26 March 2010 - Dog World

On a bright dry morning everyone made their way to the NEC for DFS Crufts 2010 Toy day.

Luckily this year we were in the far left corner ring away from the humdrum noise. All was quiet until the bitch classes and then by limit bitch we were in full flow of mounting decibels of ‘We are the Champions’. Glenn’s face told the picture as if to say oh lordy not again as he sings this every night of the week. But the girls and handlers kept their acts together and soldiered on in step with the music.

Mrs Rosemary Ayris took to centre stage and commenced the judging of our lovely breed at 8.30am on the dot. Her day was full to the brim with a large entry so time was to be the essence of the day if to be completed in time for the group.

This was completed admirably so no worries on that score. The ringside seating was at a premium and many overseas visitors had come to have a good day out watching the breed they love.

Crufts is always a chance to meet and greet friends; situated in a corner ring everyone had plenty of room and privacy to do just that.

What a lovely surprise to Jean Leverett of the Glasafon affix at Crufts. Looking well and thoroughly enjoying being with the Papillons and enjoying talking to friends. I hope we see you at another show in the year Jean.
Both the Pap Club and South Wales Pap Club had stands with Papillon related items to view and purchase. Both were well stocked which made everyone open their purses to let the moths out!

The Pap Club had a book of condolence for Carolyne Allward – Chebsey and many exhibitors took time to express their thoughts.

I am sure like myself many missed not seeing Len Stanbury this year dressed in full Welsh regalia. Unfortunately he was doggy sitting for Sue so we will just have to wait until next year.

The dogs always love Cruft’s ring. They seem to sense the occasion with the green carpeted ring and really seem to enjoy the space they are given.

By the end of the day the decisions were made and our judges principal winners were as follows: S.M.J.K.A & M Alfadl, Love, McKay & Berg’s DCC/BOB Am/Can CH Arkeno’s Ears to You (ATC Al00232CAN). A Phalene victory here so the Phalene enthusiasts were jumping up and down with joy. Cob was handled by John Alton. BCC/BOS Mrs I & Mr G Robb and Mrs C Roe’s Getupandgo de Costalina Suniren . A nice debut both for this little girl and the Suniren additional affix for the Gleniren / Sunshoo Showteam. Glenn handling Babybelle managed to keep the ear muffs on for the chant clapping and We will rock you rendition. On the dog not him. Mrs E Abeloos-Devos & Mr J Roosens took the RDCC with Am/Can/Fin CH Siljans Tri Connection [ATC AK01271SWE], Jan Roosens also bred the BCC winner so congratulations to the Costalina kennel. RBCC went to Mrs AG Lyngstad’s Int/Multi CH Freetains My Oh My [ATC AJ01368NOR], BP went to Mrs K Stewart & Miss K Stewart- Knight’s Denemore Story’s Echo at Tussalud with Kirsten handling.

So after all the photographs completed we all packed our bags in the trolleys, put on a new pair of feet and set off home. David arrived back at the trolley with the treat of the day an inviting ice cream for us all. See men can have their sweet and nice moments, we girls just have to be patient, only kidding David. Another Crufts over and soon everyone will be back on the hamster wheel for the forthcoming summer shows.

Exciting news from the previous days at Crufts in the agility ring. Debbie Goodwin brought news that Sonny, Temelora Accidental Magic had whizzed around perfectly and stormed home to win the Novice Agility Small Cup. Debbie says he wasn’t fazed by the crowds, light or carpet and focussed coping with everything. My, what a clever chap and Debbie is brimming with pride as are his breeders Sue and Thes.

At N&ECPC Open show Mr Bryan Claydon (Brymarden) came along to judge our breed. Mr Claydon’s affix is best known for Cavs and Norfolk Terriers. Thorpe Willoughby is a pleasant hall and just the right size to give the right atmosphere. A good entry of 122 so we were in for a good days judging. The raffle excelled with 50+ prizes and everyone gave forth their money to me with the prospect of picking up a prize. You really are a well trained lot.

Before judging commenced a special moment was given for Carolyne Allward Chebsey.

The juniors brought to centre ring vases with roses, these were for each exhibitor to take and wear in celebration and memory of Carolyne’s life.

What a touching gesture by the club and I am sure Carolyne would have been so proud. Queenie Bruce the clubs Vice Chairman gave a speech straight from the heart and her words touched so many of us in the room.

During the lunch time The Papillon Junior Handler of the Year Awards held their ceremony with Mrs Karen Maskell at the helm. Miss Kirsty Miller was awarding the prizes. The junior winners had lots of gifts and trophies to take home and all seemed to enjoy their awards day. The annual winners were as follows: 6-11 years winner Josh Howarth, runner-up Carragh McGrath, 3rd Zoe Bradford.

