Phil Shirley has asked me to mention the following "The South Of England Papillon Club has chosen the British Heart Foundation as the charity to benefit from this years "Papillons Walk for Charity". The walk will take place at Bradfield on Saturday morning the 9th April (please note the wrong day "Sunday" was printed on the lunch booking slip). Dogs will be sponsored to walk circuits of the grounds and it is hoped to raise a substantial amount for this very worthwhile cause. Last year over £2,500.00 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Care.  Everyone is welcome to take part, there will be lunch available at 1.00pm , the clubs AGM will take place at 3.00pm . Anyone unable to attend, who may like to contribute may pledge money via Anne Borg on 01865 762201. Please also contact Anne for sponsorship forms and lunch reservations."

I do hope papillon folk will give this their support, it is a very worthy charity and of course the South of England Papillon Club have been extremely successful in raising substantial amounts of money for various charities through their projects. Such activities go a great way towards combating some of the anti dog press we see from time to time and benefits us all. Let's hope the weather is kind and the Club manages to surpass even their high standards.

Temelora Storm Petrel, owned and bred by Sue Morrell and Thesbina Teague, has made a super start to his show career. He attended his first show a couple of weeks ago, the Swindon & District CS, at the age 6 month and 2 days old taking BP and PG1 and the following day at the Bristol & District Dog Club took another BP this time with PG3. Two weeks later at the Okehampton and District CS he took BPIS, he is by Serenglade Sakime out of Burghbridge Temair for Temelora. Not only a super start to the year for him but also his owner breeders who of course took the Bitch CC at Crufts with Ch Serenglade Enchanted Lady for Temelora.

Mark and I were pleased to hear from Isabel Fernandez in Brazil that Brz Junior Champion Nouveau Borboleta had now gained her full Brazilian title. It seems that the breed is becoming more popular there now as there are several breeders who have imported stock from Europe so they have quite a good collection of interested breeders there now.

Our Dogs

So Crufts is over for another year and Ch Antony owned by a very happy Miss Rutten from Holland was Judge Caroline Roe's choice for DCC and BOB,  He looked magnificent on the TV and was placed as Group 2  What a great win for them. RDCC was Queen Bless JP Top Gun Owned By the Banfields and Chie Ejima.  BCC was Sue Morrells and Thesbina Teague's Ch Serenglade Enchanted Lady for Temelora who has had a most successful year, RBCC went to the Flanagan's Burghbridge Our Princess and Best Puppy was Sue Stanbury's Inixia Crown Jewel.

I can't believe I am saying this but after years of getting it wrong the BBC eventually have got the Crufts coverage right!!!  Presenter Clare Balding had just the right amount of accurate information to impart and our own Frank Kane was wonderful.  All BOBs were seen, even if only momentarily, and their names were given.  Emphasis was on the Dog Show and not the Commercial aspects of Crufts All those pulled out in the Group Final line ups were seen moving and the Obedience,  Agility and Flyball was given just enough time, There were no fluttery presenters and all in all it was a brave effort.  I missed being there but having watched it on TV did not feel annoyed and unsatisfied as in other years.  Well Done BBC but it would be nice to have an even longer programme!

I have a note from Mike Foster to the effect that in view of the Committee's attitude he can no longer support them and has withdrawn his services as Webmaster for the Club Website   Any queries should be sent to Secretary Carolyne Allward-Chebsey

Rosemary Hobson 's Roseanjon Gucci By Design has added another award to her list by going B Puppy and Puppy Group 4 at Barrow Show It was quite a family affair as his Mother, Father and sister were all in the placings!!

A correction to the information regarding the Crufts winners, the Reserve CC Dog Jap, It and Fin Ch Queen Bless JP Top Gun was in fact sired by Blackpark Outright and not as previously stated.

I recently gave some details of Sue Morrell and Thesbina Teague's new puppy Temelora Storm Petrel who amongst her results took BPIS at Okehampton and Dist. CS. In her excitement Sue omitted to tell me that at the same show  Snowlord High Society for Temelora, also owned by Sue and Thesbina, took BOB and G2.

