At WELKS Dog CC and BOB went to Caroline Lee Farnsworth's home bred Graycaz In The Red (Ch Graycaz Green Is Envy out of Geangzer Sofine Graycaz) who went on to take Group 4. I believe this is his first CC. Bitch CC went to Sue Stanbury's Inixia Jack's Jewel (Inixia Jack The Lad out of Jadedoren Lets Party to Inixia), her third CC thus giving her her title subject to KC confirmation. Reserves went to Irene and Glenn Robb's home bred Gleniren Scarlet Monogram (Ch Ringlands Hologram out of Sunshoo Imascarlet Erika at Gleniren) in dogs and Carolyn and David Roe's home bred Sunshoo Imastar Lighter (Ch/Ir Ch Ringlands Treasure Island out of Ir Ch Sunshoo Imastarlett)in bitches. Monogram was also Best Puppy.

Queenie Bruce has asked me to mention that the closing date for the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club's competition for their annual calendar is 30 June.  Photo's no larger than  8" x 6"  (panoramic preferably), entry fee 50p per  photo should be sent to Queenie at Mandrew,  Wroot Road, Finningley, Doncaster, DN9 3DR. The calendar is as we all know very popular and in much demand all over the world so get those photos off as soon as you can.

Michaela Walker (Happypappy Papillons) writes regarding the article in the recent Newsletter on wormers saying that she too has had problems in the past and has now found an excellent herbal wormer. Anyone wanting information contact Michaela on 01745 330616 or by e-mail on happypappypapillons@yahoo.co.uk

I had a phone call recently from Brenda Gill to tell me she was off to Italy for six months to work as a courier for a holiday firm in the Lakes and Mountains of Italy., an area which Brenda apparently knows well and loves. Possibly Brenda and her husband will be moving their permanently much depends on how things go for the next six months. I was able to give her one or two addresses of Papillon breeders in Italy so she can 'top up' her papillon quote if she starts to feel homesick.

I was sorry to hear from Shirley Colyer that she had recently lost her old girl Shirando Bracken aged 17 years three months. Bracken was a great favourite with a lot of people, always such a pretty little red and white girl with a charming personality it seems only a few years ago she was a youngster in the ring. By Nouveau Moulin Rouge out of Shirando Domino Queen she was the dam of Shirley's lovely little red and white boy Shirando Jumping Jack. I remember her well in the ring  at the same time as our own Nouveau Envoy (who is out of Moulin Rouge's sister) and who at just a couple of months younger is now showing his age.

Some good news for Shirley was that her Inixia Perfect Host for Shirando has gained his Junior Warrant.

The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club held its Annual General Meeting on Sunday 6 May and it proved to be a short meeting finishing in around 75 minutes. There was quite a good attendance, no doubt helped by the Video and discussion which took part in the morning and which was it would seem very much enjoyed.

Full details will no doubt be published in the Newsletter. Only one position was up for ballot this year being the Newsletter Editor's and Carolyne Allward-Chebsey was re-elected to this. Judges elected for the 2005 Championship Show were Mrs S Colyer (Specialist) and Mr Peter Jolley (All Rounder).

Alan Bartam brought a number of the Limited Edition Prints of the front cover from the Handbook with him and these were very eagerly snapped up. It really is a superb reproduction and reflects the beauty and colour of the original art work so well. I am sure these will become a collectors item before too long, remember the run is limited to only 300 so don't leave it too long before getting your copy otherwise you may well be disappointed. There is I know a lot of interest from overseas, and from non members, for this, so hurry. Contact Alan on 0118 981 5996 or e-mail him at Liz.bartram@tesco.net. Cost is only £20 plus postage.

That weekend was of course also the date of the Papillon Club of America Specialty where BIS went to John Oulton and Linda Sohn's Am Ch Cadaga Civil Action  who of course took BOB at Crufts earlier this year, BOS was Svennson's Ch Caspians Blue Print.  Winners Dog went to the Sohn's L'Ete Cadaga Phenomenon with Winners Bitch and Best of Winners going to Garofalos & Paulino's Involo On a Clear Day., who also took Best Puppy.

