Open Show and went on to take RBIS. At the same show Jeanette's 7 month old Jaylanjay Amanother, a repeat mating to Amastunner, took Best Toy Puppy and went on to take BPIS. An outstandingly successful day for Jeanette and her team.

I was sorry to hear that Club Member Mr John Coat, who lived in Dorset had passed away in May. Joan would have been quite well known to folk in that area, I believe he and his wife used to run some large exemption shows for the benefit of the Benevolent Fund and was also a Life Member of Bournemouth Championship Show Society. Our condolences go to his wife and family.

I was pleased to hear again from Lynda Phillips (Motylek) who still keeps an interest in what is happening in the Papillon World. Lynda has just become a grand mother again, this time a little girl, having already got three grand sons Lynda says having a little girl has made the family complete. It seems strange to think of Linda as a grand mother, shows how the years go by.

Some news from Australia where at the Mid North Coast Canine Club Inc Championship Show on 23 June Lorah's Hot Shot bred of course by Carolyne Allward Chebsey and owned by Rebecca Graham of the Welona Papillons took the Dog CC and BOB at his second outing. At his first show the day before he won his class making it a very successful weekend for him. By Ch Ibstock Marksman out of Lorah's Chances Are this 15 month old boy left the UK at the end of March.

As I expect everyone will know I do try and keep the Club's web site as up to date as possible, and this includes trying to keep the Hall of Champions page up to date. I am however finding it rather difficult to obtain photos of some of the new champions made up this year. Fortunately several of the owners of the missing champions have promised to let me have pictures, some are still waiting for the right picture etc, but just occasionally some never bother to even respond to the request for a picture. I did think of trying to get pictures from the Newsletter Editor as I know she always tries to include details and pictures of new champions in each issue, and I am a little surprised to learn that she too is experiencing similar problems.  I am not sure why some should apparently be reluctant to provide photos but if they are not going to bother to respond to such requests from either the Newsletter Editor or myself, or worse be unnecessarily curt in their response, then they only have themselves to blame if their dogs are left out. It really is unnecessary for anyone to be rude when such an approach is made.

I have now extended the details on the Hall of Champions page and am working on the Champions made up from 1985 to date. Obviously there are a lot of dogs there for whom I do not have photographs so if anyone has a champion made up between those dates and who has not as yet provided pictures of them would they please send me a picture (either by post or by e-mail) If sending by post please please include a stamped addressed envelope, it really is too expensive for me to pay all the postage.

At Blackpool Ch Show Dorothy Simpson made up a new Champion and started one on his way with a first CC.  BOB and DCC was Mark Billinghurst's and Mike Foster's Powdermill Touch Of Art Nouveau at just his second Ch Show and BCC was the magic third for Lynda Woodrow's Lynflyer Perfect Lady(of Emmerdale fame) who has had the Bitch ticket at her last three shows. RDCC was the Ayris' Ch Ibstock Marksman and RBCC went to Mary Whitehill's Frasermar Ice Maiden who was also Best Puppy.  Mark and Mike have not been showing for some time but at their first two shows back in the ring they have collected a CC, a RCC and a B Puppy in Breed!! not bad for a comeback!

At Caithness CS Jeanette MacKay's Jaylanjay Imastunner having gone BOB and B Toy under Betty Flavell went on to take RBIS under Albert Wight and her repeat mating Jaylanjay Imanother just under 7 months old was awarded AV Toy Puppy by Betty Flavell and then went BPIS under Albert Wight  Congratulations!

Carolyne Allward-Chebsey was delighted to hear from Rebecca Grabham in Australia that Lorah's Hot Shot whom she exported to her won his class at his first show and at his second won his class, the CC and BOB.

I had a strange phonecall this week.  A woman's voice asked if I had any papillon puppies and I told her I did not breed any more she then asked me where she could get a 'blue one' and I of course said they did not come in that colour whereupon she asked" what about a grizzle?" I told her I thought that she had the wrong breed and she rang off, I wonder what breed she really meant though!?