UK Toydogs certainly proved to be an exceptionally successful show for Irene and Glenn Robb, one of those days when you cannot put a foot (or should I say a paw) wrong. The breed had two judges, Mark Whitehill judging the dogs and Bryan Mitchell judging the bitches, a welcome return to the centre of the ring for Bryan who has been away from the UK for far too long. I am sure many of the exhibitors at the show would not before have exhibited under Bryan , I think the last time he judged the breed over here was in the 80's. Dog CC and BOB went to Irene and Glenn's Ch Gleniren Scarlet Monogram, who also went BIS 4, he is by Ch Ringlands Hologram out of Sunshoo Imascarlet Erika at Gleniren. Bitch CC came from the Minor Puppy Bitch Class being Irene and Glenn's Gleniren Starlight Kisses about whom I have recently written. She also took BPIB and went on to win BPIS. She is by Daneview Rhythm and Blues out of  Gleniren Scarlet Kissagram who herself is litter sister to Monogram. To add to Irene and Glenn's day BPD went to Ann and Alan Richardson's Sunshoo Imawhite Diamond bred by Carolyn and David Roe and sired by Monogram.  Reserve CC's  went to Sue Stanbury's Inixia Wily Willum in dogs (Ch. Inixia Wily Walter out of Inixia Phoebe and bred by Mr J Sampson) and to Sue Morrell and Thesbina Teague's phalene Serenglade Satanya For Temelora (Serenglade Solitaire out of Ringlands Safe Keeping at Serenglade and bred by Linda Greenslade) in bitches.

News from Ireland where at the Combined Canine Club BOB & Dog CACIB & GSD went to Dolly Kavanagh's Ch Dan Swed Ch Serenglade Gold Sovereign, Bitch CACIB & GSB & Best Veteran went to Marion Sloan's- Ch & Ir Ch Sunshoo I'm A Movie Premiere (this was her 3rd CACIB towards her International title.), Res Dog CACIB & RGSD to Mrs Stone and Sue Stanbury's Inixia Perfect Poser and Res Bitch CACIB & RGSB to Diane Mooney's Ir Ch Omoanaig Flame of Tara. Best Puppy was Mrs Switzer's Dolcissimo After Eight at Issoria

Our Dogs

UK Toydog Ch Show was a triumph for Glenn and Irene Robb.Judges were Mark Whitehill for Dogs and Bryan Mitchell making a welcome return to Britain and doing Bitches. The Robbs won DCC and BOB with CH Gleniren Scarlet Monogram and the BCC and Best Puppy I B with Gleniren Starlight Kisses  They then followed this up by going 4th place in the BIS line up with Monogram and taking BPIS with Starlight Kisses under Andrew Brace. Starlight Kisses was at her first Ch Show and is only 8 months of age!  What a day for them I doubt if they have come down to earth yet!!  Incidentaly they also won JB with G Scarlet Signature!!

RDCC went to Sue Stanbury's Inixia Wily Willum and RBCC was Sue and Thesbina's Serenglade Satanya for Temelora.  Our YKC Junior Handlers also had a good day out The AV Special Open Toydog 6 to11 being won by 10 yr old Ashlie Pike and the 12 to 16 was won by 12 yr old Francesca Mc Wade and their respective Papillons.

Eilish has sent the results of the Combined CC International Show where CACIBs are on offer as well as GSs.BOB &DGS & Dog CACIB was Dolly Kavanagh's IRCH Dan &Swed Ch Serenglade Gold Sovereign. ResDog CACIB &RGSD was Stone& Stanbury's Inixia Perfect Poser Bitch CACIB &GSB & Best Veteran went to Sloan's GB & IR CH Sunshoo Im A Movie Premiere  Res B CACIB & RGSB was Mooney's Omaonaig Flame Of Tara B Puppy went to Switzer's Dolcissimo After Eight At Issoria.  Maxine Moth who is of course a Phalene  won her 3rd CACIB at this show and only needs one more to claim her FCI Crown she is now 8yrs young and was the first UK Phalene ever to become a Champion.

Since I wrote about the planned Book Complete Illustrated Standards of the Papillon and Phalene by Mike Foster and Deidre Ashdown. I have been asked to find out the cost of Postage and packing so that buyers can take advantage of the PrePublication price of £15 For one book the P&P will be £3.45 making a total of £18.45 and should be sent to Deirdre Ashdown at 43 Dunmore Point, Gascoigne Place , London E2 7LX Tel/Fax 020 7739 7429.  After Publication probably in June the cost will be £25  so big savings can be made by ordering and paying now!!!

Jo Davidson Poston had a super day at the Tunbridge Wells and District Canine Society taking BOB with Ir Ch Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons Sh CM  and going on to take BIS, this was his 7th BIS to date. Jo also took BP with  Ibstock Sparks Will Fly For Spinillons, a daughter of Bright Spark,  who went on to PG4.