12-16 years: winner Talitha Massey, runner-up Samantha Crawford, 3rd Keavy McGrath.

The title of Most Improved Junior Handler for 2009 went to Olivia Jonston-Love.

In the Junior Handling classes Rebecca Thompson took best handler of the day. This was judged by Miss Kirsty Miller.

Next on the agenda was a surprise moment for Ann and Alan Richardson. Both were retiring from the club after serving twenty five years a piece. A presentation was given to thank them for all the valued years they had both given to the club. They will be missed very much by everyone.

It was so nice to see Jimmy Simpson the clubs Chairman at the show and we all wish him the best for continued health.

The judging went smoothly and Mr Claydon was always kind and considerate with both dogs and exhibitors. His principal winners were as follows. BIS Irene and Glenn Robb’s Gleniren Sunset in Seattle Sunshoo and BPIS first time out for this little lady Gleniren Sunset Kisses.

Congratulations to all the other winners of the day especially to Kirsty Milller, Queenie Bruce and Liz and Alan Bartram for their achievements.

We all know that circumstances of late have made difficult times for the PBDC. It is not easy for anyone on the committee to have coped with the sad news and loss of their secretary Carolyne Allward-Chebsey. As individuals we have all learnt that usually a crisis brings unity and togetherness. People want one aim and that is to carry on and go forward to the future. This the parent club are committed to do.

The PBDC have co-opted Mr Kevin Arrowsmith as acting secretary and the general running of the club is firmly and safely in his and his committee’s hands.

Rumours run rife in the Dog World and get exaggerated beyond believe. Kevin would like to make it very clear to its members that the club is strong in every aspect and will continue at all costs to have their member’s interests in mind. The club will continue to go forward as the parent club and all shows and seminars scheduled for 2010 and beyond will continue in a professional and successful manner. The members of the club being their first priority.

The club with permission from the KC are making an extension to the closing date of the April Championship Show entries due to the recent unfortunate circumstances.

Entries should be received by Mrs Pauline Coughlan, 9 Finchall Croft, The Oaks, Hampton Coppice, Solihull, West Midlands B92 9QP, tel 0121 705 5824.

An alternative option is to hand your entry to either Pauline or Kevin at UK Toy Dog Show on Saturday 27th March. Entries received after this date will not be accepted as there is a deadline with the printers to be met.

Keep in mind the AGM is on the 2nd May the officers and committee welcome you to attend if possible. Remember also that the Phalene workshop is taking place after the AGM with Linda Greenslade as speaker. I will be giving a full report on the workshop in a later DW BN.

The puppy register will be looked after by Mrs. Michelle Fisher and her details are as follows: 147 Ferry Road, Hullbridge, Essex, SS5 6ET. You may telephone 01702 231368 or email ellmara@tiscali.co.uk.

The first draw for the PBDC’s ‘100 Club’ takes place at the Champ show in April. If you want to be in with a chance to take home the money prize then you have to get your number from Michelle Fisher. As David Dickenson says you have to be in it to win it. So get your skates on before all the numbers are allocated. Just £12 a number will give you a chance for all of the year. Looks like a sound deal to me a £1 a go with opportunities for your number to come up somewhere during 2010.

Dorothy Simpson paid a visit on behalf of N&ECPC with flowers to Jean Grant. Unfortunately Jean is unable to speak but understands everything that is said to her. Jeans love of Papillons and her dogs is still very apparent and I am sure if you have the time she would love to hear from folk. I am sure a card or a visit would brighten her day. Cards can be sent to Westfield Care Home, Hook Road, Goole, N Yorks.

Sad news from Jean and Roger Banfield that their beautiful Molly had passed away. Ch Kingshaven Miss Molly was a personal favourite of mine and both Glenn I hold some very treasured memories of this little lady.

Helen Verity’s mum had a fall recently and we all hope she recovers soon. Not an easy time for Helen as sad news that Sunshoo Jeremy Fisher known as Jamie had passed away.

Eileen Roberts is moving in the near future of which details I will give you at a later date therefore she has had to regretfully retract from her judging appointment in 2011 at the South Wales Papillon Club Open show. Judges names that are put forward will be asked if they are available to judge at the shows to be voted in the usual way at their AGM.

Debbie Burns had some good news that Petitchien's Alfie Moon at Beautyfly VDH Junior Champion had gained his V1+CAC and CACIB at the Munich International Dog Show yesterday.

Other excited exhibitors were Marcy and Ric Wyrens of Marric Kennel. They brought news to Linda Greenslade (PW’s breeder) that Serenglade Rainbow Warrior is now an American Champion.

Well I have enjoyed sharing the coffee with you so don’t let the day disappear get out there any enjoy your butterfly family.

Sent me your news or items of interest.

Irene Robb
