Frequently Asked Questions

By Sue Jones

What is Homoeopathy?

A.   Briefly, it is a system of treatment where a minute dose of a particular remedy is given to a sufferer when it has been observed that their symptoms resemble those which a large dose gives rise to in a healthy person.  e. g. Slicing onions often causes red watering burning eyes and sneezing so a small dose of onion i.e Alium Cepa can bring relief when one has this sort of cold.

Can the remedies be given safely at the same time as conventional medicine?

A.  Ideally the remedies should be given on their own but this is not always a preferred option.  The remedy should be given together with the drugs and hopefully as the patient improves the drugs can be withdrawn.

Is Homoeopathy like Herbalism?

A.   No. Although vegetable substances are used in minute and potentised form to create some remedies many other substances are used as well e.g. minerals, poisons, infected tissue, chemicals, and other substances which have undergone proving.

What is the best way to give the remedies?

A.  First of all handle the tablets as little as possible to avoid contamination. I tip them into the lid and then into a clean spoon, using another clean teaspoon I crush them and then drop the powder to the back of the dog's throat.  It is best that it is absorbed through the tissues of the mouth and as they are small and tasteless most animals accept them easily.