At the South Wales Papillon Club Limited Show BIS went to Ann Borg's Genendale Glint of Gold at Elendil

The KC Gazette is I understand to feature Papillons in its June 2005 Showcase, the last time it featured the breed apparently was in 1991. The last time I placed an advert in one of the KC publications was some years ago for the Crufts souvenir when the company who dealt with the publishing managed to print my advert in black and white despite having ordered and paid for colour. Whilst I was of course reimbursed it was disappointing, so hopefully no problems will happen this time.

Members of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club should now have received their papers for the AGM. The Secretary has asked me to include the following "Your AGM papers and Ballot Papers for the 2007 Championship show Judges and the Committee for 2005 are in the post to you. The Ballot papers have to be back to the scrutineer, Mr Nowell, by 2nd May. Please you your vote. You should also note that the date of the AGM has changed to the 29th May and not as stated in the Preliminary Notice that appeared in the Christmas Issue of the newsletter. If you do not receive your papers by this time next week, I kindly ask you to contact the Treasurer, Doug Colyer   (01394 450782) (leave a message on the answer phone if he is not there), to see if your membership dues are up to-date. If they are, Doug will then let me know and I will get another set of the papers off to you immediately. Or you can pick them up at the Championship show if you have entered. Either way, please contact Doug first."

I see we have some 12 names standing for election to committee, including just four members seeking re-election. Do remember whilst you can vote for up to eight Members you don't have to vote for eight, you can vote for as few or as many (up to eight) as you want. Do give some thought and use your votes wisely.

There are two items down on the Agenda for members to consider, again I would suggest Members think about these carefully and make sure they understand the implications if these proposals are passed. The Code of Ethics has raised some interest, for example one of the items included in the Code (which is the Code the KC have adopted) states that when selling a dog, owners will ensure all Kennel Club Documents (which I can only think means registration papers) are provided to the new owner. I know many do not register all our pet puppies, especially mis marks, it seems that under this code you will have to register all your puppies and pass on the papers. It would also seem that if you let an older dog go if you charge for it you will again be obliged to hand over registration papers. I know many of us are reluctant to hand over papers if selling a pet, I appreciate these can be endorsed Progeny Not for Registration and Not For Export but I don't think you can these days endorse them to prevent them being shown, and holding back the papers to many of us seems a sensible option. As I won't be breeding any more puppies it won't affect me, were I to do so however I don't think I would accept being told by anyone else whether or not I should hand over papers. I can understand why the KC want this to happen, registering all stock including pets and mis marks and transferring ownership will boost their income, I am not sure it is best for breeders who have genuine concerns about ensuring their stock is properly protected.

One thing I am not sure of is what will happen if a member does not adhere to these various items, there seems little point in having a Code if adherence is not to be 'enforced' but some of us may feel some of the matters are for individuals own views rather than as a rule of the Club. For example one of the items refers to ensuring dogs wear properly tagged collars when away from home, what would happen if someone saw me walking one of my dogs around the town with an untagged collar??  How would the committee deal with such a complaint?? I do think perhaps a little more thought needs to be given on a Code of Ethics, I would prefer it to deal with such matters as age of selling puppies, and perhaps stud dog owners responsibilities.

Helen wheeler has sent the results of the S Wales Ltd Show which took the place of the Open Show for this year and she thanks all those who attended and made it such a good day  BIS and BB was Glendale Glint Of Gold at Elendil, RBIS and BD was Inixia Dreams Magic, B Puppy went to Inixia Rags To Riches, Best Phalene Serenglade Scarlet Ribbon and Best Veteran Inixia Party Pooper.

Jo Davidson-Poston's Zebedee( Ir Ch Ibstock Bright Spark For Spinillons Sch M) took his 7th BIS at Tunbridge Wells  Breed Judge was Sue Morrell , Group Mrs Roberts and BIS Lesley Crawley. Zeb's daughter Fly took PG4.