I understand THAT at the Banquet after the Specialty, Int Ch Glasafon Connor, bred of course by Jean Leverett and owned by Chie Yamakada (Art Etoile and Queen Bless) in Japan was awarded a Sire of Merit. To earn a Sire of Merit award, a dog has to sire 5 American Champions

Results from over in Ireland, at the South Tipperary Canine Club Championship Show GSD went to Dolly Kavanagh's Denemore Treasure Icon with GSB going to Dolly's Eng &  Ir Ch Snowlord Swiss Maid for Serenglade. At the Fermoy & DCC Championship Show GSD was Mrs. Joan Kilpatrick's Sonsirae

Jo Davidson-Poston's Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons has had more success taking two RBIS in two days, at the Hitchen & District CS Open Show and the Chelmsford & District CS Open Show.

I mentioned last week that Shirley Colyer had lost her Shirando Bracken. Sadly Mark and I have now lost our dear old Nouveau Envoy who had also just turned seventeen years of age. Bracken's dam and Envoy's mother were litter brother and sister and Envoy was the last offspring left from our Ch Nouveau Lord of the Rings. He did not have a good start to life, at six weeks of age he spend best part of a week in the Veterinary Hospital on a drip with parvo. His two litter sisters never made it, it was in the early days of parvo, and after six days we were told to take him home as there was nothing more they could do for him. When we collected him he was so emaciated and weak yet still managed to crawl across the vet's table and weakly wag his tail. It took many weeks building him up and much worry as he had set backs along the way and was not expected to survive. But he did of course and I am not ashamed to say was spoilt rotten, because of this start he never got early socialising and although he loved going out and about the show ring was not his favourite place. Much depended on how he felt on the day, some days he wanted to show others he did not. I remember only too well showing him at the Pap Club Open, in his class he was going so well until he suddenly spotted a black and white check coat on a chair, he would not take his eyes off it and down went the tail. Fortunately the owner of the coat then came in picked it up and went out and as soon as she left the room up came the tail, all was well and he went on the BIS under, if my memory serves me correctly, Rosemary Ayris. Always an easy dog to live with he was in every sense a gentleman and we will miss him greatly.

It was a great shock to hear that Kathy Blayney had passed away suddenly in the early hours of Sunday 25 May. I understand Kathy had the day before been spending some time in the garden with Len and had begun to feel unwell so went indoors. Shortly after Len heard a noise and went in to find Kathy collapsed on the floor, she was taken immediately to hospital but sadly passed away some hours later. I understand she suffered a heart attack and possibly also a stroke.

Kathy Blayney was, as all who knew her will know, a great character. She had been in Papillons for many years and indeed her prefix of Palmosa was one of the best known when I first started in the breed, and I am proud to say my two foundation bitches were both out of a Palmosa bitch. Whilst she had considerable success in the those early years, living on the Isle of Wight was not the easiest place to live when exhibiting dogs, entailing a lengthy and tiresome journey to shows necessitating a ferry across to the mainland before starting out on a journey. Kathy was a keen supporter of local canine societies and indeed was for many years a driving force and secretary of the IOW Canine Society and contributed much to its success, not an easy task given its location. Her Palmosa's were extremely successful, not only in the UK but also overseas and Palmosa papillons strengthened the breed in many countries from Scandinavia and Austria to South Africa. Indeed one Palmosa papillon, Palmosa Barbijon, graced the court of the Late Emperor Haile Salassie in Ethiopia.

Kathy herself was, as I say, a great character. An innate sense of straight forwardness you could always rely on Kathy for an honest opinion. She would not skirt the issue but would tell you honestly what she thought, never harshly, but honestly, a plain speaker who spoke her mind and that is indeed a rarity. As a judge that shining virtue always came through, she judged the dogs as she saw them, it did not matter who was on the other end of the lead, she had her type and stuck to it, friend or foe if you had her type and its was good, you went up, if you did not then it would not be your day. She awarded CC's in Pomeranians as well as Papillons and whilst most of us will know her chiefly for her Papillons, her Pomeranians too had their successes. I am sure there are still a good few of us who can remember her judging at Crufts in 1979 when she gave the Dog CC and BOB to the late Maureen Bower's Dalcia Beau Brummel (and if my memory serves me correctly it was his crowning CC) and will recall how well that was received.