Carolyne Allward - Chebsey has sent the following to Members of the Papillon Club: "Your AGM papers and Ballot Papers for the 2007 Championship show Judges and the Committee for 2005 are in the post to you. The Ballot papers have to be back to the scrutineer, Mr Nowell, by 2nd May. 22 April 2005
Dog World Two papillon folk have been under the weather recently. Patricia Grieff of the Pillipalas Papillons has been admitted to hospital with breathing problems and is currently at Monnow Ward 4/1, Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny, Gwent NP7 7EG. Hopefully by the time these notes are printed Patricia will be back home and I am sure would welcome hearing from her friends, it may be wise to check if she is still in hospital before sending cards etc or to send them to her home.  Thesbina Teague (Temelora Papillons) is also currently out of action. Last October when she was in Australia she damaged her ankle and has only now found out that she had in fact managed to break it. She is now in a cast for the next 6 weeks. This is the 4th time in 5 years Thesbina has managed to break a leg, always around Christmas time - no more skiing Thesbina!!! Again I am sure she would appreciate hearing from folk. Following my notes last week there has been much discussion on the Papnet list about the proposed Code of Ethics that has been placed by the Committee on the AGM Agenda. The last heard on this matter was a posting by the Acting Chairman saying "We have been inundated with the views of many of our Members through the e-mail.   The Committee now have in their possession the many varied and diverse views of a cross section of Papillon Club Members which I can assure will be taken on board in future discussions on the subject of a Code of Ethics." Of course the proposal itself still stands on the Agenda and the suggestion has been made that the Committee consider withdrawing this at the AGM (subject to Members approval) with a view to putting another proposal forward at the next AGM which is more suited to Members views. Hopefully that is the course of action that will be followed and that the views of all the Members will be sought through the Newsletter as to whether they want a Code of Ethics and if so what they feel it should include. I do feel that when considering a matter as important as this all members should have the opportunity to contribute not just those of us who are able to participate on Papnet or even attend AGM's. I see that this year the North Of Scotland Toydog Society are giving the breed 8 classes which will be judged by Bert Easdon, of the famous Yakee Pekingese. Schedules for the show, which will be held on 29 May at the Community Centre, Marketgate, Arbroath are now available from the Secretary Miss AK Ogilvie tel: 01698 791467. I am sure it will prove to be an enjoyable day for Bert as the breed does seem to have a good strength North of the Border. The Club will hold its AGM after the Show
Our Dogs

Astrid Ogilvie Secretary of N of Scotland Toydog Society has sent me the information that at their Open Show on 29th May to be held in Arbroath at the Community Centre they are scheduling eight Papillon Classes to be judged by Mr A Easdon( Yakee) telephone Astrid on 01698 791467 for a schedule.

We have two invalids, Thesbina Teague when in Australia in October injured her ankle and it has only noe been discovered to be broken!!  She has been in Hospital and is now in acast for at least 6 weeks, This is the fourth broken leg she has had in 5 years all around Christmas and she says that in future she will have her Christmas in August!!  She is now home and is being looked after by her 'doggy' partner Sue Morrell She must have been in a lot of pain over all those months.

Patricia Grieff of the Pilipalas has been admitted to Monnow Ward 4/1, Nevil Hall Hospital Abergavenny Gwent NP7 7EG suffering from breathing problems and it is not known how long she will be in.  Hopefully she will soon be home Cards and letters would be welcome to keep her spirits up.

I am pleased to report that Patricia Grieff is now out of hospital and back at home. This will certainly make things easier for Peter who was having to make a 90 miles round trip each day to visit Patricia. I am sure we all wish her a speedy recovery.

I have just had a telephone call from Jane Lilley to let me know that Peter Rolt will tomorrow (22 April) celebrate his 100th Birthday. Older Members of the Club will remember Peter who was the late Clarice Waud's companion. Peter still lives in Downcourt Cottage and Jane tells me that when she last saw him a few months ago he was as bright as a button, he has a carer go in and help him, and that up until not that long ago had a papillon with him. I have passed this on to the Bubbles in her capacity as Acting Chairman and understand Bubbles will arrange for the Club to send him a greeting. I am sure however some of the older members who knew Peter might want to drop him a line, his address in full is Downcourt Cottage, 10 Courts Hill Road , Hazlemere , GU27 2NG

Those folk interested in Phalenes may be interested to learn that a Book has been produced in the USA called the Millennium Phalene Pictorial and has been written by several phalene fanciers from the USA.Some 134 Phalenes are included and there will also be articles from breeders around the world. .Orders are now being taken, the cost is currently $30 per book plus postage to the UK of $10 although I believe the cost will go up with effect from 1 May to $40 per book plus postage. Arrangements can be made for orders of more than one book if required. I believe there is only a limited number of books available, and with the Specialty coming up soon this may affect numbers available so anyone interested should make contact as soon  as possible. Contact Lisa Perle on carpe027@umn.edu  (if you don't have access to the internet contact me and I will give you an address or telephone number) Credit Cards cannot be accepted payment accompanying order should be in dollars by way of an International Money Order, although I daresay a number of folk will have friends in the USA who nay be able to help out. I am sure it will be of great interest to anyone who loves the variety and I believe the first book to concentrate solely on the phalene.

The South Of England Papillon Club recently held its Sponsored Walk and I understand that yet again this was a great success. The few years it has been going this Club has raised an unbelievable amount for Charity, and this helps so much to show to the public the positive side to dogs. I am sure we would all wish to send our congratulations to the Club. The Walk was followed by the Club's AGM and the Club Secretary, Phil Shirley, has kindly sent me the following report. "More than  50 members accompanied by their many dogs attended the recent Charity walk in aid of the British Heart Foundation organised by the South of England Papillon Club. Luckily the weather stayed fine for the walk, the final amount raised is in the region of £900 although pledged donations are still arriving, if you would like to contribute to this very worthwhile cause please send your donations to either Anne Borg or Phil Shirley, a member of the Charity will be present at the Open show to collect the Cheque. There was a super lunch served following the walk, members then took part in the Grand National Sweepstake, there was a bumper raffle and an auction of a beautiful cushion made by Margaret Unwin, both of which raised good amounts for the club.As televisions were taken to the venue we were able to watch the Grand National and also keep track of the Royal Wedding at the same time. The AGM then took place and with no agenda items for discussion the Officers and Committee were elected for the coming year, they are : Officers: Chairman: Mrs P Peacock, Vice Chairman:Mr I Chandler, Hon. Secretary: Mr P Shirley, Hon. Assistant Secretary: Mrs A Borg , Hon. Treasurer: Mr I Dack Committee: Mrs J Casey, Mrs J Chandler, Lt.Cdr. B.Cox RN., Mrs R Dack, Miss D Deuchar, Mrs S Langdon, Mrs P Munn, Mr A Pearch, Mrs S Stanbury, Ms M Unwin, Mrs C Wilson, Mrs D Welsh. The event ended with the usual Devon Cream Tea to send people on their way. This clubs next event will be their Open Show on the 21st May at Chieveley, where there is substantial prize money on offer, along with other prizes, entries close 25th April."

As many of you will know Deirdre and I had intended to put on a display of the art work from the Complete Illustrated Standards of the Papillon and Phalene at the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Championship Show. The purpose of this was two fold, firstly many people had expressed a wish to see the original art work and it would have surely been interesting and entertaining for exhibitors, and secondly it would have enabled folk, particularly those without access to the Internet, to exchange views with us on various aspects of the Book. Having been advised on 27 March that the Committee would allow us to put on such a display, Deirdre has spent many hours putting together a selection of 200 pieces of art work, printing labels and brief explanations, and laying the whole thing out in portfolios, as well as providing printed information for people. It was somewhat of a shock therefore to have received a letter five days before the show from the Committee telling us that they had for some reason or other changed their minds and would not now allow us to hold this display. I am sorry therefore that those folk who had expressed an eagerness to see some of the art work etc will be disappointed. I am also sorry that the Committee should act in such a dishonourable way as to go back on their agreement, an agreement reached I understand after all had been consulted.

I am aware that the Committee made a decision some while ago that for this year no stalls other than Club Stalls will be allowed to be present at any of the Club Shows, apparently it is felt that the absence of these will enable to Club to review how the shows are run. Quite why it needs the stalls absent for this I don't know, we are only talking about a few stalls,  hardly Crufts. I believe it is more a case that there is a belief (misguided in my view) that the attendance of other stalls affects the profitability of the Club Stall. Personally I doubt the wisdom of this and it remains to be seen whether the Club Stall makes sufficient extra profit to offset the loss of the fees usually paid by the other stalls. It will I think be disappointing for exhibitors at the show not to have the stalls to visit. Nonetheless that was their decision, albeit it would seem not in the best interests of exhibitors etc. In light of that decision we had intended to place an advert in the show catalogue explaining why we would not be there and giving details of a proposed future display at another Club's event. It would seem that it was because of this that the committee then 'agreed' to allow us to hold a display. Were I of a suspicious mind I might think that having therefore had us change the wording of our advert and removing the explanation etc., the advert will actually say 'Come and See Our Display At The Show', the Committee felt they could then renege on that agreement without having to worry about an explanation appearing in the show catalogue. Whatever their reasons or thinking I don't believe it reflects well upon the Committee to go back on their word at such short notice. For those folk who had hoped to see the art work and were disappointed I can only apologise, it was clearly beyond our control
Our Dogs

I am happy to tell you that Patricia Greiff is now home The hospital has arranged for a specialist nurse to visit and to keep in touch as the treatment has badly affected her Diabetes control. However this saves Peter a 90 mile round trip every day.  Cet well soon Patricia.