Kathy was great fun to be with, I recall with affection the time Mark and I were on holiday on the IOW, in our early days in the breed, and Kathy and Len came to dinner with us at our Hotel and later that week invited us both to her home for a meal. Some years later Kathy visited us when we lived in Chelmsford as she had I believe a sister living nearby and we had great fun talking not only about dogs but about many other things. Kathy was one of those people who managed somehow to always strip away the layers and see folk for what they were, she may not have suffered fools gladly but she would never hurt deliberately. Although we did not see her that often at the shows it was always a pleasure to meet up with her and it is sad to think that never again will we hear that chuckle.

Len and their son must be devastated by the suddenness of their loss and we hope that the fondness of their memories will see them through this saddest of times. Our thoughts will be with them for the months to come. The funeral will be held on Monday 2 June at 1.30 p.m. at the Isle of Wight Crematorium. It had been Kathy's wish that only family flowers be sent but that donations be made to Southern Cavalier Welfare.

At Bath Dog CC and BOB went to Jenny Scovell's Ch Caswell Copper Connection (Ch Caswell Copper Tiger ex Ch Geanzger Gay Camelia of Caswell) from the Veteran Class. In bitches it was a first CC for Jo Davidson Poston's  Spinillons A Touch of Hope (Ibstock Bright Spark at Spinillons ex Anncolm Love In A Mist) Reserves went to Touch of Hope's sire also owned by Jo, Ibstock Bright Spark at Spinillons (bred by Rosemary Ayris and by Ch Ibstock Mark of Distinction ex Daneview Dainty Blue Bonnet) in dogs and in bitches to Carolyne Allward Chebsey's Lorah's Livin' On The Run (Ch Diquest Fairy Glen ex Alphastar One Vision of Lorah's) Best Puppy was Pearl Peacock's Shamal Fable of Alcala (Shamal Once Upon A Time ex Alcala Juliet< and bred by the late Dianne Merchant Giles.

I have been asked to mention that the judge for WKC is Mrs J Leslie (Kimevan) and not as printed in the schedule (Lesley)

Our Dogs
Rosalie Brady Judged Bath Ch show and her BOB and DCC was Jenny Scovell's Ch Caswell Copper Connection with RDCC going to Jo Davidson-Poston's Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons, the BCC also went to Jo's Spinillons A Touch Of Hope and RBCC was Carolyne Allward-Chebsey's Lorah's livin' On The Run.  B Puppy was Pearl Peacock's  Shamal Fable of Alcala.  opper onnection also won the Veteran Class.

I am so sorry to have to tell you that Kathy Blayney of the Palmosa papillons who lived on the IOW died in the early hours of the 25th.  She had been to Bath where she complained of headaches and then next day in the garden with Len her husband she felt unwell and went inside.  Shortly after Len heard a crash and found Kathy had collapsed She was taken to hospital and passed away there.  Kathy went back a long way in Papillons and was equally well known for her Pomeranians, she gave tickets in both breeds, She made up the Palmosa Champions Prudence, Solitaire and Talyzman and also exported winning stock to Sweden She always tried to get to the southern Ch Shows and will be much missed by her family and friends  The funeral will be held at 1.30 pm at the IOW Crematorium on 2nd June.  She had requested only family  flowers but donations to go to Southern Cavalier Rescue.

Ted Whitehill has asked me to point out that the Papillon Judge for The Welsh KC Ch is Mrs J Leslie (Kimevan) and not Leslet as in the Schedule

Carolyne Allward-Chebsey asks that articles for the next Newsletter should be with her by 30th June so get writing!! She says that there must be something you want to tell others or something that has happened to you and your Paps.  I know how you feel Carolyne - I sometimes think that there is no one out there!!
